I've been reading the RUTE Linux book and they recommend the use of xinetd to run services. However, this book is already a bit outdated, and I was wondering whether this still applies to today's circumstances?

I installed Subversion and xinetd and added Subversion as a service to xinetd.conf as instructed at http://www.codeandcoffee.com/2007/06...rver-on-linux/
I restarted the xinetd service using /sbin/service. however, Subversion does not end up being listed in /etc/xinetd.d nor does it seem to be running and occupying the port altogether.

is possible to edited the default RHEL CD to have it automatically install RHEL based off of a kickstart file that I will store locally on the CD. My plan would be to put a cd in a server and have the OS automatically being installed.

When I shut down or restart my computer, I can see there are some errors related to failed services (about xinetd, I think, which is NOT enable). But it scroll too fast and I cannot note them. Sorry for the "newbie" question: how can I see the log of what happened ? (dmesg only gives log about kernel, if I'm not wrong.)

I am really not very experienced with linux and have only just started working off the command line in windows as well.
I know the basics but I am trying to install R-1 and I was having a lot of difficulties and figured out that it was that xinetd was not running.
So I tried to run it service xinetd start and it said unecognized service so then I installed xinetd and there was already a xinetd.d directory with all of the processes i needed with the .conf file but so when i run xinetd -d
Code:
My xinetd.conf file looks like this:
Code:
# All service files are stored in the /etc/xinetd.d directory
#
includedir /etc/xinetd.d
# End /etc/xinetd
EOF
This is what one of the files in xinetd.d looks like
Code:
I need to get xinetd running so that i can finish installing R-1.

I have installed RHEL 5 in on a Virtual PC. I am stuck around while installing the yum server. Initially, I tried installing it by mounting the DVD but it didn't work for me after which I did a lot of google search I tried all the various procedures of the installation of yum server/RPM packages. But however I am finding it impossible to go ahead and I am geting an ***error 404: not found*** way of installation. Also since I am not well acquainted with linux, can I request for a detailed explanation of each & every steps involved.

I just got a question from a customer(actually from a customer to my manager then to me) and he is asking the following question: What are the components that were installed with RHEL? It may sound like a silly question but to me it sounds vague. The main thing I am thinking about now is during install you can select three components: webserver software development and virtualisation.

I am trying to install RHEL 6 on a machine without a monitor. After reading through their installation guide I have decided to try a vnc installation using my laptop. The guide says: To activate the VNC connect mode, pass the vncconnect boot parameter:
boot: linux vncconnect=HOST
The problem is that I have never had to do this before, I have no idea what "pass a boot parameter" means.

I've asked this question more or less before on stackoverflow and believed it to be solved (hence accepted the answer) but it turns out it wasnt solved.In simple terms, I've written a python script which just outputs text constantly to stdout, thats all it does 24/7. I've linked it to this xinetd file
service myservice
{
instances = 1
[code].....
