View 1 RepliesHow can I (as admin) find out when a certain user e.g. "karl" most recently logged in and most recently logged out of a system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have had this happening off and on, since I moved to Ubuntu 10.04, via clean install. I did pick EXT4, which is the only difference I can think of.
What happens is, 3 of my log files suddenly start filling fast with "Unknown" errors. The three files are kern.log messages and syslog. All three files will have about the same measurement of size. It can take a few weeks or it can speed along fairly fast and use up my free space of 6 GB. For instance, today, I blanked the three files and within the space of about 4 hours they grew to almost 2 GB each! I blanked them again and rebooted, and in 3 hours they only grew to 5 MB each.
Below is a sample which shows where the "unknown" errors start. The first such error is in BOLD so that it is easy to find. Once they start happening there is little else printed in the logs. Does anyone know how to track down what is happening and fix this?

When trying to run a program, from Gnome terminal, for a device connected to /dev/ttyS0 (COM1), I get a segmentation fault. I think the terminal may not want to leave the connection open for some reason. Do I first need to mount the device somehow?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIf the filesystem is mounted with noatime option does it influence find -atime behaviour? I tested and it looks that find is able to see access time but why should it if mounted with noatime? Or maybe it depends on the type of filesystem (I`m using XFS)?EDIT: Looks the answer is [URL]htmlIf a file system has been mounted with this option, reading accesses to the file system will no longer result in an update to the atime information associated with the file like we have explained above. The importance of the noatime setting is that it eliminates the need by the system to make writes to the file system for files which are simply being read. Since writes can be somewhat expensive, this can result in measurable performance gains. Note that the write time information to a file will continue to be updated anytime the file is written to.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to mount my CD Rom drive and got this response: "mount: can't find cdrom in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"
I did see the CD Rom drive briefly after I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 but I couldn't access the drive and when I logged back in.
Is there some file in Linux that enumerates and describes mount options for file systems like /etc/services describes ports?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a server that has a Fibre Channel mount that is having issues. When I can in this morning I found that it had switched to read only. Now looking through /var/log/messages I see that there are errors reported on the disk. I know that i will need to run fsck on it, but I do see lines about the device mapper failing for mpath0 first, which is the device which is mounted. I am wondering if someone can take a look and see if this is just a drive issue, or an issue with the fibre channel connection.

I am using 9.10 Karmic Koala Oct 2009 release. Gtkpod does not show my ipod touch, and I can not mount the ipod. I realise there were problems with the ipod touch syncing/mounting but gtkpod has the touch option, and I have all the files from synaptic for using an ipod touch. When I run gtkpod its just blank, no music files show up. If I click load ipod I get the error:

I have two mount points that used to work. I have them defined as cifs shares in fstab, and they map to a Windows machine, which I am able to ping from my Fedora machine, but for some reason I get a mount error 2, and the destination is not accessible. The man page doesn't really give any troubleshooting steps. Since I am mounting by IP address (which as I said has worked before), nothing has changed, although the IP address did change, which I updated in the fstab file to the new IP address (and since I have reserved this new IP address so it can't change again!)
I ran a test and shared a folder from another one of my computers, and added a line in fstab to auto-mount that, and I get a "permission denied" error 13, which is different than the error 2 I get on the other 2 shares. What should I be looking for as far as actual connectivity between the machines? I have verified that the windows machine is on and I can access the same shares from another computer.
Update: Added the host and IP address to my hosts file, and replaced the IP address with the name, and still get the same error. Also, the share name has a space in it, so I replace that with a "40" space character (which worked in the past). I tried replacing that with an actual space, and putting quotes around the URL, but then I get a "bad URL" error.

I've been mounting our windows network by opening nautilus and typing in the address bar:
smb://<servername>/share
and I am prompted to log in, all is fine.
however, I need to use some apps where I need to pick the folder from a file list, which I can't get to work with the above connection.
I then created the following line in my fstab file:
Code:
//<servername>/<share> /mnt/fileserver cifs credentials=/home/<username>/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0
This appears to mount correctly, however there are some filenames on the server with the bullet character() in their name, and by mounting via fstab, the bullet shows as a question mark, but mounting from nautilus shows the bullet.
Anyway I can mount with fstab, and have all characters show properly in the filename?
In this case what is the return value of mount. I want to run e2fsck only when either mount fails or mount succeeded but with errors . Is there some way to detect this situatin "mounting fs with errors" in code/script .
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with an old laptop I have. It had windows xp on it, and after loaning it to a friend it wouldn't boot up. I decided to try linux, but I'm having problems loading it. If I try to run the liveCD it halts because its unable to mount root. If I try to install it just doesnt work well (will stop at different points).
So I figured a mem test would help. I am running the test, currently its on test #6, but it is coming up with a ton of errors. Does this mean I need to replace the RAM?
If so, this is the computer I have. Will this RAM work? I've been out of the tech game for awhile so not really following hardware anymore, and just want to double check.
Below is the oneliner that I am using to exclude all of "." hidden directories within the same directory.
Code:
cd find . -depth ( -wholename ./.* ) -prune -o -print | cpio -oav > /media/caca/extract/full$date.cpio
it works fine but when I extract the files from the full$date.cpio archive it appears to have worked but gives me permission errors:
Code:
cd /media/caca/extract
cpio -ivd < full061411.cpio

I am trying to login to a redhat server via VNC. This used to work until I reloaded the box. Although I had previously logged in directly to the box, then I could vnc to it remotely. The service is running, netstat states the ports are open and listening.I can ssh to the box, and ran the usual commands to start the services. So my question is. Do I need to have a local user logged in before I can VNC, if so how can I do that via the command line.If this is not required for a local user to be logged in, what am I missing. Other than VNC, which other services do I need to start.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using CentOS 5.3. After booting up, where can I find the log file that contains if all services where successfully loaded or not? For example when computer boots you get a list of start services and they can be OK or FAILED. Is there a log file where this information is kept? I had a look in the following directory /var/log/ but not sure which one will contain the informaiton that I need.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I'm logged on to another host (e.g via ssh), how do I connect to the XServer of that machine (same user is logged in and is running a desktop (gnome))?
You may ask way I wish to do that: There are commands that don't open an X-Window, e.g. xinput, xhost, etc.. and there are situations where you want to run them from remote.
I just logged in as root and used rm -r on a file directory, but is this the same thing as deleting it?

I would like to have this script running even when I am not logged in. At the moment it runs but only when I am logged in. I logged as denis and in terminal (su root) and edited crontab as shown below, what do I need to change or setup to have this script run when no-one is logged in the computer. backup script:
cd /home/denis/Documents
tar -czvPf /home/denis/Backups/docsbackups_$(date +%Y%b%d_%HH%MM).tar.gz /home/denis/Documents

Possible Duplicate: Automatically start VNC server on startup I have a Linux server at home, and by default no-one is logged in to that box. I'd like to establish a remote desktop connection to it with VNC but this fails, unless I log in first physically.
