View 5 RepliesI need to edit a line in a file in gedit, but its read only. I need to change
; default-sample-rate = 44100
to
default-sample-rate=44800.
Would anyone know if there is an option to make a read only file editable? Judging by the responses to the thread I followed to enable my soundcard, it is possible, and perhaps there is some setting etc that needs changing
I turned my home PC running Ubuntu 10.04 into a server, and so i am so lost, after reading like a 10-20 different guides and/or official docs, I am totally lost.
All I wanted was to create a custom 404 error page...i read about how people edited .htaccess files to customize error pages, i tried and failed also, editing apache2.conf, I got lost and i dont wanna mess up everything and also, how you're supposed to not touch either of those as its not how it should be done and instead you need to edit httpd.conf and i did and FAILED! again...
Also how do I make it so that I can make subdomain(s) on my site? and wth is a name server and where do I get one?
Is there a way to create a Seperate X Server on openSUSE 11.2 without editing the xorg.conf file? I red on this forum that should not be used any longer.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi has setup a persistent DNS cache to improve my web-browsing. it works wonders and with my ICC built firefox my web-browsing is laser-fast, pretty much like using internet explorer in windows! however, everytime i reboot, my modifications to /etc/resolv.conf have been replaced... 1st. the file must contain:
# Generated by NetworkManager (obviously modified by this)
nameserver 127.0.0.1 <----this is lost on reboot, and is needed to make it all work
nameserver 209.226.175.223
nameserver 198.235.216.134
i have tried to add this to - System/administration/network, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. 2nd. my next problem is that when fedora 12 starts up,i need it to start "dnsmasq".i have tried to add it as a startup application, but it doesn't start automatically.so i end up having to start it manually everytime:
sudo /etc/init.d/dnsmasq start
it is annoying, but so far i just deal with it, because my browsing is that much faster! i am planning to post a tutorial for those interested in faster web-browsing in linux, but until i can make the changes perminent there isn't much point.
PS: i have tried to write a shell script to do this and every which way i try it fails
I'm trying to make sure I don't screw anything up. When I type in the following into the terminal:
sudo hdparm -M 128 /dev/sda
Are the changes permanent, even if I restart? If not, how can I make sure it is permanent? I've read of going into the /etc/hdparm.conf file and editing it, but what exactly do I type and where should it be put in the file?
I have recently used PowerTop to get information about what settings I could tweak to make my laptop more power efficient. However, my problem is that all such changes seem to dissapear as soon as I reboot my machine. For example, if I run:
echo 1500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs
This value will have been rewritten to 500 when I reboot. Is there any way to change this, and make sure that any and all changes I do to my system remain permanent until I change them to something else? This question is of course not limited to Powertop, I would also like changes I do via for example cpufreq to be permanent as well.
Is there any way of making nomodeset permanent one has to reinstall? I know at least 1 distro has an etc/sysconfing/kernel file you can edit to make the value NO_KMS_IN_INITRD=yes
then mkinitrd makes nomodeset permanent Otherwise its a real bind to have to keep burrowing into the grub2 menu each time to make sure it loads.. :>(
I am using RHEL4 server in my network. I have configured VLAN in my network. i am using two gatways to access my Network. I also add two gateways to both the network. but only one gateways will work. Then I added a route for the other netowrk. but when i restart my computer my route is deleted. i used this command to add the route
route add -net 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 gw 10.0.0.1
what i should do that my route should remain permanent either i restart my computer.
I'm seeking to make permanent a selection in openSUSE-11.4 LXDE between english and Thai keyboards. And I need help here, as I have only succeed partially. After installing Thai via YaST regional settings, I followed the advice in an LXDE forum here LXDE.org Forum - View topic - How to add layouts to keyboard preferences in LXDE? and on the LXDE Panel I righted click on LXPanel->Add/Remove Panel Items->Panel Applets->Add->Keyboard Layout Switcher. Upon a restart of X that gave me a US flag symbol (for US keyboard) in lower right hand corner. No other language selection. I then as a regular user sent the command
Code:
setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll us,th
and I then had a choice between Thai and US keyboard which worked well. That unfortunately is only temporary until the next reboot. HOW to make it permanent ? I tried, and I was unable to make that permanent. I tried adding .Xkbmap to /home/user (restarted/tested) and when that failed I tried adding .Xmodmap to /home/user (restarted/tested) and when that failed I tried adding /etc/X11/Xkbmap (restarted/tested) and when that failed I added same line to /etc/X11/Xmodmap (restarted/tested) and that also failed. The line in all cases was
Code:
-option grp:ctrl_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll us, th
I also tired editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90_keytable.conf file, changing it to
Code:
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "LocalKeyboard"
MatchIsKeyboard "on"
Option "XkbLayout" "us, th"
[code]....
I could create a script with my 1st successful effort (and have that run when LXDE starts up) but surely there is a more elegant way? I am also NOT keen to have this system wide (even thou I tried that system wide (unsuccessfully) at the end) but I would rather only have this for one LXDE user.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Version and the entries did in /etc/resolve.conf all the time it is cleaning as and when i am restarting my systems. How to make is permanent solution to keep all the entries done in /etc/resolve.conf

