There is one little thing annoying me in man pages. When I search for text using '/' command the line where the text is found is positioned at the top of the screen. I find it inconvenient because when I search for text I want to see it in the context which also includes the a couple of lines before the found text.Is there a way to tell the man pager not to scroll the screen all the way to the top during search?

Just one question,I can not use "?abc" to search abc in man page.(At the bottom of man page there is a "more") But I can do that if I install from a installtion CD1 with default opition. I have written a script as follows which is taking lot of time in executing/searching only 3500 records taken as input from one file in log file of 12 GB Approximately. Working of script is read the csv file as an input having 2 arguments which are transaction_id,mobile_number and search the log file having these two strings with one more static string that is "CustomCDRInterceptor",then format the searched data in prescribed format.

I'm using mplayer and libcaca on Gentoo. My framebuffer (uvesafb) is running at 1920x1200 (I don't know how many characters that is) and mplayer has problems filling up the screen, so video and audio lose synchronization.

Basically, I am receiving some emails that look lovely in Thunderbird but not in Evolution because the HTML rendering of Evolution isn't as advanced.Here is a screenshot of the difference: how to improve the HTML rendering of Evolution? e.g. a plugin, tip, code patch, etc. The closest I've got is to right-click the email, "Save As...", save as a html file, then open in Firefox. Not exactly streamline!What emails can't it display well? When Evolution fails to use the colours, I find it very hard to read the raw diff.

i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.
On FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?

I have a problem printing to my HP printer.
What is my problem? I have a page (one page - text an graphic) to print. When I sent it to my printer it prints OK. When I sent it agian, the output is totally garbled. When I sent it again (a third time) it is OK. Sent it again (4th time) it is garbled. Sent it again ... you get the picture ;-). Alternating good and bad pages.
What is my setup? I run Fedora 14 with Cups 1.4.6. The printer is a HP Deskjet 940C. It is connected to a linksys wireless print server. It is configured in CUPS to use ipp printing. The driver I use in Cups is 'CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.6 Simplified (color, 2-sided printing)'.

But when I visit http:/localhost ，it shows up the list of files in <var/www/html> as if a ftp server browsed in web page. I applied for DDNS account & input it into router correctly . I set virtual host in server to redirect any access from port 80 to 192.168.1.2:80 in LAN . Just for in case , I also download and running the DDNS software & installed it on PC 192.168.1.2 in LAN . My DDNS provider is oray.cn . It's a Chinese server provider . I don't think there is anything wrong with oray.cn . But if you need its information just visit oray.cn (Google can translate it for you). So I want to know did I miss something to set up a web server in this kind of situation

I am a pretty experienced linux (or for you hardcore GNU fans GNU/Linux) user having used it for almost 4 years and I just built my Arch system but have found that alot of the functionality that I've come to love about ubuntu isn't in the default Gnome package but that Ubuntu's Gnome is heavily modified so I want to switch back but do to my lack of modern hardware I can't run Ubuntu as smoothly as I want.
Below is my current hardware.

I am also a Developer so I know I can compile the Kernel my self and remove some not needed junk and optimize it. But I was wondering are there some Highly intensive processes that don't really need to be running? The only thing I would be using Ubuntu for is Web Browsing, Coding, Gimp, Text Processing and probably Music; thats really all I need I don't do much else besides that.

Basically all I'm trying to do is lighten Ubuntu and Gnome without putting 3 days worth of work into it.
I am running a ubuntu desktop machine as a server and use VNC from my windows machine to login via a LAN to the ubuntu machine. The login session is very sluggish and frustrating. I installed gnome-rdp to see if it would be better but I don't know how it works or what to do and if there is something else I can do to improve the performance. I have 3 gig of ram and the server is a dual celeron machine
