View 4 RepliesI'm running Fedora 10 [KDE] on an Acer laptop and am having problems configuring "hot keys" for it. First thing that needs to be mentioned is that the hotkeys used to work when I was running it on Gnome without me having to do anything. I assumed that this will be the case with KDE too. In any case, I think driver installation is supposed to be quite straight forward. There are two packages: acer_acpi and acerhk and different installation instructions for each one of them. The problem I am having is when I run the makefile script for either one of these, I get the following output in the terminal:

I think build-essential and some other packages are normally needed, but since you can't get them for Fedora (?), I groupinstalled "Development Tools" and some other group.
I have had my little netbook for over a year now but I must admit, that Linpus and I do not like each other (thinking of having someone put Ubuntu on it - heard thats better).Now I have moved and am trying to get my netbook to access the new internet connection. So far so good. The wireless connection is standing (100% connected), but now I get the message Server not found. I am using Firefox by the way. And yes, I have googled this problem, all plus are plugged, I have been online with this computer before etc.And right now I am online with my second computer, which has no problems accessing the internet.What now? I must also say that for a NETbook I am having a hell lot of trouble going online... Where other computers just connect, this little devil has problems very often.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Apsire T690 3.0Ghz compy. My graphics and sound is integrated and I'm looking for the right drivers. I would just run the driver search on ubuntu, however, that PC is not hooked up to the internet and cannot be easily. Is there a way for me to manually find and install the drivers I need on another computer, transfer and install them? I searched on [URL]... but I couldn't find any drivers that were for my T690 and compatible with Linux.

I have an Acer Aspire 5102 notebook computer with the infamous Broadcom 4318 chipset. In the past I have had to install FW cutter & proprietary drivers to get this chipset to work with Ubuntu. With the release of Ubuntu 10.10 Marverick Meercat I seem to remember the WiFi working immediately after installation; although I could be mistaken.
Will I have to go through similar gymnastics to get Debian to work on my system; or do you think it will work right away?
I have an Acer Aspire One 1551 netbook. After I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix (my first Ubuntu, though), I discovered that wi-fi device isn't being recognized - ifconfig says that I only have ethernet device present.Somehow rfkill list indicates, that acer-wireless is always blocked. How to unblock it? rfkill unblock 0 doesn't resolve the issue - device is still blocked.somehow 'Fn+WiFi' combination on keyboard activates/deactivates Bluetooth instead of WiFi. Can I alter the behavior of the combination to turn on/off wireless networking? I googled for a while but fruitlessly. Is it a known problem? Is there a workaround for it already? Is there any additional information (clues) I can provide to speedup the process a bit?