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am just entering the Linux world. All these years I wanted to test Linux but did not have the resources to make a new computer. Then I found Puppy Linux by chance. Nearly all the work I do with Windows 7/XP can be done with Puppy Linux. I am running it from a CD. I developed a smartfont for an Indic language called Sinhala, which uses ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1, SBCS) character set.It makes typing Sinhala, one of the more complex of Indic scripts, easy.
Essentially, this is a transliteration of the 'complex' script into Latin character set and then showing it back in the native script by way of the smartfont. See it here: [URL] Of course, you have no clue what it says. If you copy the text and look, you'll understand what is going on. You can type it with the dead-key keyboard. Only problem is that in certain situations, the font makes conjoint letters where you don't want them. You can prevent it by inserting the ZWNJ, Zero-width non-joiner (u200C), but the keyboard does not have it. Is there a way to edit the keyboard layout and make a modified key layout?
My laptop screen isn't working but I don't want to abandon my laptop so I am trying to hook up a new monitor. I'm using my 1 HDMI port, and my BIOS doesn't recognize the monitor on boot up. Also, my xorg.conf file is not configured for this monitor. My question is what should my xorg.conf look like? I have a bit of a start on it(see attached) but it is not quite right. How do I set up the Toshiba as the default screen, in order to use this monitor when Linux starts? Other info: I use Debian 5.0 with Gnome.

I used this tutorial to get the driver installed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm testing a new PC and for business reasons it has to be able to run with Ubuntu 8.04 .The first problem I had was with the Intel GMA 4500 graphics driver. I have managed to resolve that and can now get resolutions > 800x600. However since then the mouse pointer is intermittently corrupt. I've attached an image showing the corrupt pointer which is about the size of a thumbnail. The driver I have installed is xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.4.0~melchiorre-5_i386.deb .I've also attached a copy of my xorg.conf file. While I've been writing this post I've noticed that if I take a screenshot or if I connect to the PC using VNC the entire screen is corrupt.

I installed Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux Enterprise 5 on my PC for my purpose. The PC is used by other family members too and they need only Windows OS for browsing. It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. I have a c file, and I want to open it but not in the terminal. After changing the permission, I tried: vi, pico, ed and vim. But, all open it in the terminal. How can I change the permission of that file to be opened and edited not in the terminal? When I change the permission from the terminal, it only let me edit it through the terminal, and when I check the permission of the file I see it as was it (no change). I need a permanent permission. Although, I command as a root.

I've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :
Code: sudo gdm start into the command prompt, hoping that I would be able to start things manually. Instead, it spat out this: Code:
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No such file or directory.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to find users : no seat-id found.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Gdm Display: display lasted 0.070467 seconds
The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.
I don't understand this error nor do I know how to solve the issue that is causing the error. Anyone care to comment?

I know JohnVV. "Install a supported version of Fedora, like Fedora 11". This is on a box that has all 11 releases of Fedora installed. It's a toy and I like to play around with it.
I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?
