I am trying to get fedora-ds running on a machine. I can't log onto the console at all. If I use the command line below the log shows multiple instances on the following lines. fedora-idm-console -D 9 -x nologo

I built a 11.04 server system in vmware workstation a few days ago, set it up for something and now I have a strange problem. It boots without problem. I can login via ssh, the services run and everything is OK from the outside. But on the console there's just a fast blinking cursor on the screen, no login or anything to that affect. Just blank and a blinking cursor.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Fedora 13 x86_64, and have been using the nouveau display driver.I have just installed the Nvidia driver using the easyLife application. Having already set up most things as I like, I only set easyLife to install the Truetype fonts and the Nvidia driver.the initial re-start was a bit nasty, the login screen fonts were huge and the desktop font also huge. I did manage to reset the desktop font size via System> Preferences> Appearance>Fonts>Details. The resolution was set somewhere in excess of 300, and I brought that back to 96 which has put the desktop back to normal.The login font size remains very large, and I have followed advice to set the DPI in the monitor section of xorg.conf 'Option "DPI" "96 x 96", but that hasn't had any effect.Does anyone know how to reset the login font to a reasonable size?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up a webserver with apache, mysql and php on a old pentrium 4 computer. When I tried to setup my MySQL password, I created a password with punctuation in it. MySQL didn't want the password and gave some error about BASH. I tried changing my password again but now I constantly get the error that I am unable to login. I tried all the possibilities with the password I entered before but i just can't login to MySQL anymore. I found some help sites on how to reset your password by running MySQL in the safe mode but that didn't work for me. Can anyone help me resetting my password? Next time i'll use a pass without punctuation Every help is much appreciated! BTW, I also tried uninstalling MySQL with yum (yum remove mysql) and it uninstalled, but when I installed it again the password was still there
View 4 Replies View Related my linux system doesn't have X only console login possible. i would like to deny all user to login from any sources, local machine, remote console (putty, winscp) etc. except root.
i've found something about /etc/security/access.conf and i've put:

but still users other then root are able to login (via putty for example).

My problem is this:
I can login as root in to Gnome and ssh but not in the console In fact I can login with anyuser in to Gnome and ssh but not in the console. By the console I'm referring to tty1-tty6. When the login screen is showed I write the user and password but then a message is quickly(I can�t see it) showed and erased and the login screen is showed again I looked the file /etc/security/access.conf but all the entries are marked as comments. I also looked the file /etc/securetty and this is the content:

I even can use "su" with root with no problem. The next entries are written in the /var/log/audit/audit.log file everytime I has this error:

Continued at * so order may be followed.Fairly new to Fedora, I had reset my Monitor setting from the Graphical Interface on the Desktop, (got an out of range error) Was able to SSH in and reset Xorg to correct values, however now the server does not boot to the Graphical Desktop, just has a spinning blue circle on black background. The server has booted and I can get in with SSH, all functions of the server appear to be working correctly, i.e.web, mail, ftp, etc. However it never goes to the Graphical login page as before.*Fedora 8..the perfect server + ISPconfig. On boot when Fedora states press any key I can edit the following line:

After the Upgrade of my Fedora Insatallation (FC 10 => 12) I have some problems with Gnome and the Login via console. The system actually boots fine and all kind of services like Postfix, IMAP, Samba, SSHD, Apache, etc. are avialable normally.
If I try however to work directly on the server I only see the completed Fedora progress icon and not as hoped for, the Login to Gnome. Also the attempt to change to a plain console with ALT-CTRL-F1 fails.
Since actually everything seems to work quite fine, I am somewhat helpless, according to should I look for, to get Gnome and the Console Login working again.
I have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc.
The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.
A few weeks ago, I upgraded one of our machines to the 64-bit server edition of 10.04. All went reasonably well (after some hoops to get it to properly recognize/mount the RAID + LVM partitions), but one of the things that confounded the installation process was login timeouts. From doing some research, I thought I'd gotten it solved by removing the checks for updated packages on login, but I either didn't get it done, or there's something else going on here.The issue is that the machine is headless and is actually a file & application server, but I do need to connect to it via ssh on a regular basis. However, the issue isn't related to SSH, as it also happens when I try and log in through the physical console too.
What happens is that every so often, login attempts will time out for a period of minutes, then they will suddenly start working again, instantly giving me my expected shell. Again, I suspect it is something with the way the motd junk is being generated, but having a server that prevents you from logging in is totally unacceptable. I've no idea how to go about debugging what happens because I don't see anything useful in any of the logs, and I don't have a way to trace the login process from outside. I'd love to hear what the problem actually is and how to prevent this from happening.
I have RDP working fine on my machine, however when I am signed in locally to the machine, I get the "console" session, which is fine, but when I want to RDP from another machine, I am put into a separate session, instead of "taking over" the console session.Is there a way to do this, similar to how RDP works on a windows machine?I have tried running the mstsc /console command, but I still get stuck into a non-console session.

