I am very lost and would be happy for answers. My grpahics card is a ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card.

I'm using squeeze. I wanted to know how you could determine from the command line in tty1 (or tty2 through tty6) what the resolution was that text was being displayed at. Is there a way? I know that in grub, you're supposed to be able to go to the command line and type vbeinfo. I tried this and got some information, but somehow I think it doesn't always apply to the terminal after the computer has booted up.

I'm having problems to install SCST in Fedora 11.I'm not able to apply the kernel patch because there isn't a file called drivers/scsi/scsi_lib.c in the /usr/src/kernels/2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i868.PAE.Does anybody have an idea on how to proceed?

Infact I've seen the linux(ubuntu 11.04) for the first time today. I don't know anything about linux & i'm not able to install my nVidia 8600gt graphics driver. I've downloaded the .run file from here
[URL]
when I'm opening the .run file it's showing an error
"Could not open the file /home/f1/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-275.09.07.run.
gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character encoding from the menu and try again."
After trying for all day long I found this HOWTO

there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says
Current usage: Unknown
There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power.It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector.The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

My system has been crashing, and I think it may have something to do with Gnome since the crashes only occur when I'm using it. I checked the log file after a crash and it reported...
Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_map_unlock_path: assertion `entry != NULL && entry->lock_count > 0' failed
so I went to the Ubuntu launchpad and searched for it, and here it is. Someone has already submitted a patch and the bug status has been changed to "fix released."From reading the comments, I've learned the fix is only in Gnome 2.30, and Ubuntu 10.04 uses 2.28 (I think, maybe 2.26) (If it is possible to update to a new version of Gnome, please let me know). Luckily, someone also submitted a patch on the bug report as a temporary fix. Unfortunately, I don't know how to apply the patch. I couldn't find much information regarding it online, and the only stuff I did find applied to using Gnome's git hub.

I have a monitor with oversaturated red (HP LP2475w). I am able to apply ICC profile to various apps like GIMP and Firefox and Gnome. But I'd like to apply it to everything - because e.g. Flash animations in Firefox are rendered by Flash and don't use ICC. So, can I apply it to whole X?

Let's say you have this structure:
+ directory
-- file1
-- file2
-- file3 -> /tmp/file3
file3 is a link to another file3 somewhere else on the system.
Now let's say I chmod 777 the directory and all contents inside it. Does my file3 in /tmp receive those permissions? Also, let's say we have the same situation but reversed.
/tmp/file3 -> /directory/file3
If I apply the permissions on the file being linked to, how does that effect the link?

On my Ubuntu 11.04x64 server, I have service accounts running which do not log in and do not have home directories. These service accounts are responsible for running processes which are invoked as services.When these services created new files, I need them to be created with the permissions 664 (UMASK 002).I edited the /etc/profile umask setting to reflect this. I see that now my user account creates files which reflect this new umask setting, but the service accounts do not when I manually created files using their accounts (sudo -u serviceaccount touch newfile).

I'm trying to use a global variable to apply a condition within a script.
The idea is to use this variable set to e.g. 1 or 2 to run a different part of the script accordingly. I can set the global variable with e.g.
Code:
export WL0=1
run my part of script, increment it by 1 with e.g.
Code:
WL0=$((WL0+1))
but if I re-run the script my WL0 is still set to 1!
I've also tried to add an
export $WL0 at the very end of my script (after the math) but this doesn't change the global variable apparently.

my linux box the device node for my printer is by default setup as the following: crw-rw---- 1 root lp 189, 1 Apr 3 07:45 /dev/bus/usb/001/002 This causes cups to not print at all. The Hp backend (HPLIP) fails because of these permissions. How do I change it so that it's crw-rw--rw 1 root lp 189, 1 Apr 3 07:45 /dev/bus/usb/001/002. Ie I would like 666 file permission on that node.

I am running 6 servers on RHEL4.4 with oracle databases and application on HP ML370 hardware. Since initial installation, I have not applied any patch updates. I would like to start practising Patch Management and would like to know how to start and how to do it. For security reasons, I am not allowed to connect the servers to RHN or RHS hence will appreciate other options of acquiring patch updates in bundled form say on a monthly basis.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10, and it seems I'm unable to get the drivers for my graphics card. I know they exist, as I've downloaded them before (I switched back to Windows for a short period. Bad idea there. :/), and I know they work fine, but when I go to "System > Administration > Hardware Drivers" (where I've always gotten them from), they aren't there.
The only difference between this install and my old one, is that I used a USB drive to install, instead of a disk (I had run out).
Although I did have to change to boot order in the BIOS to get it to boot into the drive, I don't think that's the issue.

I have Solaris at my workplace. Currently Esm was configured.It's listing conflicting configurations against policy standards. Few of them are like usrid's/guid's of users are below 100 so I am planning to change it above 100. For eg. I have ops id for an operations team.If I change uid and group id of this particular user/group, do I have to just find files of that particular users/groups ownership and change it accordingly.Or else something elese I have to do. Will it affect any running applications owned by user/group whose ID I am going to change. Also there are few ids owned by applications whose secondary gid is 0, how do I proceed with those, as its very risky to change in prod environment.
