Fedora Installation :: 12 And X Startup Failed On Nvidia / Falling Back To Text Mode?

Feb 23, 2010

I have an older PC that was running F11 without any problems. At some point I started updating to F12 through the web and got a a nice black screen that pretty much hosed my OS. (Not a big deal). So I went and downloaded the F12 Live CD which did the same thing.., at some point just after install the screen would be black and reset is the only option.Got the full F12 32-bit DVD and during the installation I get: "X Startup Failed,Falling back to text mode."Finishing the install I get to a nice black log-in prompt so I can log-in as root. From there I cant do much as I am a n00d in Linux to some extent and my network doesn't work

My video card is a Geforce FX 5200 which installed and worked just fine under F11 (without me doing anything but basic install and Ubuntu 9.10)

Installation :: Fedora 9, 10, And Ubuntu 8.10 Freeze / "x Startup Fails To Load, Falling Back To Text Mode"?

Feb 16, 2009

just built a computer and wanted to try out some linux.

First off I burned the Fedora 10 x86_64 disk image (using disk utility on my mac at 4x speed then verified it) to a dvd. I start the install. "x startup fails to load, falling back to text mode" comes up. I use the text install then. It gets to the actual installation of the different packages then a black screen shows up with white text that's highlighted red (sometimes it's blue). It then freezes and I reboot. Sometimes it freezes at different points and with different messages, but the description above is what happens most often.

I try writing it at 1x speed and verifying. same thing.I try the Live CD. It freezes. Then I tried Fedora 9. same thing.

Next I go to Ubuntu 8.10.I try the regular install, but the orange loading bar freezes.I try the Live CD-like install. It runs!...but when i go to install, when it gets to the partitioning part, it freezes and becomes unresponsive.

Each time it froze I let it sit for about 10 minutes, just to make sure it is in fact frozen. I've tried these installs numerous times.

Fedora :: Get Back Old Alt+Tab Behavior In F15/GNOME3?

May 28, 2011

After upgrading to F15 I noticed that Alt+Tab behaves now differently. For example, if I have several terminal windows open, I can't cycle through all of them by just pressing Alt+Tab repeatedly. Now the system just displays one terminal icon and icons for each terminal window, but if I keep pressing Tab (Alt being down all the time), it does not switch the window.

I want back the old behavior of the Alt+Tab keys!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Safe Graphics Mode Failed To Load

Aug 5, 2010

I made a backup of xorg.conf and added Xinerama and the other configuration items I needed. X failed to load. Then I copied my backup to xorg.conf and...X failed to load. Then I tried booting up in safe graphics made, and X failed to load. I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but it did nothing. Literally nothing -- no error, no output, no nothing. Then I saw someone who had suggested to apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg, then reinstall it, and X failed to load.

I am at a complete loss. I have now read that the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is no longer used, that the os is supposed to autodetect everything now, but in that case I don't see how I will ever get dual monitors. In any case, I can live without dual monitors, but I need at least ONE monitor, and I have no idea how to get the configuration working.

The clock is stuck in 12h mode and it doesn't take any new settings. 24h clock, showing seconds etc. all fail.

I have 2 different systems affected, one 64-bit and one 32-bit (pae kernel).

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome3 Reverts To Fallback Mode

Apr 13, 2013

I have just installed Debian Wheezy. However, on logging in for the first time it reverted back to what looks like gnome2. I think this is a graphics card issue...

lspci -v | grep VGA returns:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS780L [Radeon HD 3000] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

glxinfo | grep OpenGL returns:
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x209)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.5
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

Is this a proprietary firmware issue and am simply better off disabling the built in graphics card and purchasing a separate card or is there a simple fix for this?

Ubuntu :: Odd Resolution - Monitor After Switched It To TV Mode Then Back To PC Mode

Feb 8, 2011

When I first installed ubuntu 10.10, the display was for some reason tinted green and shifted a few inches to the right. After experimenting with the resolution preferences, I eventually got it to a large resolution (1280x720 ... or something like that) yet is was quite blurry. I found out that the problem was with my monitor after I switched it to TV mode, then back to PC mode. It became perfectly clear! All I had to do then was adjust the screen positioning by shifting it left a bit.

Even though I have made the resolution I figured out to be default, whenever I turn the PC on after shutting down, it goes back to the "green-and-to-the-side" mode. :/ Ain't really a big problem, until I tried to fiddle with the resolution preferences s'more.

