I am trying to do a 'light' install of Ubuntu 10.04 using the alternate install CD. Here is how i am planning to do it:
1. Perform a console only installation(Standard system only on d-i tasksel) 2. Install gnome-core 3. Then install the packages i need using apt.
1. Would such an installation lead have any significant performance(RAM usage) advantage over a full fledged installation?
2. Is there a way i could install gnome-core from the installation CD instead of downloading them from the repository?
3. Would installing just gnome-core mean that synaptic & update-manager wouldn't be available? i am hoping that it wouldn't be the case I checked their dependencies from packages.ubuntu.com, it doesn't look like they need gnome-desktop-environment to be installed first.
4. Would such an install have any more device driver related issues (eg.display drivers) than a regular install?
I need to somehow do a yum installation (or equivalent of) on a system that is offline with no access to the internet. (I do have access to another Linux system that has internet access, but the Linux installations on both systems have different packages installed and enabled.)
Let's say the command to enter is 'yum install pkg1 pkg2 pkg3' (the documentation for some applications I need indicate the installation instructions this way, and not as the actual RPMs I need). Is there a way for me to run that on my offline system?
e.g. one way I can think of is to run that command on the online system, somehow if possible take note of what RPMs get installed, then transfer them to the offline system via USB and install all the RPMs via rpm command.
The problem with my above idea is that the two systems have different packages enabled, so even if yum on the online system shows a few dependencies being downloaded, I could run download and install all these RPMs and their dependencies on the offline system only to find several more missing dependencies, and dependencies of those dependencies.
I've got an ASUS eee1005 that I'm trying to load eeebuntu -- I've read good things about it! However, I managed to get it (partially) installed using only unetbootin and the eeebuntu-nbr iso. Luckily I've got other working laptops in the house, or I'd be stuck because now I've got a partially installed distro that isn't allowing me usage of my wireless. Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to go back to the install process and load all the packages I want, which, hopefully, will give me NetworkManager so that I can finally connect. I can boot to the thumbdrive (8gig, btw) but I don't think I've got the right files on it to do the install. Here's what appears on the thumbdrive:
[code]...
I would think that with these files on the thumbdrive, it could find its way into the install process. Apparently not. I've read most, if not all of the 'install from USB' threads and how-to's, and it's still not working right - Now, having a partially installed distro (with GUI that's not GNOME, or KDE. . ?) Are there any options I can use to pickup where the install left off and start adding packages? Or should I just scrap it and re-install?
I just installed win 7 and now can't install fedira 13 on the partition that i made for it on the same drive. The problem is that after installation of win 7 i lost the ability to boot form cd. In bios i still have cd set up to boot first and drive second, but win 7 did something that overrides bios set up. I even tried Esc for boot menu, then i select to boot form cd, but it still boots in windows. What can I do to fix this?
I have 40gb of hd and I want Xp and fedora on it. I installed Xp first and now I want to install Fedora 12, every time I chose the space to iinstalll it, it says that there is no enough space to install it, although the xp just took less than 2gb of the disk. How can I resize it so that there is enough space?

I'm trying to install PHP 5.2.10 on Ubuntu 10.04 using apt-get. I used "Approach 3" from this page but instead of using add-apt-repository I made a file called /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa:txwikinger.php5.2-source.list that contains the line:URL...
I have downloaded a tar.gz program how is it installed.
I find with windows using dos programing it is easy navigating between files and directories, gw basic etc.
With terminal you type in cd .. it takes you back to the home folder then if you type cd .. again it takes you back to the desktop, if you repeat the same sequence again cd .. terminal just returns with desktop, terminal just appears to work once and thats what makes it hard understanding the programing of terminal.
I find the only way around it is by turning terminal of and restarting it.
I`m having problems trying to install ubuntu 10.10 in a pentium 4.I run memory test in the start page after selecting language and I see lots of errors. This is strange because I have added memory and changed the disk, which was broken.
Im installing Ubuntu Server 9.04 from a CD, the installer works fine until i need to get the drivers for my RAID card. (this is asked when detecting disk on installation) I put the drivers onto a USB (MSDOS boot diskette) mounted it by pressing ALT+F2 to get a terminal during the installation. then copied the files from the USB to /tmp When I try and run the driver from /tmp i get.
I have been using Ubuntu for several months and am "getting to grips" with it. However, recently I needed to renew my hdd. I used recovery disks and back-ups of my "data" - all went well and Vista runs fine and I can access my "stuff". But when I install Ubuntu (Wubi) using a pendrive OR a cd - Ubuntu seems to install OK. But after I reboot my pc and get the option to select an OS - Vista OR Ubuntu - I cannot move the highlighted option with the arrow keys on my keyboard so it defaults (after 20 seconds) to Vista every time? I would like to try the newer (10.10) Ubuntu Release.
installing gimp onto my laptop, i am clearly a little useless. i have tried the apt-get install gimp that is says on the gimp download page but all i get is an error message in the terminal saying : E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? what do i do?
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a machine here. Tried to SSH to it and failed. Tried to "ssh localhost" from the machine itself and that failed. Did a quick google search and found out that an SSH server is not installed by default.
But how do I install it?
I tried the following, which failed:
Code: sudo apt-get install openssh-server Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 in my machine... in order to connect to internet(EVDO), through other forums i found out that i'd be requiring wvdial. So i downloaded its source file but i'm having problem installing it... also it seems that wvdial itself requires some other software installed earlier.

I tried to install ubuntu 64bit inside windows 7 Ultimate 64bit using WUBI and received an error message then the install aborted. I may attempt to install without WUBI but I'm afraid I may mess up my machine and be at square one again. Homemade AMD64 Quad cor Phenom 8 gigs memeory. Runs W7 fine.

im using a toshiba laptop.am tryin to dual boot this laptop with windows nd linux.now the problem is i tried ubuntu but due to ACPI error i cant boot into ubuntu after install.now am tryin to install OPENSUSE.what i wanna know is besides boot being a primary partition should da pthers also be primary partition .if /swap & / & /usr are logical partitions.how do i create the extended partition to envelope the abv 3 partitions from the install cd partition manager.it jus gives me option of
1. primary partition 2. logical partition
from what i understand linux can hv 4 primary partitions and each primary partition can be an extended parttion which can then be sub divided into smaller logical partitions but i cant seem to designate this extended partition during installation.
