Debian :: How Many Tasks (both Completed And Pending) Could Crontab Hold/handle
Aug 17, 2010
As I have developed a part of my project based on crontab and now one of my team member has raised a question based on performance and load/stress, I would like to know the following limits of crontab.I assume each line in crontab file is a task; and also crontab would hold completed and pending tasks.1. How many tasks (both completed and pending) could crontab hold/handle?2. Will crontab run as expected if there are 100s of completed and less than 100 pending task?

Logged in a root and restarted cron deamon using "/etc/init.d/crond restart"As per my understanding now my testScript should start running at 5:18 am Thuesday

I'm running Debian Jessie 64bit, the X-window is xfce4, I found the 'OpenJDK Java 7 Policy Tool' entry is already under the Settings menu, it seems appeared after I customized jessie a little, that installing nvidia driver, virtualbox ose, adobe reader and adobe flash player. From console, I can check there is java, but no javac.For doing java programming, I don't know if the OpenJDK was complete installed or not, should I continue to use it or remove it to install Oracle JDK?

I'm running Debian Squeeze (6.0.1) 64-bit and I'm trying to run Microsoft Office 2007 (due to formatting issues with OpenOffice) through Wine (version 1.0.1 from the repositories). I followed the instructions over here but when I try to run the setup I get an error box with the following message:
Setup did not complete successfully. We are sorry for the inconvenience. An error occurred during the installation, and setup was unable to complete. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. And there are two button: "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send". And the installation is aborted. Is there anyway to make this run?

Over the past few days, I've noticed that administrative tasks sometimes fail to start. I'm asked to enter the administrative password, "Granting rights" appears in the bottom panel for a few seconds, but then disappears. I'm using Debian Lenny. This is only an intermittent problem, and if a task does fail to start, it will start on the next attempt. Tasks which have failed to start are:
*Launching Synaptic form the System menu.
*Launching a root terminal from the Applications menu.
*Launching Nautilus with root privileges from a terminal using gksu.
After coming across the following post, I thought maybe it was an issue with kernel 2.6.32-bpo.5-686, because I'd recently upgraded to that kernel too, but I'm advised that that isn't so.It was suggested that something else from backports might be causing the problem.

I installed htop a few days ago and have been looking on it for a few days now. the server idles on about 80~ish tasks constantly with arond 20 apache tasks/connections to it all the time and the cpu usages of the 2 cores at about 1% each. but asoon as more apache2 connections/task get started and the servers tasks reach 120-140~ Apache2 timesout if you try to go to the webpage i host on the server. when it's back down to around 80~tasks you can reach the webpage once again. why is this ? what's causing this to happen ?

I just changed the desktop on my thinkpad from awesome to i3. And now I have some very strange issues with the screen resolution. Because at home I use this x60 thinkpad on a dockingstation and a 19" display. As long as I used Awesome as my Desktop, the display manager as well as the desktop itself could handle the different screen resolution depending on if I'm out with just my 12" on my thinkpad or with the much bigger screen on my home 19" display.
I can understand that i3 maybe cannot handle this alone and I need xrandx to enforce the screen resolution. But why is the display manager (lightdm) also affected by this change? What is so different that even the DM cannot find the proper screen resolution?

Title says it all. Is there any way I can make usbmount mount CDs and DVDs when inserted into the drive? Or was it only designed for flash devices and hard drives? Specifying UDF and ISO9660 as mountable filesystems did not work, FWIW.Also, if usbmount can't do this, is there a way to do it using udev rules? Without requiring configuration for a specific user?(I would really rather avoid dealing with HAL/udisks, the reliance on Consolekit is making everything a complete mess.)To be a bit clearer... Is there any way of implementing something like FreeBSD's automounter on Linux, without involving Consolekit and its spectacular brokenness?