When I select it the shell exits and displays the graphic "exploding" and then it just sits there. Shutdown works fine; just no reset. Any ideas? I've installed from the DVD. I booted the live CD and it resets just fine so I know it's no my hardware
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't what happened but yesterday I was working normally and then I shutdown the computer, today when I opened ubuntu it took me to tyy1 login screen, I entered my username and password then it took me to the normal login screen with the login drums sound and it wrote on my account (logged in) so I clicked it and I entered my password again and then I got to my ubuntu so what went wrong and how to fix it also I noticed that a new terminal in system tools occurred called Kernel (I didn't add it)

i got this problem every time i open the particular web page after i have opened some pages in my server. when i start to log in again in the same site, the problem pops up although this was not so when i first logged in. i was advised by the personnel in the web host to clear the cache in my browser which i did, then, i was able to log in again. however, when i reached the particular page again, the problem on "connection to the server was reset" erupts. i found in a suggestion in the internet to add this code in the php.ini which i also did post_max_size = 48M file_uploads = On upload_max_filesize = 192M
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using rhel 5.3. I am using windows 2003 server 32-bit (the processor is 64 bit. AMD athlon x2). I have installed vmware and installed rhel5.3 64 bit on top of it. Now i am able to login as root from GUI mode (f7 console), but unable to login in text console from f1 to f6. I checked the /etc/securetty. But there was nothing unusual there. I think udev is causing this problem, since google said so. I cant find where the udev.rules file is located that google searches are taking about. How do i enable root login in f1-6 console.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm still kind of a linux newb, so I might just be missing a little bit of knowledge here, but I've been having some real problems getting my machine to connect to my wireless network under Ubuntu 9.04.
Here are my basic specs:
Intel Pentium™ 4 CPU @2.66 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
3 HDDs: 1 40GB Maxtor internal, 1 320GB WD internal, 1 160GB Maxtor USB external.
OSes: Windows XP Home Edition (on Maxtor internal drive) Ubuntu 9.04 (on WD internal drive)
I don't think my video card would make any difference, so I won't list it on here...
Anyway, what happens is I try to connect (I select the network SSID from the pull-down list in the NetworkManager panel menu), and it seems to connect okay to the router, but I can't get out to the net. I can pull up a terminal and ping the router's address, but I get a "Destination Host Unreachable" message. It's as if, to the computer, the router isn't even there on that level, but it can still somehow connect to it.
Now, here's the strange part. If I reset the router from another (Windows) computer on the network (specifically, the one with a wired connection to it), then I can connect just fine and I can get out to the internet.
Even if you don't know specifically, but have some good ideas as to what might work, that's fine too. I hate having to do this every day, as it affects everyone's internet connection. Granted, it's not like I'm in a strict business situation with tons of machines and multiple access points, but there are 3 of us in the house and we all share internet access from the same router (as I'm sure most people do), and I feel kind of guilty having to interrupt everyone's connection, if even only for about 30 seconds just so I can get a net connection under Linux.
Windows connects to the router/internet just fine, btw. No problems there. I'm also using a NetGear WN111 USB wireless adapter, with the Windows drivers under ndiswrapper.
I have inherited a Compaq Armada 1592DMT that has Debian GNU/Linux (tiny) on its hard drive. After bootup there is a dialog box asking for login & password. Two things I have no way of answering. So how do I recover them? I do not have the faintest idea how Debian Linux works, nor how to Bash Grubs, I'm just an old Windows button pusher.

I've happily been using rdesktop to access my MS Vista desktop from Ubuntu (Hardy) for a few months until a couple of days ago when it stopped working. Now if I try connecting I get the following:

I don't believe anything's changed on the client (Ubuntu) side. The Vista box is occasionally connected to a corporate intranet via VPN and it was after such a session that rdesktop stopped working, so perhaps a Windows group policy was modified during the session. I've checked the basics - can ping 10.1.1.2 from Ubuntu, can access port 3389. Have deleted ~/.rdesktop and ~/.tsclient.
Digging around the Vista client I noticed in Control Panel > System Properties > Remote that in the Remote Desktop sub-panel the Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication setting is enabled and that the other two are greyed out. Now, I don't know whether this setting has been changed but I suspect that it might be the problem.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about Windows to know how or even whether I can change this setting to Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure) I've poked around the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) but no joy.
