I have to replace the HDD in my laptop. I want to install LINUX on it because I don't want to buy windows. I need to find a tutorial with step by step to follow to download LINUX to another computer, burn it to a cd(s), and then use those to load my new HDD in my laptop. Any one know where I can find this tutorial? I'm 60 and not very techie but I can follow a good set of instructions.

View 10 Replies View RelatedFirst I go to the following URL to download the latest version of VLC Player, which I greatly prefer to Totem or any other standard Linux video/audio player: http://www.fileguru.com/Movie-Player/download. After I click on the "Download" link, a new window appears which asks me if I want to 1) Open with Archive Manager (default) or 2) Save File. There is a drop down arrow next to the first choice which only gives "Other..." as the only other choice. Well, if I choose the first option, the download appears as an .exe file in the "Downloads" window.
A window with "Download Error" in its Title Bar appears with the following message in it: "/tmp/VLC_Player_Setup-3.exe could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences." I don't even know yet how to even open up an .exe file in Linux, despite repeated research.
Microsoft Expression Web Software
Microsoft .NET 4
I download Microsoft .NET (from the link below) in order to install Web Expression software. But as soon as I use wine to install .NET, I run into an error & it stops. It's a typical Microsoft Windows kind of error message that asks if you want to send the result or problem back to their website, & I just click on yes. I tried several websites, including the following for downloading .NET onto Ubuntu. I don't have Windows.

I have installed things off wine before. Wine is working. But .NET is not.
I just changed mobos and now have a 64-bit machine. My old mobo was 32-bit, so that's the version of Ubuntu I have. When I go to download the latest version of Ubuntu, the only choice I'm given is to download another 32-bit version. How do I download a 64-bit version of Ubuntu from a 32-bit system?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with internet access with amd64 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny). I have another computer with NO internet access with i386 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny).I want to download some packages for the i386 computer using the amd64 computer. So far, the only way I can see to do this is to use dpkg-architecture to temporarily change to i386 on the internet computer, run aptitude with the download-only option to retrieve the packages I need with all suitable dependencies, then switch the internet computer back over to amd64.
I can't imagine I'm the only person who ever needed to do this, and yet I've had no luck finding any advice. The method I described seems rather awkward - is there a more elegant solution?
I apologize to the membership, I realize now the absurdity of this subject. Having now studied the online repository search functions closer, I see it appears packages are automatically retrieved with all necessary dependencies. As such, it is not necessary to use apt and its various functions to do the job.

View 2 Replies View Relatedhow to update my system online (for example my firefox 3.0 to 3.5) but i can't figure out how this possibly works. I tried the "online update" using Yast2 but apparently (according to Yast) there is nothing at all to be patched on my system. I tried to click on the Firefox-3.5.5 rpm in the repository web-interface and open it using "install software" but the process aborts because of unresolved dependencies. Is there an easy way to update software without having to download/install every dependency manually?
