Fedora Networking :: Configuring Wireless Connectivity?

Oct 11, 2010

May I please have some help configuring wireless connectivity?I just moved and went from connecting to a LAN infrastructure to connecting with a wireless cable modem. The modem is dual-purpose, it has two ports, one for an Ethernet cable, and an access point for a wireless connection. The ISP is CableOne. My laptop, which I use most often, is wireless capable, and I want to use the wireless feature. The laptop is running Fedora 13 KDE, with a VirtualBox virtual drive running WinXP.

I have used NetworkManager to create a wireless connection and name it. I have also used WPA encryption for this because I don't want anybody else using my bandwidth. Moreover, I have tried no encryption and WEP, all to no avail.

Fedora Installation :: Configuring Grub To Work With MS Windows 7 And XP?

Mar 18, 2010

I didn't get any responses to my question yesterday about grub with multiple disks

By "best," I don't mean with the most technical detail about each and every option. Instead, I'm looking for a guide that provides a step-by-step instructions about how to do some of the more common tasks, e.g.: configuring grub to work with MS Windows 7 and XP how to reinstall the MBR with grub after MS Windows' install program overwrites the MBR reinstalling the MBR from Fedora's LiveCD (without going through the whole install process) because I can't boot to my hard drive. configuring grub to work with multiple OS on separate hard drives

Again, I'm looking for a guide that starts with the basics about how to create a configuration file and write it to the MBR.

General :: Configuring Wireless On A Toshiba Portege R835?

May 30, 2011

I am a linux newbie trying to get the wifi setup on my Toshiba Portege R835. It is running an Intel WiMAX/Wifi Link 6050 Series (rev 5f) wifi card, and I am running ubuntu 10.04. From the ui under wireless networks it says "device not ready"

I tried running ifconfig and it only shows lo, but if I do ifconfig -a it shows me a wireless card listed under wlan0. I tried running sudo ifconfig wlan0 up But it gave me an error: SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory I also looked in lib/firmware and do in fact have iwlwifi-6050-5.ucode listed in there. Unfortunately, I am really not sure how to attack the problem from here.

I should also mention that the wired connections also do not work, so anything I need to download has to be downloaded from a windows boot and burned to a CD to transfer (making the problem much more difficult to solve!)

Ubuntu Networking :: Configuring Wireless NIC - Compatible Drivers Available?

Feb 12, 2011

I am looking to reinstall Ubuntu on my desktop computer, in a dual-boot configuration. The system I am installing to should prove no hassle, but my biggest concern is my wireless card. It's a D-Link DWA-510 wireless card. Checking the D-Link website, they do not seem to have Linux-specific drivers available for that model, so I am wondering if there are compatible drivers available in Ubuntu?

I been a windows guy forever, and wanted to make the switch. Anyways, I am hoping to do a wireless wake-on-lan from a windows box. I have an older laptop that has a dead screen and I am trying to use it as a server. So, I want to be able to VNC the linux box from my vista machine. I think that's going to be straight forward. But, the linux machine doesn't have a builtin wireless card, so I am using a USB wireless deal. If I let the laptop hibernate/sleep after being idle, can I wake from my vista box over my network?

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Much Slower In FC12/13 Than In Windows

Jun 11, 2010

"Dell 1525 WLAN PCIe card with11n mini-Card & external antenna" wireless card. It got recognized fine by FC12, but it was rather slow. I had read that life would be better in FC13 with the new kernel. After a long wait, I upgraded to FC13 yesterday.

It seems that the wireless is indeed faster. However, it it clearly a lot slower than under Windows 7 (it is a dual boot PC). My test is simply to play say Hulu in full screen: under Windows it looks fine, under FC13 it plays in slow motion.

General :: Install Wireless Driver From Windows?

Oct 27, 2010

I've got a Atheros AR9285 wireless card. I'd like to install the driver so I can access the internet, but I cannot install it without installing the driver to access the internet. See the problem?

Fortunately, I've got a Windows partition set up that can access the internet. Hence this post. How can I go about installing the driver?

Where can I download the driver from? Where should I put it on my hard drive? What command do I use to install the driver?

Edit:

I'm on a gateway laptop. I know I can't install the drive from within windows. I'm asking which driver to download and what command installs the driver from within Linux.

Edit2:

I can't use LAN in this case.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get Wireless Network Adapter To Be Read By 'Windows Wireless Drivers'

Nov 24, 2010

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).

1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal
