I'm installing Ubuntu for the first time in my laptop, whose O.S is in japanese... this is a FUJITSU, Windows Vista and Core Duo, but I don't know which characteristics are relevant, I would like to know the procedure to get necessary information(drivers are the only ones I think I should get, but I don't know where to get them) to install Ubuntu.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a linux (Slackware) machine and the time/date is like, June 23rd 2003, 10:00am (It's 11 here) and I am not able to set the time to have it correct. I change the timezome to Montreal but the time is still wrong.
Is there a way to force it to sync with my domain controler or even another online NTP server?
I'm just wondering what the limits for time are. I have a program that always takes exactly 20 ms, so I assume this is the lowest it can measure, but I want to see if there's some sort of documentation of this.

I typically spend I would reckon quite honestly about 70-80% of my time with computers just fixing stuff up that either I broke or was broke in the first place. Usually it's the latter by some considerable margin. That's really inefficient, isn't it? I just wondered what others' experiences are of this phenomenon. Obviously I don't do computers for a living or I would have starved years ago. So what is the Panel's consensus view on the percentage of wasted time we should expect to spend, on average, "running just to stand still" on maintenance tasks?

I was created one folder in linux with current time was 1978(For example). I was moved this folder to usb(FAT32 file format).While seeing this folder in window its not showing the folder time created time stamp, because the USB file system only support the year after 1980 . But again i am putting the same folder in linux ,its showing the correct time stamp.How is it possible? Because FAT32 only supports timestamp after 1980, but still its showing 1978 in linux system

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.
Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?
I recently got Ubuntu up running on my HP DV1000 laptop. The problem I started noticing is that whenever I were to install packages via software center or even from the web. They simply won't install. After I enter my password it just hangs and won't continue forward.

It's a menu full of applications.I've filled mine with different applications I've reinstalled. There are many repeats of application names, with the only difference being most of them don't work. This is due to changing the installation location, via WINEPREFIX. No biggie.I'm also using Ubuntu 10.10. It's very nice!

Plan B: The easiest solution, so far, is to reinstall ubuntu and install these applications correctly the first time. Then I won't have all of those repeats.
I cannot install Mac OS X on my MacBook. When I boot from the DVD the only option I get is to install the OS from Time Machine. I cannot do a clean install from the DVD. Why is that? And how can I change it? How do I get the computer to install Mac OS X from the DVD, and not Time Machine?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu Server 10.4.2 LTS (32-bit) on Virtualbox 4.0.6 The install went great everything seemed to work. But after it rebooted for the first time when install completed, it is prompting me for a username and password. Note, the only username and password i was prompted to set up was for non-admin stuff. So i tried this username and password i created during install, but it keeps saying 'login incorrect'. I have looked at other threads, although they are mostly for older Ubuntu Server versions, but i couldnt really find anything.
I tried to reinstall and go through the install slowly but still the same issue. i tried Ubuntu for username and no password, tried leaving username and password blank, tried root and the password i created... i tried everything I could think of...
I used unetbootin to put ubuntu 10.10 on a 2 gb usb key. I started up using the "try before installing" option and when I try to install in full it says I do not have 2.5 free gb's for the install. So I open up gparted only to find that only drive there is my 2bg usb key and I have no idea how to find my main hard drive.
I tried searching and tried the following; I checked the sata setting in the boot menu and it is IDE. The computer has also never been used in a raid setup.
It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?
I have several file servers in our offices and I am relatively new to Ubuntu / Linux. I get notices that there are updates for the server software from time to time. Is it typical to update everything when available or should I follow "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." mentality?I would hate for everything to be working fine and then have an update throw me a curve.

But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

For like windows you can resore your os to a state of peace kind of. If you messed up your vital files you could go back in time and restore you computer to a selected time. I was wondering if you could do that for ubuntu
View 4 Replies View RelatedEver since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.
Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.
Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).
It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.
