General :: Fairly Straightforward Except For When Would Get To The "Installation Type" Screen?

I've read most of the install instructions for installing Fedora 14 from live dvd and it seems fairly straightforward except for when I would get to the "Installation Type" screen.I have read several different ways to approach this part of the install and was wondering what to do. I do not know if I have the knowledge to create a custom layout and add a shared partition for XP and Fedora or even if such is necessary. I do not know if their is a simpler option that will work.Windows XP, pentium 4, one hard drive, dual boot windows and Fedora on the same drive.
When my laptop is running of the battery the screen goes fairly dark, I don't like this, I've changed the power settings to try and stop it (unticking the reduce backlight) but it doesn't do anything.
I can't boot Ubuntu 9.10 on this computer (on my other computer it works fine). When I try to run it from the CD or USB I see a screen full of colored lines, and when I try to use safe graphics I get to the shell but the whole screen is blinking and I can't type any command. Anyone knows how to solve it? My graphics card is GeForce 7300 LE and on my other computer (the one that can run Ubuntu find) has an on-board graphics card.
I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my Dell laptop earlier, and all went well until I tried to finally login. A dull black screen is presented (I don't know if that's normal; I expected a pleasant splash screen haha). As a windows user, I can only explain it as looking like a command prompt. The first line asks me for my login (which is my first name). I type it in, press enter, and then it asks me for my password. The problem is, no matter what I press, nothing happens after that.
I have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.
I am interested in setting up speech recognition on my notebook. I have installed Sphinx3 and pocket_sphinx for my distro (Fedora 14), but have googled without success looking for an entry-level guide to get me started.I am wading through the doco at CMU, but I'm finding it hard to relate their text to the installed files on my system. They assume the user has downloaded and compiled from source, whereas I just used 'yum'.
Better: is there a front-end which presents a more usable interface than the fairly sparse man pages available? The sphinx3* tools do not seem to have any man pages and pocket_sphinx has man pages that assume I know what I am doing. As far as speech recognition is concerned, I am very much a pbeu (poor blinking end user) with no training.
I'm trying to extract the sender id from a fairly large number of files and am having trouble assigning variables from a file. Here is what I have so far, (which is fairly kludgy I know, but it's been some years since I've done any scripting or programming, and I find that I have lost the knack to a large degree).
After installing lots of stuff from the main repo (letters Q though U). I, apon starting to catalog the missing software that V-Z needed (and I did not have) I found that open office would not print letters on the screen. I tried rebooting (the computer)and reinstalling (open office is what I reinsalled) and nothing worked. I then tried to type on to a txt document using Kwrite and it wored at first then it started to type symbols and a pop up on the lower left showed the symbols then ABC etc. I clicked on ABC and Kwrite worked but open office did not. If it helps I installed some program that had to do whith typing python. I need to know the following
1:Is it a bug or my mistake? 2:How do I get open office up and running?
I have problem with login to Fedora 14. After I type my password is show Fedora 14 screen but It stop doing anything it show only Fedora 14 Picture background.
OS: Fedora 12 Video card: ATI Radeon 9200 series Monitor: ViewSonic 19"
I installed Fedora 12 configured Gnome automatically. Generally default settings. My monitor was connected directly to the video card and all was good. My video card was detected and my monitor was detected as ViewSonic Corporation 19" and I can set the screen resolution to 1280x1024. I had no xorg.conf file, as it seems that Fedora 12 does a great job of PnP to just set everything up.Now I go and complicate things by hooking up my monitor through a KVM switch. All of a sudden my monitor is "Unknown" and the best resolution I can achieve is 800x600.
Sure, I could go and reconnect without the KVM, but I want to be able use it.Is it possible to edit xorg.conf to tell it "Trust me, just use 1280x1024 at 60Hz even though you can't figure out what the monitor is"?
I tried a number of the posted suggestions to generate xorg.conf files but none of them get me what I need. A simple sample file listing that does the minimum is greatly appreciated (I can experiment from there once I get a basic setup working).And can someone explain if it is X or the ATI driver that is getting confused by the unknown monitor type. It helps to know what is actually going on in addition to a fix (so I can figure it out myself in the future). Thanks!
It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.
I had Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and used the Upgrader to go to 10.10. After it went through downloading and installing Ubuntu, it wanted me to restart. Upon restarting and picking Ubuntu in the Boot Options, it says something is missing in NTFS called wiulibsomething then it goes to this cmd type screen with grub>. I have used Linux for about three weeks now, and I think one of the threads after me has already talked about this and I'm really not sure how any of this works. I don't want to sound dumb, but yeah, I've used Windows all my life and I'm clueless how to fix this. EDIT: Error is Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB possible device or file completions.
What I am looking for is a dashboard type plugin for Rhythmbox which will show on the main screen ...then (because of the small size) I can use VNC on my Android Phone to see what is playing and to change songs etc.
When i type vi /etc/network/interfaces, i get a blank screen with blue dashes on the left side. "/etc/network/interfaces/" [New DIRECTORY]. I am running Ubuntu 11.04 server and am trying to set static ip. I found a work around but why is this happening?
I have an old machine running Ubuntu 9.10 and XP.t is a P4 and Nvidia FX5200 card.Yesterday all of a sudden the screen started flashing black, the same type as when you install new graphics drivers and the resolution is changing. Only here it keeps happening over and over, the mouse isn't usable fully, the icons and menus are distorted, and I basically can't do anything.
I ended up reinstalling 9.10 and everything was working fine until I installed EnvyNG to get my nVidia drivers. It required a restart, and once I logged in the same thing started happening. So I said screw this, and installed 8.04. Yet even in 8.04, once I used EnvyNG to install the drivers, the same thing happened.A few other detailsP works fine, although one time a similar thing happened on XP (not as bad), and was fixed with a reboot.- This PC runs through a KVM switch, but I connected it directly and the same thing happens.I've found no help via Google. Sounds like a possible hardware problem, but it seems to work fine in XP and only acts up in Ubuntu once I install drivers.
In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)
I just loaded octave. I ran through a few examples of how to implement a script file. Everything works until I get to "plot". When I run the "plot" command I get the following.

