General :: Install Ubuntu 11.0 In Windows 7?

I tried to install ubuntu 64bit inside windows 7 Ultimate 64bit using WUBI and received an error message then the install aborted. I may attempt to install without WUBI but I'm afraid I may mess up my machine and be at square one again. Homemade AMD64 Quad cor Phenom 8 gigs memeory. Runs W7 fine.

I've read that, when configuring a dual-boot system, you should install Windows first to avoid any issues. Some questions: I'm assuming this has to do with the boot loader so: How is Windows boot loader so different that this matters? If I'm totally off, please explain. Is this the same case with Windows 7 and Windows XP? Depending on question 1 of course: Will installing Windows later on mean that it will definitely not work or just that you might encounter issues later on? Some tutorials are kind of ambiguous about that point.

I installed Ubuntu edition (10.04) on my windows 7, completely eliminating it to the original installation. After I was forced to reverse the process, but could not find tools or explanations of how to do it.
To clarify the equipment, it is: a netbook, acer, no optical drive cd / dvd, the process should be fully via USB.

I keep getting an error when trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on Windows 7. I insert the cd and then restart the computer. Everything looks like its loading great, but it gets stuck on the loading screen. So I pressed Esc, and it shows the following errors:
(process: 314): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_(r): failed due to unknown user id (0)
/init: line 7: can't open /dev/sdb: No medium found
/init: line 7: can't open /dev/sdb: No medium found
/init: line 7: can't open /dev/sdb: No medium found
[code]...
I have also tried the check disc for defects options, but that also gets stuck on the loading screen. What am I missing?

I've been trying to install Linux as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510.It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux. The issue I'm having is that when I run Linux installers by boot from CD they see the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10, Kbuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14 and they all have the same problem.I have also tried the Ubuntu "install in Windows" option and could not get it to work.EDIT:Booting Gparted 0.8.0 from a usb drive did not work. It reported the entire drive as unpartitioned.

I have 4 old P4s that I've been playing with different distros with. Now I'd like to build a functional network with them. I also have a little old P3 that I'd like to turn into a firewall/router.
I'll keep Ubuntu on my wife laptop and maybe PC-BSD on my more powerful personal computer. The others I'd like to turn into servers: DHCP, DNS, web server (Apache, MySQL or PostgresSQL), file/print server, entertainment center.
I have X Windows running on the laptop and will on my computer but do the others need it? If not how are they configured?

I am trying to dual boot Windows and Linux. I would like to continue using the Windows bootloader in my MBR.
I installed Windows 7 first. During the install I left some unallocated space that I intended to install Linux.
I found this guide: [URL]
It says to install GRUB to the bootsector of the partition that Linux is being installed to and not the MBR of your hard drive.
I am trying to install Linux Mint Debian to the second partition. When the installer gets to where you are asked to install GRUB the only option is to install GRUB to /dev/sda which I believe is the MBR.
I decided just not to install GRUB and proceeded with the installation.
How can I install GRUB to the bootsector of my Linux partition?

I've got a Atheros AR9285 wireless card. I'd like to install the driver so I can access the internet, but I cannot install it without installing the driver to access the internet. See the problem?
Fortunately, I've got a Windows partition set up that can access the internet. Hence this post. How can I go about installing the driver?
Where can I download the driver from? Where should I put it on my hard drive? What command do I use to install the driver?
Edit:
I'm on a gateway laptop. I know I can't install the drive from within windows. I'm asking which driver to download and what command installs the driver from within Linux.
Edit2:
I can't use LAN in this case.

I have OpenSuse 11.4 running and I just installed Windows 7 in the same HDD on some extra space. Windows killed grub (I knew it would) so I put in my grub cd and selected "Detect any OS". It took a second and found my new windows installation along with my Opensuse (one option was single user mode, the other was just normal). When I selected the regular opensuse install, all I get is a nice looking terminal thingy with suse's logo in the background and I get a login prompt (command line login, no gui). So my first problem is that -- I can't get the GUI to work. Also, when I try to login at the prompt I get this error:Error in service module

I want to install grub inside windows 7. I don't want to partition anything neither I want to remove Windows Boot Loader (BCD). I simply want to Use Grub from windows 7 boot menu. I want to do this so for frugal install of linux distros such as puppy, slitaz, etc. I have used WinGrub on Windows XP and it worked fine. But I don't think that will work on Windows 7.
