My centos server was startup to command line mode (console), and I install desktop on that server. after that I set up vncserver from putty, and connect to it using vncviewer, but I can not get into the desktop environment in installed but xwindow desktop instead, and if I try to "startx" in the vncviewer, error occurs, what's wrong ?
View 1 RepliesI upgraded from 8.04 to 9.04, or something like that. I had the VNC server started, the one from synaptic manager, but after I completed the upgrade, did reboot to the server, and now when I connect (from my windows machine) with the VNC Viewer, and after I login with the password, I can ONLY view the linux, and I can't drag items, windows, etc. I can't do anything. One friend of mine had THE SAME problem, and I'm sure it's a bug. I have removed the VNC server from synaptic package manager, reinstalled it, and I got the same problem. I have downloaded the 9.04 Ubuntu linux, installed it on a temporary desktop PC, and it had THE SAME problem. Now (after 2 months) I have downloaded again the 9.04 version, from exact place, and the VNC server is working fine.
Now, my question is, how do I fix this problem on my current Ubuntu 9.04 linux server ? 'Cause if I reinstall the VNC server from synaptic manager, it will not change at all, I will still have this problem. Ofc, on the remote desktop preferences, it is selected "Allow other users to control your desktop". I dezactivated it, activated it again, still can't control the desktop, I can only view it.
Or, is there any other remote desktop program tht I can install to control my X on the linux server from my windows machine ? I don't need X to configure my server, but I need X 'cause I have YM and programs with GUI, torrents, etc.

I set up the remote desktop on ubuntu and I connect to my current ubuntu's desktop with the VNC viewer. It is working, I see the mouse cursor, but I cannot see the files while I'm dragging them.
Another friend of mine has THE SAME problem.
I have installed and configurated NX server, and the problem is the same.
If I connect with the nx client, using a different session, I can control my desktop, I can drag windows and files, but if I'm using the shadow option from the nx client program, then I cannot drag windows and files.
I'm no expert on DHCP. My problem is that i have a CentOS 5.5 server on which i want to install a DHCP server. I have two NICs where eth0 has access to the internet and where eth1 should act as an DHCP server.
I have installed dhcpd and this is how my dhcpd.conf file looks like.

When i start dhcpd on eth1 i get no error messages but when i connect any devices to eth1 they don't get any IP. I cant find anything in any logs about devices trying to get an IP address. I dont have any firewall rules in iptables.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm currently in the last steps of migrating a CentOS mailserver to the x64 version.However, under the old 32 bit version, I was using XRDP to access the Centos box from my Windows boxes.However I can't seem to find the XRDP package in the standard repos so this is prompting me to look at possible alternatives (XRDP was incompatible with my windows 7 box anyway soI had to RDP to another server of ours running 2003 to RDP into the mailserver which was far from ideal).Basically, I'd like to be able to seamlessly access the Centos box with a standard RDP client.
I know VNC Server/Clients would be an option but RDP gives me the freedom of any windows box being able to access the server on the same adress/port without installing software on any windows box I encounter.Are there any viable alternatives to XRDP ?There's no "add-on" to VNC server that could enable it to accept RDP connections ?
I have an old pc currently running ubuntu server 9.10. It was configured during install to connect to the home wifi router by a PCI ethernet card, which worked all well and good. However, at the moment I cannot connect to the router (I have moved the machine too far from it). I want to connect this machine (desktop) to the server so I can SSH into the box and backup some files. I have a customer who has (currently) three servers running Centos 5.5, one running Windoze 2003 and around thirty or so workstations running XP Pro.
I've just been reading about RedHat's product - RHEVD and was wondering of anyone knows if this product (or anything similar) is aavailable under CentOS.
Basically what we need to be able to do is to virtualize the XP workstations so that the staff can connect via a browser (inside the office or off-site - or for that matter anywhere) and be presented with a standard desktop.
I know I can achieve this using Citrix XenDesktop or VMWare View but I would prefer to use a FOSS solution if one exists. Having said that it has to be robust and well past Beta
