General :: Editing Grub.conf To Make Windows Default In Dual Boot?

Mar 31, 2010

I installed Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux Enterprise 5 on my PC for my purpose. The PC is used by other family members too and they need only Windows OS for browsing. It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. The following is the content of my grub.conf file (FYI):

#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,5)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

Fedora :: Nano - Editing Lines That Go Past The Window Edge?

Nov 22, 2009

I noticed a problem when editing files with nano. This problem happens if the terminal window that I run nano from is not wide enough to show the full line.By way of example below is part of my grub.conf

Code:

title Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64)
root (hd0,13)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 ro root=UUID=47e4c448-8087-4ec6-a67b-814845a598db noiswmd LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us vga=0x370 nouveau.modeset=0
initrd /boot/initramfs-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64.img

If we assume the code box above is the size of the terminal window, if I edit anything past what will show as the $ sign in nano, it will automatically add a carriage return. So if we take the kernel line above, if say the screen shows at the end root=UUID=$, if say I were then to add 00 the end of the UUID, it will move everything starting from root=UUID= to a new line. Is there some wrap feature that is enable in Fedora for nano?

Ubuntu :: Grub2 Editing - Editing Directly To /boot/grub/grub.cfg?

Jun 6, 2010

I have an old laptop that I installed EasyPeasy Lucid on. I have never used Grub2 as my other Ubuntu installs still use Grub Legacy. I have studied all the tutorials which instruct that the grub.cfg file should not be edited directly.This old laptop has one of the dreaded Intel graphics chips for which the kernel automatically loads the i915 module. Of course (like a multitude of others with Intel graphics and Lucid) I booted into a black screen but knew the workaround was to enable mode setting through grubI used the

Also, my xorg.conf file is not configured for this monitor. My question is what should my xorg.conf look like? I have a bit of a start on it(see attached) but it is not quite right. How do I set up the Toshiba as the default screen, in order to use this monitor when Linux starts? Other info: I use Debian 5.0 with Gnome.

Ubuntu :: Corrupt Mouse Pointer After Editing Xorg.conf?

Jun 13, 2011

I have managed to resolve that and can now get resolutions > 800x600. However since then the mouse pointer is intermittently corrupt. I've attached an image showing the corrupt pointer which is about the size of a thumbnail.The driver I have installed is xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.4.0~melchiorre-5_i386.deb .I've also attached a copy of my xorg.conf file.While I've been writing this post I've noticed that if I take a screenshot or if I connect to the PC using VNC the entire screen is corrupt.

General :: Moving Install To New Hard Drive (Fc12) Mount - Grub.conf, And Rsync?

May 31, 2010

As my proficiency with Linux improves slowly, I've been trying to find the answers for myself, but in this situation I must admit I find myself rather stumped. I have a perfectly nicely working Fedora 12 install on an 80GB SATA drive, and when it hit an error and wouldn't boot last week (easily fixed with fsck from the initial command line) I panicked and ordered a new 250 GB drive. It got here and I might as well use it, I thought to myself, so I went about trying to figure out how to move my install without having to reset all of my settings, programs and so on. I didn't want to mess with dd because I'm not so so clear on resizing my partitions once the copy is done (if someone thinks this is a better idea I'm open to suggestions.) After some poking around I found this set of instructions which I attempted to follow to the letter, but hit some snags. I understand this thread I am referring to may be a bit outdated, which is why (I assume) I hit a bump here

Code:
# mount /dev/hdy1 /boot
mount returns an error demanding I specify the file system type. At a loss, I barreled on until
Code:

[Code]...

To summarize, I partitioned and mounted my new drive using fdfisk and the instructions provided above, then used rsync to copy over all of the files, so as far as I know the new drive is ready to go, just not yet bootable. Opening the Grub.conf file in Kwrite (as root) returns a blank page. What do I do now?

As a side note, you can see that I am not too squeamish about the terminal, so I would prefer to find a "command line only" solution to this relatively simple (?) procedure.

Ubuntu :: Editing The Grub / Load Into Windows 7?

I have finally installed ubuntu 10.4 alongside windows 7.However, the grub doesn't show windows 7 so I can't boot into it.

Attached is a screenshot of "gparted". Windows 7 is installed on "sda2" and Ubuntu is on "sda6". How do I edit the grub to be able to load into windows 7?

And I faced another problem after installation. The pc kept freezing, I couldn't enter ubuntu nor use the live version on my usb stick. It kept freezing.

EDIT: I restarted and it froze again. I had to restart at least times before it allowed me into ubuntu. I'm wondering if it's a hard-disk issue since it's giving me a hard disk error whenever I login. Even though I've been running windows 7 for the past 9 months without any problem.