I am a Windows user, and have resigned myself to the concept that when things get completely FUBAR you need to just take a deep breath and start over.
Is there a procedure to completely delete and re-install Ubuntu, or should I delete its partition altogether, and re-create and re-install it? I can do that if I really have to.
I have not accumulated enough stuff here that I could not just make a clean start, if that will fix this mess. Somehow I imagined that this would be different from Windows, but maybe it really isn't.
What holds me back is seeing the multitude of people having trouble with wireless in 10.04. Is this a widespread problem that has a good chance of really getting fixed, soon?
At the minimum, It has fallen off the radar screen, although the hotel's system might have gone down, as it often does.
I just purchased an Acer Aspire 5050, and was trying to install Ubuntu on it for my mother. (No, I am not forcing it on her, she actually asked for it.) I burned a CD and put it in the drive, and it said Operating System not found. So I went into the BIOS and told it to boot nothing but the optical drive. Same error. I burned another disk with the same computer, and then another computer. Same error. (Hereafter referred to as "nothing")
So I went and purchased a 4GB flash drive from micro center. Converted my iso to img and DDed from my Mac, then set the BIOS to boot it. The BIOS recognizes the disk, but won't boot from it, giving the same error. So I thought: Fine, I guess I can't get _nix to boot, how about Windows 7? Put the disk in that I used to install on my laptop, genuine Windows 7 disk, nothing. I tried the Vista disk that came with the computer, also nothing.
Any ideas on how to install ANY operating system on this machine? I get absolutely no POST errors. I turned off Quiet Boot and looked, no errors there either. I would be fine installing any _nix based, it doesn't have to be an easy install. I can provide more information as needed, not a problem. I can't think of any more useful information at the moment.
I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.
The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:
1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install F12 on my desktop. I previously had F9 installed. I zero-filled the harddrive before attempting installtion. When attempting to install F12 from the DVD I get various messages about needing drivers. The drivers listed seem to run the gamut from network cards to harddrives. I have an SATA drive installed as my primary disk. I have not been able to install any version since F9 so I thought I should finally try to nail down what is going on.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu 11.04 few things first: I cant figure out how to get to the x.org configuration, i've searched high and low for it. I looked in the software center and it says i have OpenGL installed, but when i search for OPENGL or x.org in my applications menu, it only gives me available downloads, and nothing to actually open in a window and use. -When I open the additional drivers menu its 100% blank. not 1 driver is listed. -I searched for and downloaded the proprietary ATI driver from the software center, additional drivers menu is still blank, and I can't run Unity now. -I tried to open the ATI Catalyst control panel, and it says the driver is not properly configured, and to run the aticonfig, where is this? i cant find it. None of this is making any sense to me. I've been reading forum posts and numerous 3rd party sites for days, and nothing works.
I'm just trying to get my laptop to run EVE. It ran fine when I had windows on here. All of my problems with it seem to be stemming from my Graphics, and I cant seem to figure out how to fix it. It seems that every fix I can find, doesnt work on my laptop, and many of the control panels people point to as a resource to fix a problem, I either can't find them, or they are not populated the way they should be. I hate to say it, but if I can't get this issue resolved, I may have to turn back to Windows, The main reason I even have this laptop is to play games when I'm not at home...and I cant do that....all i can use it for ATM is music and internet...

I downloaded the wubi version of karmic kaola and I am trying to get ubuntu 9.10 to find my driver for wireless internet. I go to system>administration>hardware drivers. When I click on the command which finds the drivers, I get no proprietary hardware is in use. How do I get ubuntu to recognize drivers?

I tried reinstalling the video drivers using sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel with no luck, telling me I already am using the latest version.
I'm trying to load drivers from .tar.bz2 file. I got the .tar opened and extracted to directory ABC. When I try to CD to that directory, I get a message the directory does not exist even tho' I'm looking right at it and the ls command shows it. The full path is user/downloads.ABC.
When I try to run the next command $tar -xvzf DPB_RT2870_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x.tgz I get a message Ubuntu 10.04 cannot find -xvzf. When I try to run the Makefile command locate in the same ABC directory, I again the error message cannot find Makefile.
I have to set up my development environment under OEL 5.4. The internal directory structure is more or less fixed, the question is where to put the whole application tree in standard FHS for the development phase.For production, the system will be deployed on a server where data is kept with an Oracle 11g database. Development goes with JDeveloper which has its own internal application/project directory structure; however, I whould like to be independent from this. Unfortunately, by carefully studying the web for FHS, if I will adhere to it I only find ready-made packages to put under /opt, for example. No development aspects are mentioned. make some proposal, possibly with respect to best practices.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI made an image of a server(A). It did not work because It did not see /dev/sda. So I used another cd from indentical sever(B), cd which had work. Then mounted the nfs copy the image over. Server(B) had slightly older version of sles. And its not using lvm. But point is it had appropriate driver in the image cd.
Now situation is, This new image copied ever thing over.(I can mount it using LIVE CD). But When I boot up server it wont see vg volume group. I believe scsi driver is missing.After booting from LIVE CD I chroot in root used yast to add initrd modules, qla2xxx, mptbase, mptscsih(other server(B) had those). Still when I reboot it, it get stuck saying
