I think I found a bug with the maverick installer. [URL]. The installer is incorrectly reading my partition table I'm afraid it might overwrite data. /dev/sda3 is the target for the install.
/dev/sda1 = 200M = Windows system partition
/dev/sda2 = 239G = Windows install
/dev/sda3 = 50G = Where I want to install Linux
/dev/sda4 = 45G = NTFS storage
At first I had /dev/sda3 as a RAW type. In fact the only way I could create ext4 is via mkfs. I did unmount them before proceeding - mounted just as a reference in the screenshot. fdisk reads the same thing. Fresh install from LiveCD. I only have Wipe entire disk or Advanced in the installer. I don't have the "Install along side another OS" option.
I was reading another thread about someone with a bad partition table and I decided to join this forum. I'm not going to take any drastic actions with the partition (/dev/sda3) in question. I am going to wait for instructions on what to do first. I am not very good with Linux and need some hand holding. System: DELL 4550 Dual-Booted with XP and Ubuntu. Works OK, just no swap. Well, here's what I did: I deleted a partition for Windows XP Pro because it was a trial, and it ran out. I then decided to slide the swap partition for the Ubuntu Linux that I dual-boot into over. (If this was successful, I was going to try expanding the root partition to take up the unused space.) I used Gparted on a CD to do this, as I figured it was safe to do.
I now cannot mount the swap space at bootup (and have to go into a backup version of the OS), although I can use Gparted in Linux to execute the "swapon" command, and it appears that it worked because I now see "swapoff" as an option on the context menu. (I actually don't even need a swap partition, except to hibernate.) If I highlight the swap partition and click on "Drive" on Gparted's menu bar and select "Create Partition Table", it will erase all data on /dev/sda, so how do I fix the bad partition table non-destructively?
I upgraded Windows to 7 from Vista. My Acer laptop had a recovery partition with Vista on it. I don't know, what I was thinking, after the update I deleted the recovery partition. Then got in to problem that Partition Table is deleted. Recovered the partition and partition table with LiveUSB and gpart.
So laptop was working again in about 30mins. Now I see the following issue. Laptop boots and works fine both in Ubuntu (default OS) and Win7. In Disk Utility the partitions are shown as in attachment. In Gparted the disk is not recognized as partition table is not recognized (so I guess) Output of fdisk is here for ref;

While installing Ubuntu I have created 50MB boot partition and was sure is enogugh, but now with growing initrd and kernel size, an autoupdates which were always killed by no sufficient disk space I decided to increase its size. I had following partitions - in disk order:
sda1,primary bootable NTFS, 57GB
sda4, primary ext2, /boot, 47MB
extended sda2{
sda6, ext3, /(root), 43GB
8MB gap

Is the problem still in bad begining of the partition saved or data are already broken ? If the first is there any mount option to really not touch filesystem ? Because I've read even if we mount readonly there are some options saved to disk (as last mount time etc) and I'm aware it could destroy entrie filesystem.
Has the ext3 some partition header as NTFS do? Or is there a way to locate real start of partition? because testdisk and gdisk shows only this one starting sector for sda6. When I moved the sda6 partition there was space between begin of extended partition and begin of sda6, now there is no space, so that's the main reason of suspecting partition begining is in fact over 100MB further.Current partition schema in attached PNG. Also the swap partition was deleted, I don't know when, now there is 4GB hole.
This machine has UBUNTU & wINDOWS XP. I'm currently logged into UBUNTU. I was just checking the features of GParted and accidentally clicked Device > Create Partition Table. A default MS-DOS partition table is created. Now if I re-start the Gparted there is nothing. Its showing entire disk as UNALLOCATED space.
Lucky thing is All the drives (C:, D:, E:) are currently mounted and I'm in UBUNTU. I guess its possible to re-create the partition table using current status. how to do this. This is a lab computer. If its not recoverable. I'm completely screwed!
GParted tells me my hard drive is not partitioned and has an unrecognised partition table, but I know it has because i'm using it now to write this on here, and fdisk shows the following:

The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/sda (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made until you reboot. You should reboot your computer before doing anything with /dev/sda. I can start fedora 12 x64 amd whitout any problem. My partition layout on a single disk (80 gb sata maxtor) for the system is:

When I try to mount one of the extra disks (samsung spinpoint 1 tb, I have 4) I get to next error:

