View 3 RepliesI seem to be missing drivers for my Gateway laptop MA7. I have looked in System->Admin->Hardware Drivers, but it does not show up in there. There are also no devices listed in Sound->Hardware. I'm guessing at this point that I don't have the driver installed.
However, I get the following output code...
Recently installed Ubuntu 9.1 following an easy how to. The install session went really well, smooth and only had one little speed bump when deciding which drive to install to (running raid and did not want to loose other partition). Like most speed bumps I got passed it. Ran all the updates then decided to start listening to music with Rythmbox Music Player. The sound coming out of my Klipsch Pro Media 4.1 was muffled and sounded like just the subwoofer was on. I checked all connections and they were fine. I tried looking for equalizer but did not find it and then noticed the sound was like a skipping record. So I looked it up and came across some posts that I could not figure out if they were for my problem. Seemed to me they were just leading me in circles.

I have installed pclos 2010, really great as it is the only os i could find that booted up my Speedtouch modem as a noob with noob skills. I like it but I have no sound. I think there may be an issue because my integrated graphics have been upgraded. I think my sound card is integrated with the AC'97 ATI which has been upgraded.
At boot I get 'device /dev/dsp can't be opened, sound server will continue using the null output device.' I have tried the pclos forum but sadly I only have some guy telling me all about his machine and his experience and as yet no help or support. Anyone out there able to give a noob some practical step by step advice?
I Just Installed Linux (Debian 5.0.7) on my iMac G4 powerpc and almost everything works but the sound.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got an urgent problem! I had some viruses as my program told me and in the end I had to restart my eee pc!Problem is now after it starts and you click on the log me in icon for the netbook it makes the nice hello sound, takes some time and then does the shut down (goodbye) sound. So basically the netbook booted already right? But I cant log myself in! What can I do?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have dual boot (win xp & Xubuntu) there's no sound on Xubuntu 8.04. I had Ubuntu before and it could see the sound card normally without even installing anything.
so what should I do now? My sound card isn't old..it's realtek, I don't remember the exact model though.
This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.
View 2 Replies View Relatedsound card is working well inside SuSE and everything is ok there. But when I install Windows 7 or XP inside Xen Virtualization software, I can't use sound card and Windows is unable to find any sound hardware.
View 1 Replies View Relatedtrying to get everything set up in Debian lenny on my new Toshiba staellite L500. I have successfully installed the wireless drivers and graphics card and have them both up and running. But I'm having trouble with the sound card. Specifically, it appears to be installed but I cant get any sound or any devices related to sound (speakers, volume control, alsamixer) to work at all.
this is my kernel:

I'm trying to use an application (e.g., mplayer) to play sound that comes in my sound card (via the mic jack). (What I'm really trying to do is sync a sports broadcast by putting a delay on AM audio, as described here. I'm stuck at the part where it says "this shouldn't be too difficult".) I've seen some hints that there might be code-heavy solutions using LADSPA or some JACK SDK, but there's just gotta be a simpler way. I'm hoping for something like
Code:
mplayer -delay -7 - < /dev/mic
but I'm darned if I can find it. I'm sure there are plenty of other sports fans who would find this useful for syncing radio with the digital TV feed...
My usb sound card has been identified by alsamixer, however it won't make any sound when i put headphones in it. The volume is up, I know the sound card works.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.40, I no longer have sound, except for the Ubuntu sound when it loads during start up. Does anyone know how I can recover sound on my computer?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
I bought a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1 sound card because I had read online that this card was a good choice with Linux and came with universal driver software. I installed the hardware correctly (as it works with WinXP) but I'm not able to get it working with Ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just did a clean install to 9.10 from 9.04. Sound seems to work just fine, but whenever I open up a video file I get this error in the corner:
Phonon:KDE's Multimedia Library
The audio playback device SiS Sl7012 with AD1986 (SiS Sl7012) does not work. Falling back to playing/recording through the PulseAudio sound server
Whats the best way to go about getting rid of this?
I had a similar problem with previous ubuntu release on the same machine: and again, I have no sound at all.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to reinstall vista on my laptop and 7 in my desktop a few days ago, and I kid you not, both failed on installation. I've just done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 after using 8.10 for a couple of years. (I have to say that after 2 years, the problems I encountered when first installing 8.10 remain in 10,04 but now with additional sound problems !) I use an Acer Aspire 5720 and sound *WORKED* under 8.10 fine. Now I have done a clean install of 10.04 all I get are the bongos at the login then nothing. I can't play any sound files etc. The card is recognised but something is wrong. Here are the results of some commands I have given :
Code:
aplay -l

I upgraded to Lucid from Jaunty on a 3 1/2 year old toshiba Satellite by doing a clean install. There is no sound anywhere. I had no sound problems with Jaunty. I ran the alsa upgrade script from this site:
[URL]
There was no change I could see after this was done.
In sound preferences>
hardware--there are no entries;
input--the input volume is shaded
output--the entry is Dummy Output stereo
The alsamixer shows only the pcm control, there are no capture controls. In select sound card (F6) I selected HDA ATI SB (default was only other choice). I have Linux Mint 9 (based on Lucid) on a Dell mini-9 and the sound works.
I tried Intrepid on this computer a few years back, and remember sweating over my computer for days trying to get the sound to work, before eventually giving up and going back to Windows. Now I figured I'd give it a second go. 100% fresh install, Lucid Lynx. I was hoping maybe the new version would have fixed whatever I was having trouble with before. No such luck. Have checked that nothing is muted, in the tray icon and in alsamixer and in a bunch of others. Have made sure that I'm in all the proper groups.
"aplay -l" gives me:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

I am trying to set my computer up to do sound sequencing. I want to plug my MIDI keyboard in and record with a sequencer. Running 10.04, was following a tutorial on installing JACK, and my audio stopped working. Since then, I've gone through all guides I can find, some advising an upgrade of ALSA, some saying to use OCC. I've tried both, but nothing seems to work.
I suspect it may have something to do with libjack0. I could not install jackd because it claimed libjack0 to be the wrong version, and for some reason I couldn't upgrade. So I uninstalled libjack0, then installed jackd, which automatically included the version of libjack0 it wanted. After that, I could get the JACK server running, but the computer had no sound.
I will post whatever logs or information necessary to troubleshoot, but I don't know exactly how or what to post. If you need logs, please tell me how to get them.
I had sound. My sound stops working after install jack. Jack server starts well, and the jack log shows no error messages. If I run Muse, it recognizes jack and show no error messages, but I have no sound output. Where should I start investigating? I'm using Karmic.
