Ubuntu :: Unable To Install GParted?

Jan 15, 2010

I just installed a dual boot of ubuntu with XP on my laptop. I'm planning on deleting XP altogether and keeping ubuntu. Now, as I understand the best way to do this is to go to GParted, delete the ntfs partition, and format it to ext3. Does this sound right? Now the problem is I can't seem to get GParted installed. I go to the terminal window and type sudo apt-get install gparted but it doesn't work. I get the following messege.

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information.. Done
E: Couldn't find package gparte

General :: Unable To Download GParted?

Running latest Ubuntu; dual boot with Vista - Ubuntu is the default. Acer laptop, twin core 2500 CPU, 3 gig ram, 500gb HD. It came with that HDD partitioned into 2 x 250gb (approx) Running Vista.

I would like to re-install to eliminate all my mistakes. I would also like to give Linux a major size partition. But unable to download G Parted (times out after running happily for 20 or so mgb - it just stops. Tried at least 3 times - twice under Ubuntu and once via Vista.

General :: Partition Gparted Fdisk / When Reduced The Size Of Some Linux Partitions Using Gparted?

Sep 18, 2009

I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.

The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.

When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.

When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.

When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda5

Disk /dev/sda5: 28.5 GB, 28566397440 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3473 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -u /dev/sda5

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:

1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.

Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Install Centos 5.5 X86_64 On Vmware Server 2.0.2?

Nov 6, 2010

I have an i5 Thinkpad running Windows 7 64-bit. VT is enabled in the BIOS. I have installed vmware server v 2.0.2 but am unable to install Centos 5.5 x86_64 as a guest OS. The steps that I followed are as follows:1. Created a new VM, specifying RHEL 5 64-bit as the intended guest OS (per vmware documentation - Centos is not available as a selection2. Downloaded all 8 iso files for Centos v5.5 64-bit3. Modified the CD/DVD drive to 'connect at power' and use an iso with the path pointing to the x86_64 iso 1 of 8When I power up the VM, the console window displays 'ISOLINUX 3.11 2005-09-02 Copyright (C) 1994-2005 H. Peter Anvin' and nothing else. The installation splash screen never appears. As a test, I downloaded the first of 7 iso files for the 32-bit version of Centos 5.5 and pointed the CD/DVD drive to that iso. In that case, the installation starts as expected. I would really like to get the 64-bit version installed and running.

Fedora :: Unable To Re Read Sda When Gparted

Jan 21, 2010

I have the following problem on fedora 12, x64 amd; I have installed fedora 12 from a live cd, whit custum partition tables (no lvm or somting like that). my sceam is (on a single 80 gb maxtor sata disk only 1 system, clean install):

/
/home
swap

Notitng more (not needed also). The installation was successfully. No problems on the install part. ALs no problems on the ugprade part. I installed the rest using yum groupinstall. When i want to add the extra 4 disks (all samsung 1 tb spinpoint sata) that i have for my backupdata, non of the partiotionprograms can recognise. If i do; moun /dev/sdb1/ /media/sdb1, it says that i need to add the file system. well, by some sort of misstake, i could find a workaround for this. When start gparted, select on of the samsung disks, select any of the flags in gpart, remove the flag and give it a ok, gpart can read the amount of data thats used. After that i ame able to mount whit a simple mount /dev/sbd1 /media/sdb1 command. When i use this command: hdparm -z /dev/sdb1, i can mount the disk afterwards, whitout problems. Of course, i need to add them als to my /etc/fstab file, so they automount each time at boot.........

OpenSUSE :: Gparted Is Unable To Create Anything More Than An Hfs Filesystem

Sep 12, 2009

I'm running a modified version of OpenSUSE 11.1 from the susestudio builder. I've run across a weird issue whereby gparted is unable to create anything more than an hfs filesystem.

It seems that the package libparted simply doesn't exist in any of the repositories I'm using. I am figuring this would affect what gparted is able to do, although I'm unsure since the program itself runs fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Resize Partition With Gparted On Live CD?

Feb 17, 2011

I recently got new hard drives for more space and copied all my old drives onto this one (everything mirrored, no problems)The thing is, when I first setup my Ubuntu, I only allotted like 20GB because of space. Now that I have new hard drives, I wanted to give it more space, roughly double it to 50gb.The problem is, I am unable to resize it.I have booted into the Ubuntu Live CD, and started Gparted. I see all my stuff there, including the unallocated space next to my ubuntu partition (I left it so i could fill it when I expanded the partition)

The problem is, I am unable to make it larger. I right click, click on resize/move, but when I do, it just shows that I'm at my maximum size for that partition, I can only shrink it.so my question is, how in the world can I extend that partition into the unallocated space?I've tried formatting the unallocated space to ext3 to try and merge it, no success.I tried moving my ubuntu partition all the way to the right (end of the disk) so maybe I could extend it to the left, nothing

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Access/format The SSD Correctly (using Gparted)

Feb 27, 2011

So I currently have an issue with the 10.10 (64-bit) installer in that it does not recognized the Crucial SSD drive I have installed on my box correctly (long story and ultimately a separate topic but if anyone is interested). Initially I thought it was an issue with the hardware and RMA'd the drive however now realize that the likely culprit is the Ubuntu installer itself.

