I have slackware 13 ext4 partition. Debian lenny ext3 partition. and a /data ext3 partition Debian contains the grub boot loader i've been using to boot slackware. I'm going to wipe debian and I installed grub to /data with knoppix cd. Grub on debian booted into slackware just fine, but the grub I installed (onto data partition) with knoppix live cd does not find the slackware kernel. I am using the exact same menu.lst. apparently debian grub had ext4 support, but knoppix does not. both are grub .97. Is there a way to add ext4 support?
We are currently running Redhat 5.4 64Bit (Build 2.6.18-164.e15) however having issues with tar files that are greater than 2TB in size.
We have been told that upgrading the kernel to support the ext4 file system (supported in version 5.5?) and mounting the current 10TB nas share as an ext 4 file system may solve our over 2TB file size issues. Are their limitations within the ext3 file system that cause issues to files greater than 2TB and if this is the case Do we have to update the kernel (complete rebuild), or can we load a package on the redhat box to support the ext 4 file system Where do we get the upgrade/package. I have logged onto the redhat site and can not find kernel updates but can find the full installation packages. We are not connected directly to the internet and do not have access to the update repository
I got a problem booting ubuntu 10.4 RC but i solved it by replacing root partirion uuid in grub boot menu then I disapled totally uuid passing to linux from /etc/default/grub . but something else i noticed why grub choosed insmod=ext2 why not ext4 specially I use now ext4 .I tried by editing the grub boot menu replacing "insmod=ext2" by "insmod=ext4" it booted and the three lines error during booting that i used to see them science ubuntu 9.10 totally disappeared . really I dont understand can anybody explane for me.and if what i did was right ,can anybody tell me how to make grub always and permenantly detect ext4 as ext4 not as ext2.
I thought I'll be smart, and installed squeeze on ext4 partitions ( boot-ext2, root-ext4, home-ext4 and swap). With my Lenny (ext3), I use partimage to backup the / partition, and rsync to backup my /home files. Now, I found out that partimage does not work with ext4. Are there other GNU packages I can use to backup my / partition?
I recently bought a new HDD for my server and I now need to create two differently sized ext4 partitions. I tried GNU parted, but it can't create ext4 partitions so I did some googling but couldn't find any CLI partition managers with ext4 support

I have a relatively new laptop that is too dumb to recognize a usb flash drive in the bios. So I cannot boot from it by the bios. I have a Debian install on that laptop with grub 2. So I figure, grub 2 should be powerful enough to have it's own drivers for usb storage so it can directly access the usb drive without having to get help from the bios. How is this done?
How can I integrate usb support into grub 2? Is there a module I can load? I have an ubuntu on the memorystick, so it has it's own grub bootloader, so I would probably do a chainboot if I am not mistaken. Or does anybody know of a initrd that will give control to another bootloader on a device? Initrd should surely have all support for hardware.
telling me if this behavior of my openSuSE 11.2 installation is normal? I use a 64-Bit openSuSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.x with root partition ext4. After adding and updating from repository kernel:/HEAD/etc to 2.6.34-rc4 I can not boot anymore due to a lack of module ext4. I thought today ext4 is stable and fix built-in in the actual kernel releases, isn't it? The error message at boot time: FATAL: Module ext4 not found. Which is right because in /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/ there is NO 'fs' subfolder. Isn't the kernel:/HEAD/ repository the official update path to get a newer major kernel? (besides openSuSE's Updates for security reasons) Do you know how I can fix it without self-compiling?
I have tried countless things and am at a complete loss. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general, just so everyone knows. Here's my problem: I can run the 10.10 install disc as a Live CD and have perfectly functional internet. However, when I install into a clean ext4 partition, I have zero internet support. I have Googled the heck out of this problem, too.I've tried tinkering with IPv6 settings, I've tried scouring my BIOS for anything relating to "Wake-on-LAN" (It's enabled in Windows 7, by the way, which is what I dual-boot into), and several other network-related ideas I've read online. None have had any effectEDIT: Additional details: ethernet worked like a champ in 10.04, and in 10.10 when I did an upgrade instead of a clean install. I had this same ethernet problem in a clean 11.04 install (which also worked in Live CD form), too, which is why I tried 10.04 to begin with.
I am noticing RHEL 5.4 is in beta. Does anyone know what 5.4's plans are for ext4? Is it still going to be a non-bootable addon? Or, will GRUB now boot off it?

I had 5.4 machine. Upgraded to 5.5 today via yum upgrade. All went fine. Rebooted. Wanted to convert root partition to ext4 (I have three partitions: /boot, / and swap). All of them on software RAID 1 (root is /dev/md2). I did the following for converting

I currently have kubuntu 11.04 on my laptop harddrive that is in an external enclosure. it is on the outside of the machine and connect to the computer via USB.It works fine on my windows machine and I love the fact I could also plug it into my kubuntu machine at home and use it as a regular harddrive too. Although my new job basically wants me to use a mac. Apparently you need something called an efi support on my grub so here are the questions:
Does kubuntu 11.04 have efi support on its grub i.e. can I plug my hard drive with my kubuntu on via USB to a mac and boot from there? If not how could I get one? Also does getting efi support make any difference when I plug it into my kubuntu machine at home? So can I back up my data as I used to?(by simply plugging it in)Could I still plug it into my windows machine as before and work if I get efi support?
p.s. If you have trouble with heavy laptops give external harddrives a go its like carrying an ultra light linux machine (with all your data in it)!
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a new system. The system is not showing correct resolution in the grub menu and the splash screen is black, until I reach the logon screen.Screen resolution, and video rendering after booting is picture-perfect.I presume this is a bug of the sort "VBE does not support 1920x1080 wide screen resolution".Or, maybe I am missing some point.I hope there must be some workaround.
my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

how to convert ext3 to ext4? I'd like to convert partitions which I use for virtual machines (vmware-server and virtualbox). I use Ubuntu 9.10 as vmware-server host and Gentoo as virtualbox host.
I'm currently building a Raid5 Volume Set (HW-Controller, 3 disks). After some diskussion I decided to don't use a partition since I don't see any disadvatages writing the filesystem (ext4) directly onto the device.
Because I plan to expand the volume set with 2 more hard disk drives, respectively the filesystem, to get the complete disk space available I read the ext4 manual. There is an extended Option called max-online-resize with the description:
Well, although I've searched for more details on the internet I can't find any. Primary in which case is it usefull to set this value because later resizing should be possible without to set this value. Maybe it accelerates the resizing process?
Next, I also plan to use the options stride=stride-size and stripe-width=stripe-width. Is it advisable to set these values for the final volume set (Raid5 with 5 drives) or do I have to set it for the first volume set (Raid5 with 3 drives) and then changing these values during the later resize process for the filesystem? (I personally prefer the first method).

I'm dual booting Ubuntu 9.04 and 10.04 on an ASUS P5VD2-MX SE mobo with 3 hard drives, a couple of DVD writers and a multi memory card reader (USB).
The hard drives are:- 1 250Gb SATA MAXTOR STM325082 1 80Gb PATA HITACHI IC35L090AVV207-0 1 80Gb PATA MAXTOR 6Y080P0
9.04 lives on 2 ext3 partitions of the 250G SATA 10.04 on the 2 ext4 partitions of the 80G MAXTOR The HITATCHI has 1 ext4 partition mounted as a common data area for each O/S The 250G drive has GRUB Legacy in the MBR with its files in a small ext3 primary partition chainloading the 2 O/S's, GRUB Legacy for 9.04 and GRUB2 for 10.04. It also contains the common SWAP partition (primary)
When I boot into 9.04 everything works as expected with as far as I can see no unusual disk activity even when the ext4 data partition and the 2 10.04 ext4 partitions are mounted. When 10.04 is booted however, after about 5 minutes (irrespective of whether or not the other partitions are mounted) I see the hard drive activity light come on and stay permanently on. The system monitor shows nothing unusual. dstat doesn't give any clues either. I've tried running iotop but it fails with a missing CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT error.
Is this a known problem with ext4, should I rebuild 10.04 onto ext3 partitions? Are there some special ext4 mount parameters I should use? (I simply copied the fstab lines from 9.04 and just changed ext3 to ext4). I've read that the journaling process(es?) for ext4 by default commonly access the drive(s) every 2-3 secs but that should just cause a flicker surely.

He is a Mac 'biggot' (don't we all have our preferences?) but has been developing plugins for Cinema 4-D so he wanted to be able to span the spectrum.At any rate, we were chatting and he mentioned that he would like to be able to 'see' his Linux (he is using Ubuntu) drive while booted up in his Mac system.