Can squid do 'fair bandwidth sharing' ? What i mean is, if there is 1 user online on a 4mg line, that user will be using the entire 4mg line speed, and if there are 2 users online, each user will have 2mg line speed, and so on. I have squid cache set up already, but i just need to know how bandwidth distribution/sharing can be handled Can squid also be used to limit/disconnect users after they have used up their allotted bandwidth? [I have a mikrotik router connected to the adsl (for wireless users)]

I have a question about using crontab with /etc/crontab...
I had a cron job that I needed to run as root. At the time I thought that sticking it in /etc/crontab would be a good idea. However, I used the crontab command to edit /etc/crontab, which I guess is not standard procedure? Specifically, I configured /etc/crontab as my local user's crontab (i.e. sudo crontab /etc/crontab) then added my cron job as I would a local user crontab (i.e. sudo crontab -e).
Originally, my cron job looked like this:
30 * * * * root /my/batch/script &> /dev/null
After adding the new cron job I started seeing errors. Something to the effect of "can't find command root" or something similar. So I removed the 'root' user definition from the cron job and the job started running fine. However, because this is /etc/crontab, there are other system related cron jobs that have been defined to run under the root account (e.g. "17 * * * * root cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly" runs as root, etc.). So these pre-existing system cron jobs, which up until now have been running smoothly, are now generating "can't find command root" errors. But I think that the system cron jobs _are_ successfully being run someplace because logrotate seems to be working.
So what I _think_ is happening is that /etc/crontab is being run twice: once as the system crontab, and once as my sudoed local user's crontab. When I run crontab -l I see nothing, but when I run sudo crontab -l I can see the contents of /etc/crontab. I am reluctant to delete my sudoed local user's crontab, because then in the process I would be deleting the system crontab, and I do not know how I should restore the system crontab's contents. (I am still not sure as to the most appropriate way to edit the system crontab).
How can I get out of this mess? I want /etc/crontab to go back to the way it was before--running _once_ as the system crontab. As for my new cron job, I'm willing to reconfigure it anywhere so long as I am still able to run it as root. Any ideas? (I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Server LTE)

I have one of my Red Hat 5.4 box connected to the RHN and I managed to download and install selected files and updates. Lately, it has stopped doing so. I can go to the RHN webpage and select/apply the uppates I chose. But when I run the command "rhn_check", all I get is this
Loaded plugins: rhnplugin
[root@ELSDB09 ~]# rhn_check
Loaded plugins: rhnplugin
The updates are not installed and RHN shows that update as "Pending". I am not sure which log file I can dig into.

The router should handle everything automatically and transparently. All you need to do is make sure that the wireless Ethernet adapters in the laptops can "talk" to the wireless router.

The script works fine, but I can't make it work with the cron jobs. There are many methods given on the internet to grab screen, but none of them works with cron.

I have created a small script to compile a network weathermap using the cacti RRD files. The script reads the *.conf files and outputs an html and a png file. When I manually run the script it works normally.
I have edited my crontab with the crontab -e command to run this script every minute
The problem is script itself works when I manually call it but when it is run using crontab it doesn't do anything. The cron.log shows that the script IS being run every minute with no errors but the files (html and png) do not get written. What am I doing wrong and how do troubleshoot this?

I have a heavily used file server that I want to restart, then if it requires e2fsck's on any volume to run them after it restarts. The only problem is that the server is rarely rebooted, and they said it might kernel panic because its been so long. I've heard there's a way to have it go past the kernel panic if it does happen, but I'm not sure how to do that or the other stuff.If it was a Windows server, I would schedule a shutdown with the force switch, and have the chkdsk's already scheduled for each volume on reboot. But for RHEL, I really don't know.I'm hoping this can be done, so that way I can have it kick off at say 7am, then when I get in at 8am it will probably be near the end of the e2fsck's so I can see what's going on.

I am writing a server which uses edge-triggered epoll. When the server calls accept(), it just extracts the first connection in the pending queue. If there are more connections that are waiting, can we make the server accept all the pending connections? I wrote a loop like the following:
do {
client_fd = accept(...);
/* Work with the client fd */
} while (client_fd != -1); [/code]
Doesn't seem to work. A related question, more a clarification, is as follows. My understanding was that a connect() at the client returns only when accept() in the server returns. Clearly, I was incorrect. Even with no accept() call in the server, my client was able to connect and send data. Am I getting this right?

I have been forbidden to enable automatic updates on our Ubuntu servers, for both security and regular packages.When I log into any of my four Ubuntu servers, the welcome message contains this:
39 packages can be updated.
26 updates are security updates.
However, when I run the Nagios plugin that monitors APT, I get:
% /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_apt
APT WARNING: 33 packages available for upgrade (0 critical updates).
I need to know how to properly detect that there are pending security updates, and regular updates. Once I can do that, I plan to write a Nagios script that will return WARNING for pending regular updates, and CRITICAL for pending security updates.
