This is a bit weird, but in thinking about cleaning up my hdd, which has a single install of 10.04/EMC2 on it,I took my first look at Computer Janitor. When it opened, it seemed amazingly basic, in fact just two panes with no indication of what the few entries were indicating. The "About" tag in the Help menu indicated that it was version 1.13.3, but Synaptic tells me that version 1.14.1 is installed.A bit of reading in the Forum suggests that this is not highly thought of, anyway, so I shall leave it alone. As I'm currently having other issues with this installation, and am about to do a clean install, I thought I'd drop this pebble in the pond, and learn a bit more before my next turn around.

I made a thread asking if I can install fedora on a compThread:Everyone said yes ( P.S. Im using the LXDE thing that bob said), but when I put the disk in and boot from it.I got a black screen with a bunch of stuff on it and it just repeated every couple of minutes. So, am I stuck on XP? ( had the same problem with ubuntu 8.10, when trying to install).

I'm about to install Gnome on my ubuntu server box (that means, a headless server which I'm gonna access through vnc) I usually just run "apt-get install gnome" But it installs a bunch of stuff I'm not going to use (email, office, games, etc..). All I need is the most basic environment to allow me running programs and their GUIs (browsers, custom software etc), and access it with vnc How do I procced so I have the lightest gnome install possible? That's what I want to do, install gnome and access it through vnc. I'm aware of the number of other options I have.

I just ran Computer Janitor on my computer and I think it broke Synaptic. The program was cleaning up some files, but then it froze halfway through and I had to force it to quit. Since then, I can't open Synaptic package manager, the Ubuntu Software Center, nor Computer Janitor itself. When I do they either freeze and I have to force them to quite or they just don't show up on the screen, but they're stuck running in the background because System Monitor reports the processor is running at 100% and so I have to go in manually and kill the bad processes running in the background. Restarting doesn't change anything.Running Lucid Lynx on a HP dc7100, P4 3.2 Ghz, 2gb RAM.

Pretty much self explanatory:This morning I went into the update manager, and found a bunch of RPM package-management stuff such as rpm, alien, compiling tools, etc. What is up with this?I suspect they are setting the scenery for some big press release saying they now support RPM packages in Ubuntu too. Any ideas? (or better, inside info from someone who knows)

I have two routers. One is a Verizon ProLine and the other is a Dlink. My setup is myComputer-Dlink-ProLine-Internet. I'm trying to get port 80 requests from the outside, access my http server on myComputer. I tried port forwarding on both routers, but that didn't work. I also tried to make the ProLine treat the Dlink as a DMZ, but that still doesn't work.

I ran the Computer Janitor to clean things up a bit, and found that the list of "unused" items is pretty long, ~141.Among the items listed, I found Maxima, Pari-GP and Gnuplot, which are used by Sage, which I use all the time.Is this possibly a mistake? I'm currently using a binary form of Sage, rather than the one available via apt, so maybe these aren't currently being used? Also listed were cpython, ipython and a lot of python-*; does that seem right?

I use a specific PS1 prompt that I like. I share a few logins with other other people on a few different servers. I was wondering if there was a way to specify in my local bash profile a remote prompt or any other way other then copy and pasting each time I remote in.

I have a Genius K627 Keyboard with Power, Sleep and Wake buttons. ACPI is unsupported on my computer, but it can turn off its power supply when the system halts (PM is ok). I would like to bind the Power key on the keyboard to execute the /sbin/halt command. What I already know is that I can specify an event in inittab (kbrequest) that would execute a command. What I don't know how I can make my system receive pressing Power button as a kbrequest. The scancodes of Power button on the keyboard (by showkey): 0x74 0xf4
This is the line I was talking about in my inittab:
Code:
ce:12345:kbrequest:/sbin/halt
I think I should edit /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz but don't know how I could insert this scancode into it.

I have fifteen Audio CDs - an Audiobook - that I haven't used in ages.
I would like to pass them on, but before doing that, I want to check whether they still work flawlessly.
Is there a Windows or Linux program that I can use to quality test a CD? Is possible, with a detailed explanation of any errors it may find, and whether they will cause problems listening to the CD?

I keep a backup of a bunch of files on a flash drive, so that whenever I change distributions I can just restore all my Android stuff (saves on re-downloading everything). One of these is the Android SDK.
In my ~/.bashrc I add the paths to some executables in the SDK, only if the directory exists, and only if the path is not already in $PATH. For the Android NDK this works fine, but for the SDK I get this:
Code:
snfo@snfo:~$ adb devices
bash: /home/snfo/Android/sdk/platform-tools/adb: No such file or directory
snfo@snfo:~$ ls -F /home/snfo/Android/sdk/platform-tools/adb
/home/snfo/Android/sdk/platform-tools/adb*
Everything else is fine though, just that one path is causing trouble.
Now, I've saw something similar to this before whenever you move an executable from one place to another. If you don't re-source your bash config it will continue to keep looking wherever it used to be located. But I've never moved these files.

Basically I need to rename a bunch of .doc files using the for-structure and the mv command (w/ wildcards) in bash. I guess this would be a bit easier if I'd use the rename command, but since this is a school assignment of sorts I need to use for & mv. The .doc files are named "1filename.doc", "2filename.doc" etc. And I've got to rename them to "aaa_1filename.doc", "aaa_2filename.doc", "aaa_3filename.doc" and so on. Tried to dabble quite a bit with the for and mv commands, basically just got a bunch of errors. Every damn time. For 2 hours. The most common error was "mv: missing destination file operand after ..."

I have an rsnapshot backup that I need to move off of a corrupt Linux file system. I need to preserve the internal hardlinks. I've tried rsync -H and using a newer rsync and neither preserve the hardlinks on OS X.
I tried to get rsync -H working and I've isolated it to the file system mounted. I can preserve hard links copying locally (HFS to HFS) but it doesn't preserve when I try to rsync off of a SMB file system mount or AFP file system mount. Is there some mount option solution to getting OS X rsync to obey -H?