In order to test the rest of the hardware while waiting for the RMA'd drive I installed Ubuntu on a separate partition on the box and thus have a working secondary partition that I can boot from. From within Ubuntu it seems I am able to access/format the SSD correctly (using gparted); it seems that it is only the installer that cannot handle the drive...

Is there a way that I can install Ubuntu on a second partition from within Ubuntu itself?

Fedora :: Gparted - Kernel Unable To Reread Partition Table On Disks

Jan 22, 2010

When I start gparted, to see if I can add extra harddisk where all my data is, I get the next error:

Code:
[root# gparted
libparted : 1.9.0

The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/sda (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made until you reboot. You should reboot your computer before doing anything with /dev/sda. I can start fedora 12 x64 amd whitout any problem. My partition layout on a single disk (80 gb sata maxtor) for the system is:
Code:
/
/home
swap

When I try to mount one of the extra disks (samsung spinpoint 1 tb, I have 4) I get to next error:
Code:
root# mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

If I add the option with the filesystem I get:
Code:
root# mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1
mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist

In gparted, when I select just a flag option, and deselect, press ok, the disk is forced to be reread by the program. After that I can also mount it. When I use any of the programs linked in this post, I am able to mount the disks whitout any problem. Except after a reboot, I get the same problem. SO whit each reboot, or poweroff, I need to do a re-read of the disks. The system is fedora 12 x64 for amd, installed from a live cd, the rest whit yums groupinstall, the latest kernel.

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Install The 5.3

Jul 9, 2009

I tried to install centos 5.3 on my dell pc. I downloaded the large 3.69 gb dvd iso. file from 5 seperate mirror sites and burned the disk images. When I boot it did the disk checks and they have been all good. The problem I'm having is it starts the boot process lets me get to the partition settings and then goes to formating the harddrive then when it starts the install part it goes for a few minutes then gives me a error that it cant find a file (not allways the same file) and says the install sorce is missing a file or is corrupted. This is why I have spent a few days downloading from different mirror sites to see if that was the issue, they all cant be bad.

When I first attempted the install it installed grub for multi boots I dont think this has any problem with finding the files but who knows. I looked up on how to uninstall grub and you can not from the info on there site. The box is a dell pent 4 with one gig ram, two ide hard drives and it ran windows xp. I intalled fedora on the box and it ran fine w/ no install errors I just need to try and set up a server so I can install webgui's cms webhosting wre software. In there forums they said centos 5 is the best os for what I want to do.

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Install 5.7

Sep 21, 2011

I have a very urgent problem that is nailing me down for days now: I was running CentOS 5.7 x86_64 very successful in a VM here. Now i wanted to install it on a native system here. So i burned the 8 ISOs to 8 CDs.

When i started the installation however, it is booting correct, (continue in GUI mode) and then finally asking me for installation language/keyboard layout, then it comes up with "CD Not Found" - "The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry" - what i did, several times, without success.

Next try: The DVD image. So i installed a torrent client, downloaded both ISOs, burned them several hours later -> same result. after going through the first steps (selecting install language and keyboard layout): "CD Not Found" - "The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry" - what i did, several times, without success.

So, last try: The NetInstall image. Downloaded the ISO, burned it, and yah! Finally, i can install CentOS. It took almost 6 hours to get through the installation. I got one error (Can't download 'something i don't remember'), i said retry, and it continued. So but now it hangs after startup. Mouse cursor is visible, blue nice 'wait' anim is playing, that's it.

I'd really want to reinstall it, and i don't trust the net install (i probably screwed up something else) - so how can i fix this damn CD drive issue? is the drive (oem something standard IDE thing) not supported or what?

One of the things I'm going to test requires me to have wine installed on the CentOS box. I found that to install wine I need to use the command "yum install wine". When doing this nothing really happens. I get the following output on the screen:

I've already issued the "yum upgrade" command but my problem still remains.

Does anybody know of this issue or is there anybody who can help me with this?

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Do Fresh Install 5.4

May 8, 2010

I cannot boot from the OS dvd. It says looking for boot info on CDDVD then boots right into an older version of windows that happens to be on the hdd. If I unplug the hard drive I can get into the CentOS installer but this is useless because the hdd isn't viewable as a place to install the new OS. I don't know if I need to format the drive before hand so that Cent has a clean slate or if there is a problem with the DVD itself. The later I dont believe so based on the working of the installer while hdd unplugged. The DVD drive is on its own ribbon and both hdd and dvd drive or set to primary master in DOS.

Aside: I have recenlty moved to centOS formally using ubuntu and messing around with fedora on another computer. I am using cent based on work with school, they recommended cent for project with professor.
