Fedora Installation :: How To Get Connection Working To Use Internet On F10
Mar 27, 2009
I just set up my computer to dual boot Windows XP Home and Fedora 10. After installation, on Windows, the internet works just fine (since I'm able to compose this message). However, the internet connection on Fedora does not work.
Here are the details:
I'm connected via a cable modem only.
I have an Ethernet cable connecting my modem and PC.
I've tried looking info up online about the issue and many people say to do an ifconfig -a to get the MAC Address and so forth. How to get the connection working to use the internet with Fedora?

i installed a linux flavor (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu 11.04, and then Linux Mint).. They all gave this same problem about the wired network (see the picture). The connection seems to be fine but i can't connect to internet or even to my router. Which is weird since it knows my router IP 192.168.1.79. Wasted the whole night trying to figure it out but i just can't understand why. I have a separate partition on this computer to run Win7 also and confirmed that the network connection is working.

Sorry title should have been F13 installation without internet I am having a P4, 1GB ram, 80 GB machine. Since yesterday I am having some funny issues on this machine. i have fedora 12 installed on this machine.
My mouse suddenly stop working, or the cursor changes from pointer type to a line cursor and basicaly the mouse just stops clicking. I am plannning to install fedora 13 on this machine. Have downloaded the 5 iso (
CD images).
Would choosing the option upgrade on existing Linux partition do the job? Is there a chance I loose my data files when the upgrade is done? I dont want to reinstall programs like java, eclipse, tomcat etc that I done in fedora 12. I only intend using the CD's as I dont have a lot of bandwidth and a fast internet connection to use yum.

I just installed Fedora 10 for the first time on my HP Pavillion desktop. Everything worked fine and I installed the first set of updates. Then I wanted to install KDE so I did that. Then it told me there were more recommended updates. After installing KDE, I started to install the updates and when I came back today the wired connection wasn't working

I plan to install F12 (Fedora-12-i386DVD.iso) in a location where there's no Internet connection, thus I'd like to previously download the updates in order to install them once completed the installation. How can i perform this ? can I download the updates that were released after F12 launch date from somewhere ? how should I tell yum or rpm to find them ?

I have Fedora 14 installed on my s/m with the default gnome desktop environment. Now, I want to install some KDE applications which I found to be very useful. I want to install KDE from fedora 14 DVD as my internet connection is very slow. It was a failure when I tried pointing the yum.repos.d/fedora.repo file to DVD to install using yum. Should I create a repository like what we do in RHEL to configure yum server(How to do it in fedora ???) Or is there any other method to install KDE repository on my system.

I've installed opensuse 11.2 on an old IBM thinkpad. The install went without a hitch and when I got to the desktop I inserted my Dlink DWL-G132 wireless USB adapter. Opensuse immediately recognised that a wireless device was attached and I could see my wireless network listed. I entered my WPA password and was able to connect to my routers configuration page by entering 192.168.0.1 in the URL bar of firefox. For some reason I am unable to navigate to any webpage. When I enter a URL firefox acts as though there is no internet connection. The only way I can get the internet on my laptop is to connect it to my router with a cable. I used a wired connection and ran the update utility thinking that perhaps an update would fix the issue but it did not. I know the adapter works because the laptop used to have windows xp installed and I could connect fine with that.
Does anyone here have any idea why I would be able to connect wirelessly to the routers configuration page but not to the internet? I appreciate any advice anyone may have.

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu machine. I would like to try it out for a few weeks at least, but networking is not working at all.
I somehow managed to find the network settings and it shows no connections, wired or wireless. When I log out and log back in with gnome, my wireless gets connected automatically.

I'm using a WUSB54GC network adapter to connect to my home wireless network. My network was not visible, so I added it and it shows connected, but when I launch the browser, I can't get a connection. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4. All other computers on the network connect fine and I disabled my firewall to see if that made a difference.

I am fairly new on CentOS and am in the process of setting up a small home office network that shares Internet access through the Linux (CentOS) box.I have two network interface cards The Linux box is also the DHCP server. My challenge is to get the client machines to access the Internet! I have a PPP connection to the ISP. Essentially I followed these Instructions CENTOS REDHAT Internet Connection Sharing. Pretty straight forward but I am still not able to get clients to access the Internet. I defined the DNS server through DHCP (196.44.x.y). I assumed it has to do with default gateway and it is set as follows: on the Linx box the gateway is my ppp0 link. DHCP uses eth1 (LAN card) fixed IP as the gateway. All clients are reflecting this information. The firewall (iptables) is reflecting the FORWARDING and POSTROUTING rules as advised.
Is there a step I mioght have missed to get this working? I tried to Google but its not getting me far.

