Ubuntu :: Can Running E2fsck On Live System Cause Errors ?

Jun 29, 2011

We have an old server running, and I decided to run fsck.ext3 -n on the disk to check it (while it was running). Turns out it reports lots of errors - not a good thing.

The weird thing is that when booting up a rescue cd and running fsck.ext3 on it, it says there are no problems with it. The filesystem is marked clean. Forcing a check with -f turns up nothing.

Now, when booting it from disk, fsck complains about an unclean file system that has not been checked for like 50000 days (obviously an error). Running e2fsck -n /dev/sda2 turns up errors again - not necessarily the same ones as the last time.

This makes me wonder: Can running e2fsck on a mounted file system cause errors? I ran with -n which is not supposed to do anything, just doing a read-only check. On the other hand, I heard checking a live file system might throw erros since the files being checked might change while bign checked, thus causing false positives.

Can the old version of e2fstools (1.38, approx 2005) mean non-existing errors are shown? Both the rescue cd and the system use this version.

In any case - why would the file system report errors on boot-up when the rescue cd just said it was ok? It should have been marked clean by now.

For laughs, I shut down the system and booted Knoppix which has a quite recent version (1.41.12, May 2010) of e2fstools. It showed no errors on the file system.

What do you think - are there errors or not on the file system?

The system is actually running Suse, but this is not about Suse specific things - just general Linux tools. And I use Ubuntu personally.

If I ping my gateway the Windows lappy does in in 1 ms but the Linux in 20ms. iwconfig reports errors under Rx invalid crypt, tx excessive retries and huge numbers under invalid misc, and nothing on the rest.

The router is encrypted with WEP and iwconfig reports the correct key.

CentOS 5 Networking :: NIC Drops Packets / But Reports No Errors

Jul 24, 2009

I've got an odd one, running the CentOS 5.3 kernel, I'm experiencing lost packets on one of the two NICs when tested with ping. In this particular case, it's the internal NIC that causes the problem, pings from the CentOS machine to the public network over the external NIC never loses packets.(internet)<-->CentOS<--> (LAN) <--> desktop

- CentOS can ping the internet with no packet loss
- CentOS loses packets when pinging the desktop(s)
- Desktops lose packets when pinging the CentOS box
- Taking the LAN switch out of the equation still results in lost packets
- When the LAN NIC on the CentOS box "acts up", all desktops start losing packets

I've swapped out the NIC a few times for different makes/models, and I'm still getting lost packets to/from the internal network. So, I'm thinking that there's something squirrely going on higher up in the network stack. But evidently, not enough to log anything to the console or into the log files. At the moment, I'm leaning towards it being an issue with the nForce 750a SLI chipset. But it's odd that it only affects the LAN card and not the WAN card. I've even swapped the positions of the two NICs, and the problem persists on the LAN card. The other possibility is that iptables is eating packets silently, but in a random fashion.

Debian :: Tool For Squid Reports (not SARG) - Generate Less Amount Of Files - Optimal Is To Save Reports To The Database

May 9, 2011

I got the following task from my boss. I have to find out if there is some alternative tool for create reports from Squid except SARG. Now, we use SARG, but my boss told to me, that the main problem of SARG is, that SARG generate huge amount files, which cause problems during migration our servers. He told to me the following condition for change of current tool (SARG):

* standard package of Debian
* generate less amount of files, optimal is to save reports to the database

So I would like to ask you if you know about some tool (I can not find some by google)... and the best would be if you told to me some practical experiences.

In suse community site it says something about installing from packman. But this only adds kde3-k3b and I dont want that. Is there anything I can do to use mp3 with my kde4-k3b?

Security :: X Freezing, Rkhunter Warns About Adore Rootkit?

Mar 8, 2010

Something really nasty happened to my Arch Linux just now and I don't know why. I was switching through Xfwm4 themes when suddenly Kate crashed and brought down X with it. I started X back up, and Xfwm got hung up, I had to switch to another VT and run "killall X". I tried replacing xfwm4 with pekwm (but still with xfce4-panel) in .xinitrc, same thing. I deleted all my Xfce config files and tried again. The mouse didn't even move. The keyboard didn't work, not even the keyboard light would come on and I couldn't switch to another VT. I was forced to use the Reset button and hope it wouldn't ruin my hard drive.