In gparted, when I select just a flag option, and deselect, press ok, the disk is forced to be reread by the program. After that I can also mount it. When I use any of the programs linked in this post, I am able to mount the disks whitout any problem. Except after a reboot, I get the same problem. SO whit each reboot, or poweroff, I need to do a re-read of the disks. The system is fedora 12 x64 for amd, installed from a live cd, the rest whit yums groupinstall, the latest kernel.
how to upgrade my ubuntu 9.10 system. I would like to do a clean install of lucid, but I have way too many files. I have a big hard drive, so space was not a problem, and things got out of hand ^^ One thing you should know is that I have plenty of room for my files even if the drive was half it's size, so my idea is possible space-wise. (And I am prepared if this fails. I have backed up my stuff, but would like if it I didn't have to rely on that)
What I want to do is make a blank partition with gparted and install lucid on it. Then I want to keep it a dual boot just to make sure my hardware is working ok, then move my home folder to the new partition, make the lucid partition take the whole hard drive, and delete karmic. I do not want to upgrade because I messed up my install a lot while learning linux, so I really need to start over.
Want to repartition/resize existing 1/2 full 60MB sda2 currently containing NTFS. The "Allocate drive space" does not seem to have a resize option (the 10.04 docs claim there was a resize option here). When I run 10.10 gparted in live mode gparted crashes for unknown reason before it even finishes scanning the disk. Am I missing something here? (Never tried to resize an ntfs part. with Ubuntu.) The laptop I am installing this on currently has XP that crashes a lot for unknown reasons.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUsing ubuntu minimal install 9.10 for a htpc. My boot drive is a 2Gb disk on module. When using advanced install I am eventually given the option to format the drive and ultimately the option to pick what sort of partition table type. I am not sure what to pick; it appears to have msdos as a default. Here are my options:
aix
amiga
bsd
dvh
gpt
mac
msdos (default?)
pc98
sun
loop
Some appear to be obviously bad choices; but I am not sure. Any ideas on which would be a better pick for me? I have already used msdos and it seems to work fine.
Is there a difference between using GPT partition table when formating hard drives and MS-DOS partition table? What are the advantages/disadvantages of using either?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was installing opensuse 11.2 in parallel with windows xp.but during installation suddenly power has gone and after that opensuse is giving me the error message corrupt partition.i am also not able to login in xp. so I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
i have 2 window partition(1 for windows and 1 for data).i do,nt want to format 2,nd partition.
How can I installed windows?My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.
I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.
When I installed Slackware, I deselected a few software sets like KDE and TCL, but now I would like to install KDE (btw, what is TCL for? Is it something important that I should have installed, or is it something like "if you don't know, you don't need it"?). What would be the best way to install the KDE software set and even have a menu to deselect a few packages I know I won't use?produces a list of kde packages (including the kde language packages), but I don't know if that's everything in the kde set. It seems like it's not, since it's transcending the software set boundaries to provide options for the internationalization packages, too.

I have a new 1.5tb internal drive I want to partition as NTFS (because Windoze machines need to see/use it) and in gparted, when I go to partition -> new, it says it could not add this operation to the list a partition cannot have a length of -1 sectors. I recall having this issue on my 2tb external drive and I ended up creating the NTFS parition on a Windoze machine and then bringing it to the Linux box but since this is an internal drive, that's not an option. I took all the defaults in the "Create new partition" screen.

Now grub shows 2 linuxes on machine, which is a pain, since I cannot boot this other install on external from grub.
I am trying to delete and create that partion with gparted. But won't delete it, even after unmounting it.
I need one help in Fedora 10. I've tried searching all over google and I've not found anything relevant to my problem. I installed Fedora 10 choosing only the basic set of packges. i.e. I uncheck 'Office and Prod' and 'Software Dev' during installation. I wanted to install the base packages and then wanted to install what I need later on. Now that everything is stable and working fine, I want to install the software dev and office package but I dont know how to do this. I am not finding any option to install packages from the DVD or such. Is there any config script that will install all the packages from those two sets. I dont want to install package one by one.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have never seen this before wit any previous versions of ubuntu - wondering if anyone else has seen it or can explain it. The break down of the partition table is being viewed with Ranish Partition v2.43 It's old program, but it has been really handy.
What is happening is: Prior to the install of ubuntu on the 3rd Primary partition, you'll see that the 4th partition (which has a couple of logical partitions in it) starts at: (14,380 - 0 - 1) ===> Cylinder - Head - Sector After the installation of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS it shows a Non-conventional start point of: (14,380 - 0 - 62) =====> Cylinder - Head - Sector. An unused is left between the 3rd and 4th Primary partition.
This is not a big deal - just unusual (IMO) With the same partition layout (pre install) It doesn't matter if I install ubuntu on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd primary partition. The 4th one ALWAYS gets changed this way.
I have a machine running Ubuntu Server 9.10 installed on an 80GB RAID1 disk. The system has two arrays (one data, the other backup), each of the same size in RAID6 with ext4 fs, connected to separate 3ware 9690 controller cards. I had to increase the size of the arrays from 8TB to 12TB. No problems - added the drives, migrated the new disks into the array, rebooted the server, and everything is visible. I unmounted the drives and then attempted to grow the partition (it's a single partition), starting with the backup array, using gparted. It sees the unallocated space but when I try to grow the partition into the unallocated space it fails. Here's the gparted error details:

