Once I restarted the Virtual Machine and after that it is accepting the same password to login. I am not able to find out the problem, why the server is not able to validate the password until the virtual machine gets rebooted.

In this instance, it's automatically taken the same user name as is used to login on Windows.When I try and log in on Ubuntu, it comes up with th user name from Windows, busks for a password. On Windows, there's no password set, so I don't know what to put.I've tried things like 'password' and 'Password' and the likes. I also tried going onWindows and adding a password there to see if Ubuntu would find it, but no such luck.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI may be a beginner to Ubuntu 10.10, but I'm fairly certain that this is weird: I have had no trouble logging into my Ubuntu 10.10 netbook until this morning. Now I am unable to get past the login screen. It says that there is an Authentication Failure, which is bogus. Not only should the password work, but it does in the Terminal. I am able to login to the terminal and gain root access.
I can even change my unix password, but no matter what I try I can't get to my desktop. I did run into a major issue with a frozen program. Rather than reboot, I tried to close it using the kill command. What ended up happening was that all that remained was my wallpaper, probably a bad move on my part, but I'm a rookie. I think I killed all running applications. This happened last night... so probably related.
I newly installed Ububtu 8,04.3. I formatted my hard drive and erased Windows XP and tried to do the manual partitioning but don't have enough knowledge so picked the guided tour. Everything seemed to install but when I restarted it comes to "computer log-in" and wants a user name and password. I put in the user name I chose during installation and tried to put in the password but it wouldn'd type in - it also seemed to want a name for "computer." Does anyone know where I went wrong? I've been struggling to learn computer stuff on my own.

Having installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?

I needed to use Synaptic Package Manager to install an app, but the dialog box ("enter the Administrative Password") that pops up before you can use Synaptic doesn't recognize my password ("incorrect password). I tried typing it into a text editor and it's spelled right, caps lock not turned on or anything.
In Terminal, sudo recognizes it, and it is recognized when I log into Ubuntu. I'm the sole user, I have admin privileges, I've been doing admin things.
I just now did System > Administration > Users and Groups and got a dialog box saying
"Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)"
Moving past that, I changed my user password, and Ubuntu authenticated it.

I just finished installing 10.10 on my pc. the problem is that i cant login to the desktop i enter the password, the login sound plays and im stuck looking at the wallpaper. nothing else. i tried logging in safe mode and it worked. how can i get it to work normally?

Pentium 4 2.6 ghz
512mb ram
ati radeon 9600 graphics card
And i installed it using wubi.
I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.

I have installed CC,CLC,SC,NC and a client and logged into thje user interface using my browser for the first time with bith username and passwd as admin and downloaded the credentials.But now as I try to login with the same username and passwd, it says that its an invalid login. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.
I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server.What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. The problem then is, that when the server is down, I couldn't login to my client anymore. So I created a local user with the same name on the client but with a different password (after I shut the nis server down, if nis server was on, I couldn't create a local user with the same name). I then edited etc/nssswitch.conf as follows:

I ahve configured 30 Network device ( Cisco Switches and Routers), For most of the devices MRTG is working fine but for some devices it is not able to generate log file and giving the following error:
