General :: Enable Gtk Themes When Ubuntu Started In Xterm Mode?
Aug 5, 2010
i booted up my Ubuntu 10.04 and at the login promt I changed from GNOME to xterm session. Then i logged in and opened my programs and it didn't have the gtk theme enabled that i have when I start my ubuntu in GNOME session mode. How do i enable gtk themes there so everything looks pretty again? I like starting from xterm because it's very fast..
This is how it looks, notice the ugly buttons and everything... the gtk theme is not loaded and i don't know how to enable it..
[URL]
And here i will show you how it should look and how it normally looks with the gtk theme loaded up... basically i would like it to look like this even when i start it from xterm..
[URL]
Really, I would like to know how i can enable gtk themes when I run my computer in xterm session mode. Is there another application that i have to run? I don't want to run the full GNOME environment, i really don't.

I have created a Radius startup script in /etc/init.d for Debian which looks like this:
Now this works but when I boot my server it shows as ready to process requests and it doesnt login. I cant get a login prompt. If I do a CTRL C to try close this it doesnt work and just shows CTRL C on the screen, I can type in kill radius but nothing happens.
I guess its because my script is in debugging mode, most of the suggestions for a script said I should use:
However the radiusd a doesnt work and if I try to run using command radiusd in it comes up and says invalid command and I dont have the option to use
So if this script runs on my server, I could connect to the server through a putty session via port 22 and log on fine and do what I need too, but if I try to connect to the server directly after boot its just sitting on ready to process requests and I cannot do anything when directly at the server. On one particular server I didnt have the network confg right so I couldnt putty to it and now Im a bit stuck. Will I need to rebuild my server? As I canït break out of this ready to process requests and I cannot login as its just sitting there, I have tried connecting through serial management via my laptop but I cant do anything this way either the only way I could do anything was if I could get through to the server on putty.
There must be a way when directly at the server to cancel the radius and get logged in? As Ive mentioned CTRL C doesnt work. I can get to the ok prompt but not sure what command to use and if I could change the network config at the ok prompt or if I could somehow cancel the startup script at the ok prompt? I thought I could use the init commands to start the server without the script starting but the init commands dont work and the server just sits there.
Also I guess I shouldnt be using radius X in my startup script, to prevent this problem is there something else I should be using? I tried using radius x (the small x) and I hit enter and then no process for radius starts .

When I login over ssh or when I open a local text shell I can't get dircolors to show up.
If I open a shell in an X-Session the dircolors are there. Also, colors work fine over text mode and SSH, in both of them VIM works perfectly fine with my colorfull configurations.
This is the session I get when I do a remote login over SSH:
Code: Select allremote ~ % echo $TERM
screen-256color

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.
The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits. When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx

I would like to install a new icon theme without effecting my currently selected panel theme, as i think the Ambience panel theme looks really nice and unified but im not too keen on the Ubuntu-Mono icons. Is this easily possible, without going into my icon folders and replacing all the instances of one style for another? Are there any applications for gnome icon theming like OS X's Candybar?Im sure others must desire to change only the icons and perhaps it is really easy and this is why i couldnt dig anythin up on google, that or im a useless googler.

I have kubuntu 9.04 installed in my computer and I am normally using a Gnome environment desktop (though I get back to KDE or Xfce if I have any troubles with Gnome)
This afternoon I restarted my computer and since ever I am unable to log in. I press the on button, get to the partition page and select Ubuntu 9.04 and the computer shows the login page
however, once I type in my password, the computer tries to log in but then brings me back to the login page asking for the password again. I have tried to login as Xfce, Gnome, KDE, Failsafe mode and the result is the same. The only way to get through is to login through the terminal, but then I am unable to get back to the graphical mode.

The first time I started F15 the following notice appeared (approx.: I have translated it from spanish):Quote:Unfortunately GNOME 3 failed on having started and it is now in alternative mode. It probably signifies that your system (graphic hardware or controller) is not capable of executing GNOME 3 complete.Computer data: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2,01GHz; 1.5 GB RAM; ATI Radeon 9200SE. Fedora 15.I have checked in several pages of the net that Radeon 9200SE is able to support 3D.I should like to modify the Open Source Xorg to enable the 3D mode (not to install the proprietary drivers, this will come later if there is not another solution), but I don't find the /etc/X11/xorg.conf. There is the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

Since of late "Appearance preference" behaves awkwardly . Normaly It is supposed to show themes in /usr/share/themes right? but now it shows themes only in ~/.themes folder. I don't know what affected the change. how do I configure it as to show themes in /usr/share/themes/,?
Also whatever theme I use , Controls would stay same(Classic controls). They wouldn't be update to those of the Theme used.

I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I had this error when installing and running a vncserver before, which I have now removed. However, the xterm's seem to remain in the system and are regenerating themselves. Should the pid IDs stay the same each time I run this?

My linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.

Is there any config files for xterm for default settings? For example, on my system, xterm start with black text on white background, and I want it the other way around. I can do it by starting it with:
xterm -bg black -fg white.
I want to set in a config file that if I run it without arguments, it will start with these options.

Something weird sometimes happens on my Debian system. Typically at the prompt line I can use combo like alt-d to delete a word, alt-f to go to the next word, etc. But quite regularly something happens in my xterm that makes alt-d and alt-f not work anymore: suddenly they print 'ä' (alt-d) and 'æ' (alt-f).
Note that this happens in a terminal that was acting like I wanted to at first. But then somehow must send a code or something that changes the behavior of the terminal. It happens in xterm because that's where I always work. If I go to a console by doing ctrl+alt+f1 then by default alt-d does what I want (delete word) and so does alt-f. Maybe that I could screw that one too by doing some bad manipulation: I just don't know because I don't work in text mode.
Also note that if I spawn an xterm from the "broken" xterm, then the new xterm work as I expect. What is going on? What am I turning on that was off previously? My .Xresources says that and, once again, when I open an xterm it behaves as I expect it, it's only later on that "something" makes that it goes back to broken "I-print-characters-with-diacritics-and-other-nonsense" mode:
$ more .Xresources
XTerm.vt100.eightBitInput: false
XTerm*eightBitInput: False
