General :: Finding A Command Line Html Reader?
Dec 17, 2010
Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0 A command line html reader, or a conversion tool from html to text is what I would like to know if any of you guys knows. It has not to do a perfect job. And it would be nice if it is a native unix/linux program.

Is there a way by which I can read RSS feeds from the terminal itself ? Something that would display the titles and a link to follow. Or maybe a software which works from within the terminal.

I need to be able to convert HTML email messages saved as text files (.eml or .msg) to PDF documents, one PDF per email, retaining formatting and images.
Are there any Linux tools that will allow me to do this from the command line (so it can be scripted)?

I've spent a lot of time googling on this one, but could not really find anything that would convert HTML to images. Does anyone know if there are some command line tools that can do this? I need to convert simple HTML documents to images to be attached to Powerpoint presentations. Could firefox gecko be tapped into to do this without a GUI?

I'd like to find a way of
1) capturing an RDF formatted RSS feed as a file on my computer
2) converting the result to HTML using local command line tools
I've sorted 1) with wget? I've discovered xsltproc but I'm going round in circles. The master plan is to import my pinboard bookmarks into a static web site produced on my linux box using a handful of clever bash scripts.

I have a website that has a massive list of royalty free stock photos and I want to download all of them. I have bought a membership for [URL] so I am able to download as much as I want from them for the next month.
Instead of going page by page and manually downloading each set of stock photos manually, I would like to automate this process. Here's my idea:
1. Download the website with the links to hotfile [URL]
2. Use grep to retrieve all the links to [URL]
3. Feed the links I recieve from grep into wget and download the works of them.
The problem I'm getting is when I use grep, It retrieves the entire line of html code where "hotfile.com" is shown. So here is an example of one link I receive in the output:
Quote:
./1776-santa-claus-vector-set.html:<div align="center"><a href="http://hotfile.com/dl/18418176/181a55b/Santa_Claus_Vector_Set.rar.html" target="_blank">HotFile</a></div>
Is there a way to just have the link shown in the output?
PS: I have everything else working, I just need an automated process of getting all the links.

I have huge files, wherein some lines begin with a number. I want to convert that number to a bookmark link
Sample file:
Code:
C.S. Lewis (I think) wrote:
1 If war is ever
2 legal, then peace
3 is sometimes
4 sinful.
Text without numbers toom I need the numbers to be <a name tags where the id is the letter x and the number that is at the beginning of the line:
Code:
C.S. Lewis (I think) wrote:
<a name="x1">1</a> If war is ever
<a name="x2">2</a> legal, then peace
<a name="x3">3</a> is sometimes
<a name="x4">4</a> sinful.
Text without numbers too I'm not sure why I can't get this, but after hours of 3 line long seds and endless while read lines, grepping ^[[:digits:]]s I can't figure it out.

I am learning to do some html, php and css. I read that a normal word processor will not do. Here is what I am suppsed to use... Before you settle on a text editor, make sure it has the following features: Supports syntax highlighting for HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP. you to code and debug faster by visually separating the different elements of the file. For example, such a text editor might highlight PHP code in blue and HTML code in red. Automatic error highlighting for HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP. you catch errors in your programs while you are writing your code before these errors are detected when you run your program in Zen Cart. For example, if you fail to specify a closing tag for your HTML code, the editor uses a red underline to highlight the offending HTML tag.

I was wondering if there is anyone who has some kind of a small script/code (preferably in C/C++) which reads a partition and just displays the type. For example, the script/code would be called partype and should be something like this: partype /dev/sda1, will read sda1 and display for example ext4, because sda1 was formated as ext4.
Note: I'm not a developer so I have no idea how this should be done, plus I would like the script/code to do it by itself the checking, without using fdisk/sfdisk/cfdisk/parted/gparted, because none of this apps work quite well when it comes to the partition type or file system type.

I've got some trouble while trying to install some applications on my linux system. It is said that the files in my /var/www/html/xxx directory, where I put them, is not writeable. The command chmod 777 xxx has been tried to make it work, but the error remains when I opened the applications again.
To be specific, I want to install phpFreeChat on my system, so I put those files in the /var/www/html/freechat directory, cd there and typed chmod 777 data/private, chmod 777 data/public on bash. Here's the result of list -al data:
drwxr-xr-x. 4 root root 4096 Jun 17 15:07 .
drwxr-xr-x. 13 root root 4096 Jun 17 15:22 ..
drwxrwxrwx. 2 root root 4096 Jun 17 15:07 private
drwxrwxrwx. 3 root root 4096 Jun 17 15:07 public
These all seemed all right to me, until I typed http://localhost/freechat in my browser. Here's the result:
phpFreeChat cannot be initialized,
please correct these errors:
/var/www/html/freechat/src/../data/private
is not writeable

I know my way around MS Windows much better, but I just don't feel right trying to program something for Android on a Microsoft operating system. I am interested in Android programming so I followed the instructions on [URL] to install the environment on my computer...
I just installed the JDK, SDK, Eclipse successfully (or I assume):
* When I get to Step 4 where I'm supposed to run 'android' it will not run. I get the error message "android: command not found" (I am definitely in the right directory).
** When I double-click it in nautilus, it opens up in gedit. I can set the permissions in nautilus (through the properties - Allow executing file as a program) and get it to work,
My system:
Intel i7
Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
android-sdk-linux-x86
eclipse 3.6.2

I've got a website set up which has a section which is just a bunch of links on the side. But this section of links is on every page of the website. And when I expand and add more links I don't want to have to go to every page and add the new link. Is there a way that I could put all the links into something on CSS (or anything else) that I could just include one line in the HTML? So that when I add a link I'll only have to edit the one file and and then every page will be updated?