Ever since my BT Hub 2 has updated a few weeks ago I'm unable to connect to the internet either wireless or wired. I duel boot on my netbook with xp and duel boot my desktop PC with windows 7. None of the Ubuntus are able to connect, I have no problems with the windows side of things.
Has anyone any ideas on how to fix this until BT decide to fix the problem. Preferably a step to step guide as I have limited experience with Ubuntu. Im using Ubuntu 11.04.

I am trying to get a NetGear WNDA3100 working on another computer with ubuntu. I've searched and searched, but all the threads and answers say to install some ndiswrapper thing. One problem with that though- the desktop doesn't have any adapters at all, I'm trying to install the WNDA3100 just to get internet in the first place. I have no internet, cannot download and install anything, and I can't use any apps or commands that don't come with the default Ubuntu 10.04. Please help me out here!

I wouldn't be posting this if I hadn't tried very hard for the past week to do this on my own, but alas, I failed. I have this two configurations:
Desktop:
- Ubuntu 9.10
- Connected to the internet though a wireless card
- Connected to "Laptop" via wired network with a crossover cable
Laptop:
- Dell latitude
- Ubuntu 9.10
- Connected to "Dektop" via wired network with a crossover cable
The wired connection is working, both computers are able to ping each other, but I haven't managed to share internet, nor files. I have tried many different ways, from setting the wired network to "Shared to other computers" to this guide in the Ubuntu Wiki. The best I could get was for the connection to work by setting the IPs manually, whatever else I try results in either nothing or in a not-working connection.

I have been using my laptop as a development machine for a few months now, developing php/mysql applications, and testing them offline via the same laptop by pointing the browser to url.
But a few days ago, my url stopped working and I discovered that it will now only work if I have an active internet connection plugged in. Why has this happened and how to I fix my test server so localhost works with or without an internet connection via an ethernet cable.

I am setting up a Beowulf Cluster using CentOS 5.5. I have the head node with two NIC devices eth0 and eth1. eth0 is the one that is connected to the WAN while eth1 provides the internal LAN connection. I am trying to configure internet connection sharing with the slave nodes on the network so that I can update/install software as needed via ssh sessions using yum. I have set up the master node with the requisite changes to iptables to enable IPv4 forwarding. From my slave nodes I can ping ip address from the terminal, but my domain name resolution is not working. i.e. if I ping [URL] it can not resolve, but if I ping 74.125.224.50 (one of google's IP's) I can communicate with the machine without a problem. I also ran the configuration tool provided in the README section of the forum on the slave node and the master node. The links are:

I have no idea how I managed this, but I am able to connect to the internet but NetworkManager doesn't show any connection. This means that until I kill it, I cannot log in with Pidgin, because it is waiting for a connection.
Do I disable NetworkManager completely or do I try to make it recognize that I am connected to the Internet? If the latter, then how should I go about? (Please let me know which files I need to show you, because I know I've messed around with a couple).

After several hours of frustration to point of almost scrapping linux alltogether I was finally able to get my wireless networking to work in Linux Mint 6. I searched for hours and came up with several different suggestions that were supposed to fix my problem - NONE OF THEM WORKED! As a new linux user, I can completely understand why so many people try linux and then give up on it. It should not be so hard to get a wireless internet connection working.
Said another way - the people making distros should read these forums and see what difficulties are experienced and work on fixing them. In any event - I want to post my solution to the problem for my COMPAQ CQ60-211DX so that anyone else who wants to try linux on this model laptop will save a great amount of time. Here are the steps I took to get linux mint 6 to work on my laptop:
1. Open terminal window
2. Type - lspci | grep Atheros
3. Hit the enter key
If you see: Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
then these instructions WILL get your AR242x (AR5007) wireless card to work for you. Be warned - I tried everything I read including ndiswrapper, etc. - none of it worked! You will need to click the menu button go to all applications and then administration. From there, select hardware drivers and look for anything that has Atheros in it. CLICK DEACTIVATE! Now you will have to restart your computer. When it starts back up....

I recently bougt an Asus N61DA with Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, so I made the Ubuntu CD, just like it said. Then I inserted the CD and restarted the computer. I started the installer (ubuntu 10.10 64-bit) and chose the option where it says "install ubuntu alongside other operating systems", or something like that. So, the installation started, but then I lost the internet connection, and the installation stopped.I re-connected the computer, but the installation still wouldn't continue. I restarted the computer and then nothing happened. I've restarted it several times, but still nothing happens. I've inserted the Windows recovery CD, but it doesn't work

I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients. Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?
