OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Install 12.1 M5 From Hard Disk - Error - No Repository Found

Sep 13, 2011

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.

I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.

But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.

I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.

General :: Install Deb Packages In Another Directory?

Jun 22, 2010

I have a netbook with a tiny hard drive, and an external drive to go with it. It's running Ubuntu. I want to be able to install some packages to that external hard drive, so that when the hard drive is not plugged in the netbook still functions, just with out some functionality. It doesn't have to be this way exactly, I just want the effect of offloading some of my installed libraries and programs onto the portable hard drive. In other words, just mounting some directories from the external drive wont work because I at least need some basic programs to run normally.

Here are some things I was thinking about but wasn't able to find enough information to actually understand if they are feasible, or how to go about doing them.

Can I do something like this if I use the --root=/media/external switch of dpkg install and then add /media/external/ to my system path?

What if I create some kind of wrapper for dpkg that will install the package into an alternate root (--root=/media/external) and then create a symlink in the internal file system to every file that was just installed on the external file system?

How about something where I chroot into the external drive?

How about something using LVM?

General :: Why Upgrade / Install Of TeXLive On Fedora12 Does Not Create Directory

Mar 19, 2010

Does anybody know why the upgrade/install of TeXLive on Fedora12 does not create the directory /usr/local/ texlive/2009.I have seen this directory mentioned for other 2009s, but when I installed 2009 it did not create this. (Or, maybe there was some problem... ?) It is only slightly relevant because (sudo) texhash does not include any /usr/local directories in 2009, only /usr/share.

In my 2007 version I had the usual /usr/local/share/texmf/tex structure in which I place /latex and a /bibtex. I had read/write access and so I placed all my .sty and .bib files, as well as image files and other stuff I shared between projects. Now, I have a ~/texmf with /tex and /bibtex and have gotten rid of /latex subdirectory. Now I don't have to texhash when I add new stuff.Other than this, is there any reason why Fedora TeXLive-2009 would not create /usr/local/texlive ? (Unless this is because, as the wiki page notes , "it is in testing state so bugs could occur."

Ubuntu :: Utsrelease.h Not Found When Trying To Install Fglrx In 10.04

Jun 27, 2010

I need support for adjusting over/underscan for my Mitsibushi WD-Y577 57" DLP HDTV (a breed between WD-57733 and WD-57734), because the open source ATI Radeon driver does not include it. When I attempt to install fglrx, here's what I'm getting:

apt-get install fglrx

Code:

Loading new fglrx-8.723.1 DKMS files...
First Installation: checking all kernels...
Building only for 2.6.33.5-rt23

[code]....

I have compiled 2.6.33.5 from source and patched it with 2.6.33.5-rt23. I have adjusted features take a lot of things off that I don't need. I need the real-time kernel for music creation using JACK (Jack Audio Control Kit).

Adjusting over/underscan requires an AMD Catalyst Control Center. Will there be future open-source ATI drivers that allow me to correct my display without having to change modelines in xorg? It will take a lot of trial and error to figure this out for my display. Note that even if I did install the kernel headers for 2.6.32-23-preempt or 2.6.33-23-realtime (depending on what I use), fglrx module will still fail to install, even if I install linux-source. I'm confused. I do want fglrx and I do need the real-time/low-latency kernel for music creation under Ubuntu 10.04.

Update: if you create a utsrelease.h header file inside /usr/include/linux directory, you can write out like this:

Code:

#define UTS_RELEASE "2.6.33.5-rc3" # replace the version number for your running kernel. You can then reinstall fglrx, but then I get this:

Code:

DKMS make.log for fglrx-8.723.1 for kernel 2.6.33.5-rt23 (x86_64)
Sun Jun 27 19:45:11 EDT 2010
AMD kernel module generator version 2.1
doing Makefile based build for kernel 2.6.x and higher

[code]....
