Debian Configuration :: Configuring Wireless Network With Rt2870sta Driver?
May 14, 2011
I've been following this guide for squeeze: [URL] After getting the wireless-tools and firmware-ralink packages installed with no internet, I managed to installthe driver using modprobe rt2870sta (the 4th step). With the module loaded and the device plugged in (a RangePlusWireless Network USB Adapter with the WUSB100v2 chipset), iwconfig returned something like
[code]....
and then ifconfig wlan0 up returned ERROR while getting interface flags: no available device

First time user who has just picked up a nice old Sony netbook to give Debian a try on. Only problem is, this little thing doesn't come with any form of Ethernet card or port, and has to rely on a USB D-link DWA 140 B1 Rev Dongle. This device identifies itself as the Type RT2870 device and when i do "lsusb", it comes out as RALink RT2870. Running the CD install of Lenny, Kernel 2.6.26-2-686, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get this damn Wireless card working.
The Wiki tells me to look into Upping the kernel to 2.6.32, which unfortunately requires some form of internet access for the backports Also consulted and tried (unsuccessfully, the make command would not run properly) this guy's advice: [URL].... Do any of you kind people have any advice or things for me to try to finally figure out how to get this little laptop online?

Alright, every time I boot or shutdown my routing box, it hangs at configuring and deconfiguring network interfaces. Below is my interfaces file. I see no errors or warnings in my log and I am running a pure kernel, not tainted with proprietary drivers. All of my hardware is 100% supported.

As above, my wheezy 32bit hangs at boot. the last few lines displayed are
Code: Select allMounting local filesystems...done.
Activating swapfile swap...done.
Cleaning up temporary files...
Setting kernel variables ...done.
Setting up resolvconf...done.
Configuring network interfaces...
[Code] ....
I removed the files from /etc/network/interfaces.d/ just in case. i still can't boot up.
Resolved (I think) as on this post: [URL] ....

I'm trying to install the driver for mi wireless card. The instructions say that to build the tar.gz file, I have to:
# mkdir hybrid_wl
# cd hybrid_wl
# tar <path>/hybrid-portsrc.tarhybrid-portsrc-x86_64.tar.gz
The third step i don't understand. I want the folder of the driver to be located in a folder inside home called "Programas" so what I did was to open the terminal, went su, and then did cd Programas. Then I followed instructions 1 and 2, but I don't know what to put where it says <path>.

I'm attempting to get a Realtek 0bda:8176 wireless usb adapter (lsusb gives: Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.) running with my Debian Server, I researched and found that the RTL8192CE driver is required for my adapter but when I run make install I get this error:

Apparently, the wireless adapter Realtek 8171 uses the rtl8192se driver, which is currently available only as source from Realtek's website. Is building a driver equal to building a package? Should I follow the same cautions, say these ones?

I'm running Debian wheezy on a Toshiba NB505 and I've noticed that the wireless connectivity can be painfully slow at times. I know it's not our home network because my desktop flies (running Windows).Currently, I have the driver from this guide installed. I went to Realtek's site to download the latest driver for this wireless card (RTL8188CE, the Linux/UNIX version) thinking maybe this more up-to-date driver would operate better than the one used in the guide above. Is there a possible way to install this driver, or should I just stick with the current driver I'm using from the guide above?

I've been in a difficult situation since we're having only wifi and there is no way to connect my laptop to the internet via a LAN cable.
Debian's packages don't support my wireless card. However this one works: [URL]
Is there any way to install this driver for the Installer to connect to the internet while installing?
I don't know what exactly to do when the Installer ask for my network driver so that I can use it.

I have a tenda wireless adaptor running on 11.04 natty. The USB id is: 148F 3070
Using the already installed drivers rt2800usb it can connect to all 13 channels but is very flaky, transfers slowing and stopping regularly. The rt2870sta driver is a lot more stable, but it will only connect to channels 1-11, but I need to use channel 13 due to massive wifi congestion on other channels...
I've tried iwpriv but it says there are no ioctls for the device.
Is there any way to get the installed driver rt2870sta to scan and connect to channel 13?
I've also tried to install the latest drivers from the ralink website: rt2870sta says it can see all 14 channels, but fails to scan. I also tried rt3070 driver but I cannot insmod as there are errors...

For the past week or so, I've had my wireless connection disconnect and reconnect at seemingly random intervals. It can be anywhere from every minute to every hour, whether I'm using the network or not. I don't recall installing anything that could affect this. I'm fairly certain this isn't a hardware issue, since I haven't had any problems when using my Windows partition. I'm using a D-Link USB adapter (DWA-171).
Code: Select alljp@pyrog:~$ more /etc/*-release

My wireless network is down. I got thinkpad x120e, chipset: Realtek RTL8188CE, driver: rtl819ce.
Here is what I did so far:
upgraded to 2.6.38-bpo.2-686
installed firmware-linux-nonfree
Added the firmware file from the repo since it's not yet packaged in firmware-realtek and reloaded the module.
'iwlist sc' shows: 'wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down'
'dmesg |tail -20' shows:
rtl8192ce:rtl92c_download_fw():<0-0> Failed to request firmware!
firmware 0000:04:00.0: firmware_loading_store: vmap() failed
I also tried the following commands:
ifdown wlan0 ; ifup wlan0
ifconfig wlan0 up
Relevant bug: [URL]
Step by step, in case someone is interested:
add to sources.list: deb [URl] squeeze-backports main
aptitude update
sudo aptitude -t squeeze-backports install linux-image-2.6.38-bpo.2-686
install this package: [URL]
get the first file: [URL]
add to driver:
mkdir -p /lib/firmware/rtlwifi
mv rtlwifi_rtl8192cfw.bin /lib/firmware/rtlwifi
modprobe -r rtl18192ce; modprobe rtl18192ce; dmesg | tail -20

