View 5 Repliesi recently got a french msi wind U100x running on linux suse enterprise 10 sp1. (i am french and wanted a light netbook with french keyboard)i am totally new to linux and i believe that msi wind is not helping.because i am more used to english for settings, i set the main language to english, but it seems that it automatically reconfigures my keyboard mapping to english as well, so that azerty becomes qwerty.i reset it back to french, so now my keyboard is french, but so is the system.is there a way to differentiate keyboard from main user setting language?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a question about connections with an ubuntu server. Is there a way to know if the terminal computer (which is connected to my linux server) is using WinSCP to connect (on a Windows platform) or a linux system? It seems they are using the same port (22) and I think the exact same protocol (SSH / SFTP), is there a way to differentiate between the two though? And going farther there, is it possible to limit the connections only to linux terminal computers and reject requests coming from Windows computers?

I also need to know this for a CentOS 5 box.
constructing a protocol where in it involves sending and receiving different files, so sending data over consists of file name, size of the file and content of the file, so while receiving can i use functions like strchr() to differentiate these fields for sockets? so to allocate memory for file to save i need to have its size.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI haven't worked with linux before, I am a network administrator, mostly working with cisco routers and windows 2003 server configured with ISA, I want to shift to linux, since its a free OS, offers more than windows 2003 server, and I have the time and resources to test it at my work place, I want to give it a try. Now ... this is what I want:
I want to use Linux OS (server or desktop editions) as Internet Gateway, I have less than 50 hosts (internet users) on my network, and I simply want to know what is the most convenient linuxs distro for me to work with as a beginner to install, configure and administrating a linux OS(working as an Internet Gateway).
Its a simple network, 50 users connected to a switch, the switch to a server (where I will run the linux OS), the server to a cisco router, the router to the internet line. (Any tips on what do I need to be able to configure firewall rules and user activity monitoring like I am used to do with ISA on windows server 2003).
I upgraded from 8.04 to 9.04, or something like that. I had the VNC server started, the one from synaptic manager, but after I completed the upgrade, did reboot to the server, and now when I connect (from my windows machine) with the VNC Viewer, and after I login with the password, I can ONLY view the linux, and I can't drag items, windows, etc. I can't do anything. One friend of mine had THE SAME problem, and I'm sure it's a bug. I have removed the VNC server from synaptic package manager, reinstalled it, and I got the same problem. I have downloaded the 9.04 Ubuntu linux, installed it on a temporary desktop PC, and it had THE SAME problem. Now (after 2 months) I have downloaded again the 9.04 version, from exact place, and the VNC server is working fine.
Now, my question is, how do I fix this problem on my current Ubuntu 9.04 linux server ? 'Cause if I reinstall the VNC server from synaptic manager, it will not change at all, I will still have this problem. Ofc, on the remote desktop preferences, it is selected "Allow other users to control your desktop". I dezactivated it, activated it again, still can't control the desktop, I can only view it.
Or, is there any other remote desktop program tht I can install to control my X on the linux server from my windows machine ? I don't need X to configure my server, but I need X 'cause I have YM and programs with GUI, torrents, etc.
As i know, windows server 2008 can be installed on desktop.
Linux also can?
Got any advantage?
I've done the following:
But when I connect via, VNC I get a minimalist screen and console.
I ran "startx" and got this:
I need to get a real desktop environment running on this box.
Centos 5.5.
First problem:
apt-get --purge remove ubuntu-desktop
Reading package lists...
Building dependency tree...
Reading state information...
Package ubuntu-desktop is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I have installed Ubuntu desktop on Ubuntu Server to get Boinc manager running. Now I want to remove Ubuntu-desktop.
Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.
I'm curious, I believe that one of the ways that OSX make the GUI experience of *nix more 'snappy' was to ditch X and run the window manager more directly on the hardware.
If I'm looking to run Linux on a desktop, and have no interest in sending Windows to other machines on the network, can I run KDE or Gnome with no 'X' to eliminate that ever-so-slight lag with the window manager experience.
I guess basically what I'm asking is is there an equivalent of quartz for Linux?
is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.
And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy present system consists of 4 computers all running Ubuntu (just upgraded to 10.04) and all have a Virtual windows installations to run applications for which there are no Linux substitutes. The "server" is a NAS that is merely a file repository. I want to replace the NAS with a new computer that acts as both a server and a local workstation. It would act as a repository for common files and would run a mail, calendar, contacts server for the LAN (no outside connections). What are the pros and cons of installing the server version of Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) then adding the appropriate desktop versus installing the desktop and adding some server functions?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have both windows (xp and win7) and mac (osx snow leopard) running on my network. I'd like to find a unified system that I could use as a file server. Mainly, I'd like to have it hold music and movies, maybe run some automated backups from a win 7 desktop. I'd also like it to be a print server. I'd like to run the most simple and lightest weight OS for the server os. However, I don't think I have the basic linux knowledge to run Ubuntu Server as it is terminal based. I have installed it on my machine but I feel like im running in circles. I have it installed and can SSH in with my laptop no problem. I feel like I may be better off installing Ubuntu Desktop and removing what I dont need. at htis time the server has only a 40gig hdd in it, i also have a 500gb hdd i'd be using for the files.
