I have a Ubuntu system where the internet has been whitelisted so that I can't use Synaptic. I was wondering if there was a way to install GParted without Synaptic? Do something with the ISO file perhaps? Or would this turn out to be quite complicated?
I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:
Code: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda5
Disk /dev/sda5: 28.5 GB, 28566397440 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3473 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -u /dev/sda5
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.
Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.
I just installed a dual boot of ubuntu with XP on my laptop. I'm planning on deleting XP altogether and keeping ubuntu. Now, as I understand the best way to do this is to go to GParted, delete the ntfs partition, and format it to ext3. Does this sound right? Now the problem is I can't seem to get GParted installed. I go to the terminal window and type sudo apt-get install gparted but it doesn't work. I get the following messege.
Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information.. Done E: Couldn't find package gparte
how to update my system online (for example my firefox 3.0 to 3.5) but i can't figure out how this possibly works. I tried the "online update" using Yast2 but apparently (according to Yast) there is nothing at all to be patched on my system. I tried to click on the Firefox-3.5.5 rpm in the repository web-interface and open it using "install software" but the process aborts because of unresolved dependencies. Is there an easy way to update software without having to download/install every dependency manually?
I have been trying to resolve this issue and it's bewildering me... I have been trying to do the install on Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) and after setting up the keyboard language the installer locks up. The error message mentions it was unable to launch Gparted as it crashed.
I have also tried to launch Gparted from the system admin apps and Gparted will show it is trying to read the hard drives and then crashes. I have tried updating Gparted from the repo's and on launching it also crashes too.
i installed win7 ultimate on a 2TB HD and was hoping to dual-boot it with meerkat, i did a standard install and shrunk the partition using win7 disk management to leave 500GB for ubuntu.problem is ubuntu can't detect the existing win7 install, when selecting advanced setup it just shows one big unallocated partition.
i went back into win7 and extended the partition again, then booted into ubuntu live cd to see if maybe gparted would do the trick. gparted also cannot detect the existing win7 install and just displays unallocated 1.82TB.in terminal if i do 'sudo parted /dev/sda print' i get this message:
Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should.Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table? Yes/No? ^C
I will be installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS. The partitioning install section is text based and IMO a bit cryptic. I was wondering: Can I first set up my partitions with Gparted live disk and then pop-in the server install disk and install using the partition structure I made with GParted?
I know how to install VLC via terminal sudo aptitude install -vlc But i want to know how to install VLC manually by downloading package or something like that i googled but i didn't found anything ..
how to partition. I was getting sick of having to backup my data every time I had to reinstall Ubuntu, so someone recommend that I partition my hard drive so that I could store all my personal files ( documents, music, and vidoes ) onto the seperate partition. However I don't know how to do this. Furthermore when a new version of Ubuntu is release I always pick the install on the entire hard drive so the partition i installed would end up being deleted. How do you install Ubuntu by manually specifying the partitions.
How is the best way to do this?I have a USB drive that I use to transfer regular data, but how do I download gparted to it, and install it on another computer
yum can't find gtkmm-2.4 without it stops! checking for GTKMM... configure: error: Package requirements (gtkmm-2.4 > 2.8 ) were not met: No package 'gtkmm-2.4' found
I have a lexmark x2690 there is a deb package on lexmarks sight for my printer but being new to linux i am unsure how to manually install the driver I have read through a lot of documentation on installing packages but nothing has worked any help would be appreciated the driver i need to install is not listed under lexmark when you go to printer setup. The driver I need is located at [url] I tried the generic cups driver.
I am running a Dell Dimension 3000 and I intend to install Ubuntu on it. On it, there is a partition, Dell Utility Partition, which I am hesitant to overwrite. The main partition which I want to install Ubuntu on I formatted in ext4. I try to install Ubuntu from the live cd, but it won't allow me to strictly use the ext4 partition. It insists to either use the entire drive or to have me manually choose the partition. How would I go about doing that? I relatively new to Linux in general
I am trying to install ubuntu 9.1 on a 320 gig hard drive. I have manually created a 45 gig partition. When I try to install ubuntu from the cd,,, I can not install it.
How do I have to setup the 45 gigs to install Ubuntu on it? Swap partition? EXT2?
I want to install manually xcb_2.4 on Ubuntu 9.10. The problem is that the package neither contains a configure nor a install file so I cant use './configure' and 'make install'.
I think this goes here. I just installed Diablo II LOD on Wine today on my user account, which is not root, and I switched over to my brother's account I set up for him separate of mine and root and Diablo does not show up for him.How do I install a program not using the terminal or Synaptic and have the program show up for all accounts on my machine? It isn't a terrible problem. I just wanted to know how to do it.
I want to set up ubuntu 10.10 on a computer WITHOUT Internet access.I also need to install a package on it but it has several dependant libraries (eg libX11-dev)If i just have the names of those libraries & the package, where can i find them, so that they can be downloaded onto a pendrive & then installed onto the comp? (What would a library file look like after download?)
Also after i have copied the files onto the other comp (assuming that it was possible), how do i install the library? Would synaptics recognise that i have installed this library if done manually by this method?
Using install disc burned from ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso ; disc verified. Could not install because installation hung during partman. Booted into LiveCD (using same disc), and GParted works, but partman does not.
I've searched Google and this Forum with no luck; but perhaps I'm just not asking correctly. Any help - even a workaround Is there a way to use something other than partman, or to mount the root, home, and swap in a way that makes partman skip it during install?
how to upgrade my ubuntu 9.10 system. I would like to do a clean install of lucid, but I have way too many files. I have a big hard drive, so space was not a problem, and things got out of hand ^^ One thing you should know is that I have plenty of room for my files even if the drive was half it's size, so my idea is possible space-wise. (And I am prepared if this fails. I have backed up my stuff, but would like if it I didn't have to rely on that)
What I want to do is make a blank partition with gparted and install lucid on it. Then I want to keep it a dual boot just to make sure my hardware is working ok, then move my home folder to the new partition, make the lucid partition take the whole hard drive, and delete karmic. I do not want to upgrade because I messed up my install a lot while learning linux, so I really need to start over.
Want to repartition/resize existing 1/2 full 60MB sda2 currently containing NTFS. The "Allocate drive space" does not seem to have a resize option (the 10.04 docs claim there was a resize option here). When I run 10.10 gparted in live mode gparted crashes for unknown reason before it even finishes scanning the disk. Am I missing something here? (Never tried to resize an ntfs part. with Ubuntu.) The laptop I am installing this on currently has XP that crashes a lot for unknown reasons.
I have installed HP g6 notebook from live-cd with 10.04 LTS across multiple partitions, only to find that the partition table is not setup correctly. I place the following mount points on separate partitions:
I have a very old laptop its Pentium II with 64 mb ram and 5gb HD . I want to put Debian 5 on it. The problem is that it does not has a Ethernet card so I can not go online with it. It has one USB port though .I want download .deb files from (URL... ) and using my other PC and put them on usb stick and copy to that laptop and dpkg -i .
the problem is that I am a new user so I am confused how to do that as can mishandle depencies .For example if you were to manually install VLC in that laptop how would you that.
