I have been trying to configure a cyber cafe timer and I have so far tried Mkahawa and CCL. However the problem is following the instructions since most of them require you to be conversant with the Gnome commands..

can anyone advise me as to which distribution would be best suited for a cyber cafe: for client and for the server. I'm having trouble installing cafe con leche on my 10.04 LTS because some repositories are unavailable.

My friend and I are helping a local internet cafe transition their public computers (and possibly servers at some point) to run on free software (after many bad virus experiences). Currently, they are using Antamedia Internet Caffe, with the server program running on a POS system that for the time being still needs to run Windows. We played with ZenCafe a little, but ideally we need something that runs in kiosk mode, allowing the user to browse the web, instant message and word process.

I've got my netbook set up so that I can run a SOCKS proxy via my desktop machine. This works fine at home, but I'm wondering what happens at an internet cafe with public wifi.
Specifically, the connection needs initially to be set up with an ordinary direct internet connection so that I can log in to the cafe's router. I'm concerned that when I then set the network proxy to SOCKS host, the router will cease to recognise me and will disconnect me. This particular detail doesn't seem to have been covered in any instructions that I've seen (maybe I haven't looked hard enough).

I am planning to start a new business where I will get satellite internet as my backbone @ however I need have some questions since my company will be "fully open source" or " Linux-ish" first of all I would like to know which billing software is the best for the job , I came a cross "Optigold isp " and it seems awsome in its features especially the affiliate programs (eg. customer forward 5 more customer and get free month of internet access).
second , I would like to know how the network should be created @ because I will start in one city first and then I will extend to another cities basically in every city there will be one ground station to receive the satellite signal @ but I want to make the billing server and the router in one city only @ what router should I consider @ I dont have that much of knowldge to decide (gentoo , centos , ubuntu ....) even redhat is ok I wold just like to know if there are any pre-packaged solutions , I would like to know

researching for a open source billing software to use for a typical hotspot/wi-fi wisp setup. The billing software should be stateful ie being able to keep track of the user time and automatically discount the user when the voucher expires, should be able to create logins based on specfic time ie,user can buy access from 6pm to 5am,etc then also volume based. eg a download volume quota is set and when the user has downloaded based on the set quota,he/she is diconnected. Can all these be acheived with radius server?

Ubuntu forum home page will lock up, just for several seconds once I scroll past the community cafe link. Then the page will free up, it is just annoying to have to wait 5-10 seconds for the page to free up.
I am running 64 bit ubuntu 10.04 and my browser is google chrome.
Does this happened to anyone else? Any advice on a corrections, this seems weird enough to not have a fix
FYI, does not freeze on firefox.

i have a problem with one of my PCs which refuses to run the CCLc timer on its screen, i have tried to run the application so many times but every time i run it it does not connect to the server to show the timer automatically as the other PCs do,therefore the client cannot know how much he/she is supposed to pay.this forces us to manually time the clients that are using that PCs.

I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server. However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.
The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?

I am trying to connect my desktop to my laptop over a non-internet connected LAN, but when i enable the LAN connection on my desktop (the one with the wireless) its internet stops working.
it is a very similar problem to this except that i am using ubuntu for the machine with the two connections.
right now i have my wireless on the 192.168.1.* address space, while the LAN is to be on 192.168.5.*
note: my goal is not to share internet with my laptop, just be able to connect to it and the internet at the same time.
desktop: ubuntu 9.10 , wireless and LAN
laptop: windows xp, LAN only

On this box I have Two seperate Ubuntu installations. Recently in both I seem to be having the same problem. I initially can connect to the internet as per normal and use any internet application. But after a period of time, sometimes just minutes, sometimes hours, even though the icon says connected, I cant update pages or send emails etc because there is no actual connection. My Physical connection is good I know - My Ubuntu laptop and Windows gamming PC connect fine during this period. So
Does this suggest an intermittent hardware fault or is there some thing in Ubuntu I can check to make sure that it is setup correctly and nothing has been corrupted? I am a lay PC person - I dont really want to be command prompting - Plug & Play and Point & Click is my limit.

I'm just about to set up my own home network here and I'd like to be able to control my Linux desktop over the network. VNC would be what I would normally use in this case, but the requirements are a bit different.
I basically need to be able to start work on something here on my desktop and continue that work seamlessly on a laptop or netbook as I'm moving around. I want to be able to literally pick up exactly where I left off and control my host computer's mouse pointer location, keyboard, etc and not have to open any windows: I need to be able to start from EXACTLY where I left off.