It booted up fine, I purged all xfce4-related packages just in case while still in CLI mode, and I ran "xinit /usr/bin/pekwm" and I got into a working GUI. I closed a window and X froze again! The window's close button just stayed presses after I let go of it! I killed X from another VT. So I installed and ran "rkhunter" form AUR (I wonder why they don't have it in the arch repos, it's so much better that chkrootkit) and it warned that I might have Adore Rootkit. What should I do? If it helps, I recently installed a few packages from the Arch Linux AUR, including "ooc-git", "ooc-gtksourceview-git", "libpng12", and "virtualbox_bin".

What could the cause of the message output by gdb possibly be? Reading some tutorials, I've learn the flat memory model is used in linux. So, in particular, I needn't care about the DS segment register.

Also, line 7 in the listing above, suggests nasm is assuming 32-bit addressing and so, I think it is using the flat memory model.

Server :: SAN Mount Going To Read Only - FS Errors

Mar 28, 2011

I have a server that has a Fibre Channel mount that is having issues. When I can in this morning I found that it had switched to read only. Now looking through /var/log/messages I see that there are errors reported on the disk. I know that i will need to run fsck on it, but I do see lines about the device mapper failing for mpath0 first, which is the device which is mounted. I am wondering if someone can take a look and see if this is just a drive issue, or an issue with the fibre channel connection.

Fedora Servers :: Mount Errors From Fstab - Used To Work?

Aug 19, 2011

I have two mount points that used to work. I have them defined as cifs shares in fstab, and they map to a Windows machine, which I am able to ping from my Fedora machine, but for some reason I get a mount error 2, and the destination is not accessible. The man page doesn't really give any troubleshooting steps. Since I am mounting by IP address (which as I said has worked before), nothing has changed, although the IP address did change, which I updated in the fstab file to the new IP address (and since I have reserved this new IP address so it can't change again!)

I ran a test and shared a folder from another one of my computers, and added a line in fstab to auto-mount that, and I get a "permission denied" error 13, which is different than the error 2 I get on the other 2 shares. What should I be looking for as far as actual connectivity between the machines? I have verified that the windows machine is on and I can access the same shares from another computer.

Update: Added the host and IP address to my hosts file, and replaced the IP address with the name, and still get the same error. Also, the share name has a space in it, so I replace that with a "40" space character (which worked in the past). I tried replacing that with an actual space, and putting quotes around the URL, but then I get a "bad URL" error.

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount Cifs With Charset Errors

Nov 18, 2010

I've been mounting our windows network by opening nautilus and typing in the address bar:

smb://<servername>/share

and I am prompted to log in, all is fine.

however, I need to use some apps where I need to pick the folder from a file list, which I can't get to work with the above connection.

I then created the following line in my fstab file:

Code:
//<servername>/<share> /mnt/fileserver cifs credentials=/home/<username>/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

This appears to mount correctly, however there are some filenames on the server with the bullet character() in their name, and by mounting via fstab, the bullet shows as a question mark, but mounting from nautilus shows the bullet.

Anyway I can mount with fstab, and have all characters show properly in the filename?

Ubuntu :: Errors After Mem Test - Run The LiveCD It Halts Because Its Unable To Mount Root ?

Mar 25, 2010

I am having problems with an old laptop I have. It had windows xp on it, and after loaning it to a friend it wouldn't boot up. I decided to try linux, but I'm having problems loading it. If I try to run the liveCD it halts because its unable to mount root. If I try to install it just doesnt work well (will stop at different points).

So I figured a mem test would help. I am running the test, currently its on test #6, but it is coming up with a ton of errors. Does this mean I need to replace the RAM?

If so, this is the computer I have. Will this RAM work? I've been out of the tech game for awhile so not really following hardware anymore, and just want to double check.

Debian Programming :: Correcting SRT File OCR Errors

Mar 2, 2012

I've generated some srt subtitle files using gocr from pgm files used in DVD's. The ocr program gets confused between lower case L and upper case i and sees them as the same thing. This results in words with capital i's in them instead of lower case L.

What is the best way to automate the correction without a spell checker? I tried sed, but it's difficult to tell between the i's that you want and those that need changing. I figured that any word that consists solely of capital i's is ok, e.g. Roman Numerals, but any capital i not at the beginning of a word needs changing.