Somehow, I have set it to be twice as wide of the maximum my monitor can display, went back to being green tinted for some reason, and is completely shifted left (yet the right side is still visible) This means that I cannot see what is going on the left side, and cannot adjust the resolution preferences, nor can I click blindly cuz the border is only around my visible side of the screen. Now it is stuck like this.

I've researched many hours and eventually found the terminal command for the resolution preferences. it popped up on the visible side. Although it was to no avail cuz I HAVE TRIED EVERY SETTING AND OPTION and absolutely nothing changed. I assume a system restore would simply revert it back to the previous satisfactory settings, but the thing is I want to FIX it. I am new to this terminal stuff, so I want to learn it and all that. To put it simply, here's what I want:

Learn how to manually adjust resolution without depending on a simple dialog box. Make the satisfactory resolution default and consistent through turning it on and off. Link that could teach me the essential commands, all this googling is stressful. D:

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04/Nvidia- Continually Defaults Back To Low Graphics Mode

Jul 8, 2010

10.04 and Nvidia video card.

This sequence:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo update-alternatives --config gl_conf (not sure what to choose, I just pick an option at random)
sudo ldconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig

and then restart gets everything apparently working correctly, with my desktop spread across two monitors.

However, after two or three computer restarts, it 'forgets' and defaults back to low graphics mode and all the common error messages mentioned in multiple threads here, with my second monitor just duplicating the primary monitor.

Under System-Hardware drivers it says Nvidia_current is activated but not in use, regardless of whether it starts normally or in low graphics mode.

What's up? It's a pain to have to go through that sequence over and over again, and then restart my computer every two or three days, and leaving the computer on 24/7 isn't an option. power saving and all that.

General :: Radius Has Started In Debugging Mode Upon Boot And Cannot Login

Oct 11, 2010

I have created a Radius startup script in /etc/init.d for Debian which looks like this:

Now this works but when I boot my server it shows as ready to process requests and it doesnt login. I cant get a login prompt. If I do a CTRL C to try close this it doesnt work and just shows CTRL C on the screen, I can type in kill radius but nothing happens.

I guess its because my script is in debugging mode, most of the suggestions for a script said I should use:

However the radiusd a doesnt work and if I try to run using command radiusd in it comes up and says invalid command and I dont have the option to use

So if this script runs on my server, I could connect to the server through a putty session via port 22 and log on fine and do what I need too, but if I try to connect to the server directly after boot its just sitting on ready to process requests and I cannot do anything when directly at the server. On one particular server I didnt have the network confg right so I couldnt putty to it and now Im a bit stuck. Will I need to rebuild my server? As I cant break out of this ready to process requests and I cannot login as its just sitting there, I have tried connecting through serial management via my laptop but I cant do anything this way either the only way I could do anything was if I could get through to the server on putty.

There must be a way when directly at the server to cancel the radius and get logged in? As Ive mentioned CTRL C doesnt work. I can get to the ok prompt but not sure what command to use and if I could change the network config at the ok prompt or if I could somehow cancel the startup script at the ok prompt? I thought I could use the init commands to start the server without the script starting but the init commands dont work and the server just sits there.

Also I guess I shouldnt be using radius X in my startup script, to prevent this problem is there something else I should be using? I tried using radius x (the small x) and I hit enter and then no process for radius starts .

This is how it looks, notice the ugly buttons and everything... the gtk theme is not loaded and i don't know how to enable it..

Ubuntu :: Machine Started Back Up - Frozen On Splash Screen

Oct 3, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS onto a blank hard drive with the prospective goal of running WoW on it. I installed Wine and all my security updates and restarted; everything worked fine, but I noticed that the system was suggesting that I get some "proprietary" drivers for my HD Radeon 4550 card. I proceeded to install them and was told that the the OS needed to restart to make the changes. I clicked the close button, restarted from the menu in the top-right hand corner, and when my machine started back up -bam!- frozen on the ubuntu splash screen.

I'm reinstalling now (after trying everything I could think of) and I just want to know how the hell this happened, and how I can avoid it in the future. I'm trying to make the switch from Linux to Windows, but this isn't making it any easier. Also: is there any way I can set up ubuntu to look and interface like a windows clone.

It's possible that the above module doesn't match the

how am I supposed to install a package without my package manager?

I can't install software via System/Administration as well.

It's so weird that I can't find any threads about this, apparently I'm the only one with this problem.