I have on sda1 Windows 7 installed. On sda2 I have 3 sub partitions (extended partition) with Ubuntu 10.04 and a swap space and one partition for /usr/local. Now I tried to move space from sda2 to sda1 using gparted. It's not possible. I deallocated space from sda2 which works. But I cannot merge it with sda2. Is that, because sda2 is an extended partition? Is there a work around without killing all partitions and lose my complete data?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've installed Windows 7 + XP + Ubuntu 10.10 and Mac Os X on my PC. The problem is that XP wont boot. I've tried a lot of fixes for the last 2 days but still nothing. So I've come to conclusion that it might be probably due to its partition (dev/sda being inside of another Extended partition (dev/sda3) as you guys can see on the attachment. If so, how can I move it out of the extended partition.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo, my GParted (Ubuntu) won't create an NTFS partition (the option is greyed out). I'm trying to create an NTFS partition to allow for a Windows 7/Ubuntu dual-boot. Everywhere I check, they suggest either creating the NTFS partition in GParted BEFORE installing Windows OR leaving it "unallocated" with the Linux partition after it.
I have tried both now, with two results:
1) GParted can't create an NTFS partition within Ubuntu 9.10.
2) On the other hand, the Windows 7 Installer says that Windows can not create a partition or find a partition when I attempt to select the "unallocated" portion.
I have searched and didnt find a situation like mine so i thought id ask. i have a dual boot setup on my hp pavillion windows vista /dev/sda1 and backtrack linux 3,while trying to install backtrack 4 (which is ubuntu based) i deleted the former partitons for bt3. im not quite sure what i clicked but using the ubiquity installer it deleted my partition table so now my entire drive is listed as unallocated space. i have some very important files on my windows partition other wise i would just format and start over. how can i restore the partition table and boot to windows to atleast grab the important stuff. the drive hasnt been formatted so the info is still there i just cant get to it anyone have any ideas?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had a problem whilst trying to rewrite the MBR on a NTFS-only harddisk which has one partition.
I'm wondering if I can do anything to fix the problem from my ubuntu CD which gives me access to a shell - using the trial/demo mode.
The problem is that I can't boot into WinXP since using the XP boot cd to go into recovery mode and typing in 'fixmbr DeviceHarddisk0Partition1'.
All I get is the message code...
Thought perhaps there may be a way to restore the missing signature or something, from ubuntu.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 to an Asus EeePC 1000H (160GB HDD). (I know it will be slow because of Mutter/i945). The usb stick boots just fine but when it comes to the partition part it goes wrong.
I have 3 partitions:Windows 7 (50GB)
This will be Ubuntu Netbook (50GB)
DATA (60GB)
But the partition manager just shows 160GB of unallocated space. I have tried to reboot and create the partitions with other software (even with GParted LiveCD) but the result is the same.
I threw F12 KDE on my spare rig and wanted to throw Ubuntu on it as dual boot so I can play around with different things in each flavor. I installed F12 across the entire drive and later decided I wanted to try Ubuntu with it dual boot. I booted to Ubuntu's LiveCD and fired up GParted - but GParted can't resize the partition. It just gives me a 200mb EXT4 partition and "lvm2".
View 2 Replies View RelatedPurpose: Python, PHP, WebKit (hopefully), and pyqt development. There is Wubi for Ubuntu, which I am using right now. But Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't work well with my system. There is a Wubi like installer for Puppy Linux. There is Debian Win32 installer, but I think that does touch the partition table. My last option is to simply grab Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and hope it works. Would that be a viable solution considering my needs?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo far I've been dual-booting Vista and Intrepid, and I decided I'd shrink down the Linux partition a bit, expand the Windows partition and reinstall Ubuntu fresh from a Live CD. I booted up from a Live CD, mounted the old Linux filesystem to check that I hadn't missed any documents to back up before I wiped the partition, and then cued up the relevant operations in GParted.
The key mistake I made was not to unmount the old Linux partition first, which led GParted to bug out and, apparently, stop my Windows partition from working. GParted no longer recognises the partition as NTFS - it tells me it's an unknown filesystem, and refuses to move or resize it.
sudo fdisk -l recognises the partition as HPFS/NTFS. Running chkdsk from a Vista recovery disk has been, so far, unsuccessful. What else can I do to either make the partition bootable again, or at least access it from Linux so I can pull my files off?