I am currently using Debian Testing, managing my wireless connection with NetworkManager and the Gnome nm-applet. Both have just been updated: network-manager from 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 to 0.8.2-6 and network-manager-gnome from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-4.On installation of the new packages, I have no problems. However, on a reboot, I can no-longer connect to any wireless connection. I am not prompted on start-up for the password to unlock the Gnome keyring and when I left-click on the nm-applet icon and then click on a network to connect to it, nothing happens.I do not think this is a driver or NetworkManager daemon problem. If I run "nmcli dev wifi" or left-click on the applet icon, NetworkManager seems to scan for wireless networks properly and returns a list including the one I wish to connect to.

I upgraded from lenny to squeeze on a notebook and I can no longer connect to the wireless network. The computer is an LG notebook and the network card is ralink rt2860. I am using Gnome and NetworkManager. The wireless key is WEP hex. It was working fine with lenny till before the upgrade. After the upgrade, the network card stopped working. So, I checked
$ lspci|grep Network
08:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2860
Then I reinstalled the driver with apt-get install firmware-ralink wireless-tools Then the network manager tray started working again and saw the network, but cannot connect. It was trying to connect but timed out and kept asking for the password. It is the correct password. I tried deleting the old connection and recreated a new one in the nm. But still does not work.

I'd like configuring NTP service on my Lenny Debian client to retrieve time from my local NTP server, so I thought to configure /etc/ntp.conf and to insert into crontab this command 'ntpd -qg', which is indicated in man. Can I run ntpd service to synchronize time for my client, avoiding to listen on port 123, beacuse my scope is to alignment time on client and to not give service to others, for this scope there is ntp server !

About configuring my sources.list file.
The default file was:
To which I have added this: deb [url] stable all
Today I decided to include again Debian Volatile and discovered that it doesn't exist anymore and that I can get the same packages using this line: deb [url] squeeze-updates main
And the first question is: is this the same than debian-security?
Then, I decided to use [url] to make things less confused, and this was the output:
The first line is Ok. The second line, I guest it's the same than my second line. But, the third, is something different. So, the main question is: what is the difference between squeeze-proposed-updates and squeeze-updates? Are those repos completely separated from squeeze/updates (in security.debian.org)? And, what else should I add to have an always up-to-date and secure system?

I just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".How do I get authorized?
Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out. Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.

I'm having trouble with my keyboard functions on my netbook (eeePC 1005HA running squeeze/sid - specific build being the one available on December 23rd 2009 - hasn't been updated since installation) - specifically, some of the function keys seem to be off - i.e. when pressing Fn+key, only some actually work. The specific ones I'm having trouble with are:
Fn+F10 (mute)Fn+F11 (vol. down)Fn+F12 (vol. up)
As far as I can remember, they've never worked; at first I thought it wouldn't be an issue for me, having the volume panel, but the more time goes on, the more annoying it's becoming. Also, as it was a M$ machine at purchase, it has a Windoze key on it, which I'd like to configure to actually do something useful - preferably to open the main menu, if possible - but have so far failed to find any guides on how to do it. (Have Googled on multiple occasions, to no avail.)

First off I am aware ureadahead isn't in the repos, but thought this forum would fit the best regardless. I installed upstart, then the deb package on packages.ubuntu.com and rebooted. The /var/lib/ureadahead folder exists but there are no .pack files in that folder. I tried running "service ureadahead start" but it said "Service failed to start". Anyone used ureadahead on Debian?

I'm new to openSUSE and as a matter of fact, to linux too. I've got a Linksys WUSB600N wireless adapter which used to work fine with some live versions of linux that I was testing out before moving onto suse... Each time, upon booting using live CDs, I used to copy the driver I had downloaded from:
SpeedShare - Download rt2870-kernel-2.6.24-nemesis.tar.bz2
Then 'make' and get into the driver's os/linux directory to load the driver using 'insmod rt2870sta.ko' Now, upon doing a 'make' and 'make install', followed by the 'insmod rt2870sta.ko', I get the error saying:
insmod: error inserting 'rt2870sta.ko': -1 Invalid module format
I tried doing 'modprobe -rv rt2870sta' and didn't get any error messages. But while doing 'modprobe -v', this error shows up: insmod /lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2870sta.ko
FATAL: Error inserting rt2870sta (/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2870sta.ko): Invalid module format

This time I'm attempting to get Xorg up, and running. I've done a minimal Debian install from a network install disc. I used aptitude the install the following, with the dependencies configured automatically I assume:
- xorg
- openbox
- xserver-xorg-video-n (Where n is your graphics card family)
I've rebooted, and no X. I've typed in 'xstart', with no result. I've even typed in 'Xorg' at the CLI where it loads to a black screen, and hangs. I had to power off the PC by holding down the power button. Is there something I'm missing to configure/run it for the first time?
