View 2 RepliesI installed ubuntu with the windows installer. while installing in windows, multiple error messages showed up, but installation still proceeded.it rebooted, and ubuntu finished installation.on the next reboot,when i chose ubuntu from the windows boot manager, it loaded grub.however,there was no option for booting ubuntu in grub, and you are forced to go back to the windows boot manager.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Matlab in Ubuntu 10.10. I was able to get it running and I saw the initializing screen. However it showed me an error with OpenGL
"warning : could not query OpenGL"
and it freezes there. I tried many things to get over with it and it didn't work.
I updated my laptop to 10.04 earlier today and it worked fine but it was being a bit glitchy so i rebooted my laptop and it worked fine until it showed an error saying "cannot reserve MMIO region".
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was working with timezones when I came across a very strange error. Date command showed Invalid date/time when I set the date/time to 27 Mar 2011, 02:00:00. On further analysis, I observed that the time was jumping to 03:00:00 after 01:59:59 when the date is 27th Mar, 2011.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
While i'm installing few rpm packages using yum i got missing dependency error. So how can i clear that error and how install successfullly.

This problem started when I pulled one of the minimize window out of panel to desktop.
Before creating a DVD of an old movie, I tried to free up some hard disk space by burning a batch of old cartoons (Betty Boop, from the '30s.) to a data DVD, and deleting the directory after making sure the burn was good. The burn went fine, and the disc ejected correctly. (This is an important point!) I immediately re-inserted it so that I could check the contents, as I've done many times before, but it never showed up on my desktop.
(F10 with Gnome) I opened Nautilus and found two copies of the DVD listed, and both context menus listed both Mount and Eject, as though Gnome wasn't sure if it was or wasn't mounted. Checking, neither shows up in /media, /mnt or /etc/mtab. At this point, I can no longer mount it or any other disc. I've tried logging out and logging in, with no change. I'd consider a reboot, but my uptime has quite literally reached Biblical proportions and I hate to waste it if I don't have to. How to tell Fedora to let go of a DVD that isn't in the drive any longer?
I currently have installed 2 GiB RAM memory on a Dell laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 release. Today, as I was playing kmahjongg, suddenly my whole screen became black with a small " _ " symbol in the top left corner. My cursor showed up, however I wasn't able to use it. Inputing something with keyboard or trying to enter in tty didn't worked, so I restarted the machine with the power button. Now, when I check the gnome-system-monitor, it shows up that I have 1,8 GiB RAM memory available, instead of 1,9 GiB how it used to be.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI followed the guideline 'How to use PreUpgrade' to upgrade F14 -> F15. What happened was that after reboot: 1. The screen was a mess ... no readable information 2. No reaction on pressing 'return' 3. The disk led showed no activity, so I reseted the computer after 5 minutes inactivity. The system came up but with F14. I repeated the 'preupgrade' and all messages are in [URL]... but still F14 comes up after reboot. Where have I missed ... eager to get F15
View 4 Replies View Relatedrecently performed an upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. when I rebooted, my GRUB menu showed only the memtest86+ option, rather than the usual options for Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch, and WinXP (which I haven't booted in a very long time, so I am almost 100% sure that it is not WinXP's fault. I was able to boot using a Live CD, and when I checked grub.cfg, all of my boot entries were still there. However, when GRUB itself actually loads, only memtest86+ is in the menu. I also checked that I can still boot by editing the memtest86+ option in grub so that it matched the entry for Ubuntu in grub.cfg, and it still booted correctly. However, I am curious as to why my GRUB is now forcing me to manually enter the boot entry on each boot. Here is my grub.cfg:

# It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a linux (Slackware) machine and the time/date is like, June 23rd 2003, 10:00am (It's 11 here) and I am not able to set the time to have it correct. I change the timezome to Montreal but the time is still wrong.
Is there a way to force it to sync with my domain controler or even another online NTP server?
I'm just wondering what the limits for time are. I have a program that always takes exactly 20 ms, so I assume this is the lowest it can measure, but I want to see if there's some sort of documentation of this.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had ubuntu studio installed ( for the record I hated it and every ubuntu flavor I have ever used. ) After backing off all the stuff from my home dir I started to install testing from a dvd. ( Is there a net install for testing? I couldn't find it) Don't ask me how it happened but some times I would have two grub graphical boot menus. One would chain to the other. I suspect that happened from one of the very friendly updates ubuntu did. Well when I tried to install testing I got a red screen telling me that grub wouldn't install so I tried lilo. Well it wouldn't install either. Back in the old days when I was a slackware guy installing from a stack of floppies I had a trick to wipe out any boot loaders or other stuff that gave me a problem. I would dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<drive info such as hda with no partition number> .
This would write zeros over the drive and it would look like a new drive. So I did this trick. But still no joy ( this is a clue, dd was also thinking that the beginning of the drive was after the boot sector.). I suspected that the installer wasn't doing it's job right. So I got a PCLinuxOs disk and started that installer. The PCLinuOS installer has a cutesy visual bar that shows the partitions. Well sure enough the boot sector showed as blank. This was what the Debian installer had done. It left the boot sector blank and tried to install the boot loader right after it. This won't work. Now I consider when some version of Linux falls on it's face and another version does it right that the version that fell on it's face has a problem.
One might even call it a bug. But I don't know what to do about it. I don't think the problem is with grub or the installer itself. I think how the drive was looked at was faulty. That's why dd didn't blankout the boot sector. So what do I do to help get the Deb people to fix this? The more I think about it the more I think the problem is with udev ( what a surprise) I think this because I suspect dd looks to the info set out by udev to find the beginning of the drive.
I would like to know if there is a solution to this problem. The multimedia hotkeys (play/pause, stop, volume up/down, volume mute, ecc) stop working when i open any menu (for example mintmenu, that i use, or any menu of firefox like bookmarks) or if i start an application, such as openarena. The major problem is for volumes keys, that stop working in these cases.
Any ideas? I tried to change keyboard model, disable hotkeys mapped in prefereces->keyboard shortcut (with this they just stop working), but nothing changed.
The system asked me to reboot and I just shut down the computer.Some hours ago, I wanted to start the computer and the system halted after the first logo showed of Ubuntu, after 15 minutes waiting, nothing happened. I tried to push keys on the keyboard, nothing helped (I even couldn't put on CAPS or num lock on the keyboard).After a secoind reboot I didn't even saw the Ubuntu logo. When there's a black screen, it just sits there.I have no idea if there was a kernel update (I assume there was, because the system wanted me to reboot)
View 6 Replies View RelatedHere's exracted from ubuntu Grub2 document https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2:
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 This setting determines how long a screen without the GRUB 2 menu will be displayed. While the screen is blank, the user can press any key to display the menu.The default behavior is to hide the menu if only one operating system is present. If a user with only Ubuntu wishes to display the menu, place a # symbol at the start of this line to disable the hidden menu feature.According to above information, I have tried to set below in order the show the menu:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=false
GRUB_TIMEOUT="20"

I am still struggling with implementing my exclusions, from this thread:url
Backups via Grsync are OK, but I want to exclude a bunch of hopefully-useless stuff, like thumbnails, trash, cache etc.
It looks easy here:
url(last post)
url
So I had a first attempt, to exclude the ".thumbnails" folder.I created a text file "exclusions" in "/home/me/.grsync".In that file, I wrote "-.thumbnails/".In Grsync Advanced Options, I wrote "--exclude-from=/home/me/.grsync/exclusions".Simulation results showed no red errors but no good results.Execution showed the .thumbnails folder still present.
I tried manually deleting the .thumbnails folder from the backup & rerunning Grsync, but it puts all the thumbnails back.
I changed the "exclusions" file to say just "-.thumbnails" (I really am not familiar with CLI syntax) but that does not work either.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI admit this has been a particularly bad year for me, but it isn't THAT unusual by my standards. I typically spend I would reckon quite honestly about 70-80% of my time with computers just fixing stuff up that either I broke or was broke in the first place. Usually it's the latter by some considerable margin. That's really inefficient, isn't it? I just wondered what others' experiences are of this phenomenon. Obviously I don't do computers for a living or I would have starved years ago. So what is the Panel's consensus view on the percentage of wasted time we should expect to spend, on average, "running just to stand still" on maintenance tasks?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded and installed Fedora 11 Alpha. I then installed the Nvidia drivers for my Graphics card (GeForce 7800 GTX). I discovered that Fedora 11 is using a Beta version of Xorg and an incompatible ABI. So, my drivers would not work with Fedora 11 without me dowgrading the Xorg server. I decided to reinstall Fedora 10 instead.
I started the install, and when the installation loaded the generic video drivers, my screen showed only a bunch of colored vertical lines. Fedora 10 doesn't allow me to install in text mode.
I was created one folder in linux with current time was 1978(For example).
