General :: Ubuntu - Control Computer Over The Internet?

Nov 15, 2010

I'm just about to set up my own home network here and I'd like to be able to control my Linux desktop over the network. VNC would be what I would normally use in this case, but the requirements are a bit different.

I basically need to be able to start work on something here on my desktop and continue that work seamlessly on a laptop or netbook as I'm moving around. I want to be able to literally pick up exactly where I left off and control my host computer's mouse pointer location, keyboard, etc and not have to open any windows: I need to be able to start from EXACTLY where I left off.

Ubuntu :: Grub4Dos Error / Tried To Switch Back To Computer Control And Computer Went Black?

Jan 9, 2010

Here's the situation:

I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.

General :: Remote Control (via Ethernet) A Computer From Boot For Grub Choices?

Sep 1, 2010

I have a computer that I use for practically everything. In the same room I have a second computer that I use purely for trialing Linux distributions, It currently has Debian, gNewSense and Kubuntu on it with Grub to choose between. This computer has no keyboard / mouse / monitor, but it has directly wired ethernet to the home network. Is there any way I can set it to be remotely controlled from before / during grub so I can choose from the other computer which to run? I realise I can just crawl behind the desk and unplug the keyboard / mouse / monitor, but I don't particularly want to every time I reboot into a different distro. I also realise that remote access during boot is a security risk so is there a way of allowing only one MAC address to do the controlling?

Ubuntu :: Remote Computer Control Through SMS ?

Apr 27, 2010

As for what I am trying to do: I am looking for a way to run scripts and/or launch programs from a cell phone using SMS. I've found a few options close to this, but nothing that really fits what I'm trying to do. It seems I can either get speed or ease of use, but not both. To explain:

If I understand correctly, Evolution has this functionality through email, but email isn't instant. I'm trying, as best as I can, to use my phone almost like a remote; sending email from my phone would create a considerable wait time.

Using Pidgin's Buddy Pounce feature with AIM lets me use SMS to get a quick response, but I'm running into the problem that I can't make its action depend on what the message says. I want to be able to text, say, "Shutdown", and have my computer run a shutdown command, but Pidgin's Buddy Pounce feature doesn't seem to support checking for specific messages. I've been unable to find a plugin that changes this; if there was, it'd probably be my best bet.

Bluetooth is out; my computer's bluetooth adapter died a long time ago. Additionally, some of the things I'd like to do would be when I'm not near the computer, so even if it was functional, it would be limiting.

Anything that requires any apps for android, iPhone, or w/e are out too. I have an LG Dare, and while it's a nice phone, you can basically forget custom apps.

So, to recap, I'm trying to find some way of sending an SMS or email from my phone, have it be received as quickly as possible, and have the computer run a console command based on the content of the SMS/email. Any ideas?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Control What Apps Can And Cannot Connect To Internet?

Jul 2, 2011

Using lsof I noticed that everytime I open some apps (like Rhythmbox or Banshee) it connects to the internet over ports 80 and 443. All I'm doing though is surveying my music collection. Why is it connecting to the internet for this? I don't have podcasts or album covers or any of that stuff set. In fact I turned all that stuff off.

the problem is that I only get so much bandwidth on my mobile broadband plan. I don't want apps connecting when I don't need them to. I played around with the UFW but it appears to only allow port configuration. I can't see how to control the connections of applications. I can't block ports 80 and 443 because then I'd shut down the web browser. How do Linux users control the internet connections of installed applications?

Ubuntu Networking :: Control Internet Traffic Without Router?

Jul 27, 2010

I have a desktop, a laptop, & a wireless router. The router, unfortunately, doesn't support dd-wrt, tomato, etc firmware, but I would still like to prioritize voip/web browsing over bulk Internet traffic. I hope I can offload the router's missing QoS to my desktop.

Is it possible to have the laptop's connection go from the wall to the router to the desktop, where the desktop could perform the QoS of tomato, then continue on to the laptop? I'm a bit of a noob to networking (subnets?) but do well enough following good instructions.

As for the program that would do the QoS... Don't some Linux machines basically work as super-powered routers for businesses? So there must be some package but couldn't find one. The closest I got was wondershaper but it only shapes traffic for the computer on which it's installed; it might form part of the solution but falls short on its own. other devices should be able to access the Internet normally if the desktop is turned off, & work with other devices like a (jailbroken) iPod Touch.

Ubuntu Networking :: 2+ Internet Interfaces - Control Application Specific Usage?

Mar 24, 2010

I currently have two internet interfaces installed, one is ethernet (eth0) and the second is wireless (wlan0). Many command line applications allow you to specify which interface should be used, but many gui apps don't provide this option or at least I haven't found it. I have some questions:

1. How would I tell Firefox to use only my wlan0 interface? If it's possible in Firefox, is this also possible with Google Chrome?

2. If a program doesn't provide a command line argument to support this, is there a standalone application that could help manage preferences for multiple applications?

Ubuntu :: Installing On A Computer With Little Or No Internet?

Oct 1, 2010

I live in northern Canada. I am not in a high speed internet zone but use an alternative method which I pay lots of money to get high speed. However I am restricted to 5 GB of traffic per month.

Now I have to computers running Ubuntu. So for example, if I want to install TuxPaint on my first PC then I would go to the software center and it would download then install the software for me. Now if I wanted to install the same program on my second computer it would download it again. The problem is that this would download twice as much from the internet. Is there any way that I can save internet bandwidth by using the download files from my first computer to install the program on my second computer? Similarly, can I only download updates once but install them on both computers?

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Drags Down Internet Speed ?

Jun 19, 2011

Lately my computer, while connected to our router and using the internet, drags the connection speed of everyone in the house down tremendously, to the point of being unusable in many cases. Even buffering a ..... video causes tremendous lag across the network, making second-long load times stretch to a minute or more.

Now, our connection isn't the greatest, but ..... shouldn't cause that much lag, so I'm thinking there's something else at work. Is there some application I could use to monitor what programs on my computer are accessing the internet?