I can't seem to get Ubuntu to run on my old Dell Dimension 2300. It boots to a purple screen then it goes to a black screen with a load of writing nothing else happens after this screen. [URL] Could someone advise how I can get it to work?
been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.
When I was using AntiX, I liked how I could just type "xlock" in a terminal and it would lock the screen until I came back and typed my password. I saw that there was no "xlock" package, so googling around, I saw it was replaced with xlockmore and xlockmore-gl, neither of which there seems to be a package for in the Squeeze repositories. I tried xscreensaver, but I prefer the simplicity of xlock (and I like that it doesn't leave a daemon runnig when not in use). Is there a way to safely install it, or should I just be looking for an alternative?
I currently have Windows 7/Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot, and have decided to get rid of Windows. So I booted up the Ubuntu installation CD which gives the following options on install:So my question is: will my personal files (which I have on partition 'D:', separate from the Windows installation partition) be erased with this option?
I have windows7 with partition of C:40G, D:40G, E:70.I want to install fedora15,so I use the tool "Disk Management" of win7 to shrink E:.Then I have E:60G and 10G unallocated.
I use Liveusb-creator and boot from usb.It works well and I can use fedora15 just like livecd.But when I install fedora to hard disk,I meet a problem and I don't know how to solve it.
The installation procedure comes "Which type of installation would you like?".There's five options 1."Use All Space" 2."Replace Existing Linux System" 3."Shrink Current System" 4."Use Free Space" 5."Create Custom Layout".I've already got 10G unallocated space,so I select "Use Free Space".But the problem is that the fedora installer popups a messagebox says something that means that I don't have enough space to allocate to fedora15.
I come back to "Which type of installation would you like?" and select "Create Custom Layout".The installer display 4 entries of my hard disk:sda1 unknown 0M, sda2 100M windows remain partition, sda3 with capacity 39900M, sda4 with capacity 112625M.The partition display of my hard disk is so strange and there is no free space.
Is the problem of win7 "Disk Management" or "Fedora Installer"? How can I really get some free space to install fedora15?
I cannot for the life of me get my HD working again. I tried following all the various remedies I could find but to no avail.

It goes on and one like this. I'm stuck using the LiveCD for now (Jaunty) so I have some limitations.
Fresh install from the new CD (via BitTorrent). Installation seemed to go cleanly, with no errors or warnings, but a long delay while some files were downloading from the overloaded servers. However, after the reboot, the machine was unusable. Can't log in because it won't recognize any characters coming from the keyboard when I try to type my password. Hardware is a Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad R52 with 1.5 GB RAM. Extremely vanilla machine. Possible wrinkle in that I'm trying another VM this time around, using VMware Player 3.0.1. Right now I'm assuming this installation is dead and non-recoverable.
I'm running Lucid Lynx 64bit. I tried installing VLC through the U-Software Center but it failed. So I tried it through command line and that failed. Here is the message I get:

I have VirtualBox up and running, and the installation is working, but for some bizarre reason...the Virtual Drive isn't letting me type into to complete the Installation of Ubuntu 10.10. I am currently using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
