General :: Finding Out Max Internet Speed In Ubuntu

I have 512 kbps broadband.I want to find out the peak download speed I get.For example: during day time the speed is relatively low. At midnight the download speed rises abruptly. In windows xp I had netmeter which will save the peak value whenever it occurs. I don't want to find average speed.I have installed wireshark & iftop. How do I use them ?

I have a centos 5.2 that is running in the vmware ESXi host.
I like to confirm the NIC speed. I did a ifconfig -a and noticed txqueuelen:1000. Is that the nic speed?

When connecting to the internet in Ubuntu 10.04 with an external USB dialup modem, using a terminal and sudo wvdial command, is there a command or some way that will show the modem connection speed?
I checked similar threads, but they don't appear to involve finding dialup modem speeds.

I'm trying to find a good host for my site, and I've been trying to get one with a fast, reliable connection - I frequently use it as a proxy server for various areas, and since my connection is frequently a 50 Mb or 100 Mb line, I need a fast network connection so it doesn't slow down too much when I switch to the proxy server.
At the moment, I've narrowed it down to a couple of providers that are all within a few hops and <6ms away from my main location; it pretty much comes down to connection speed. One in particular that I'm trialing offers an metered 100100 connection at a good price, so I'm hoping to go with them, but I want to make sure the connection is solid and doesn't drop to a much lower speed during the day if they are sharing it among many users.
I have a pretty simple speed test procedure - I use wget on a 1GB file hosted on a backbone with a 1GB connection, and see how fast it downloads. For now, it's sticking at a steady 11.2 MBs or 90 Mbs, which is fast enough for me, but I need to make sure it can maintain that speed even in times of heavy usage.
[/BACKSTORY]
Basically, I need a script that runs wget every half hour and logs the output and time in a reasonably readable format. It's probably something simple enough to do, but I'm just learning my way around the linux command shell, so some simple instructions on how to create and run such a script would be great [CentOS 5]. I have full root access to the server and I'm the only user on it if it matters.

I am a Linux newbie using fc11 and wireless broadband from 3G for my personal laptop. Sometimes my download speed is up to 100+ kB/s (due to my observation from using yum command) and also there is time its only 5.6 kB/s. Its really slow. At first, I disabled automatic update so that it can work faster. It does work faster for a while and then the speed drops to around 11 or 12 kB/s.

I was wondering does anyone have any ideas/suggestions for speeding up internet responsiveness.
I have done the Disable IPV6 trick, never really made any difference.
I mean don't get me wrong my internet works just when I type a link then hit 'Go' the browser takes a few seconds to comprehend the grueling task ahead.
When I use my Win 7 the response time is almost instant and I also get about an extra 3-4mb speed difference.
Win 7: Downsteam 13.7Mb, Upstream 0.9Mbs
Ubuntu 11.04: Downstream 9.2Mb, Upstream 0.8Mbs
NB. I use Chromium on Ubuntu and Chrome on Win7. Running 11.04 x64. Wireless Network card is something to do with the driver RT73USB

Ubuntu version 10.04. until day before yesterday, everything is working fine but now specific problem arises that is my internet download become 1/4th than usual.
Heres the story: i have internet (LAN) connection of 512 kbps. when i tries to download anything, using (syneptic, firefox default downloader, jdownloader) the download speed i get is 10-20 kb/s which should be 50-60 kb/s. the limited downloading speed is only when i tried to download a file; browsing n online video content play at max. speed i.e. 50-60 kb/s. i m using net speed panel applet to monitor current net speed.
Here is something unexpected: during downloading, when i start a game(openTTD or battle of wesnoth), downloading speed accelerated to max. (50-60 kb/s) but when i close the game, it drop back to 10-20 kb/s. so definitely this isn't the problem with the net.

dualboot win7 and ubuntu 10.10 x64.All was fine. Suddenly I noticed that download speed on ubuntu is 100-500Kb/s, while it has to be 100Mbps. Same resources download 9Mb/s on dualboot win, so it is not hardware/isp problem. This problem occurs when connecting by eth cable. The connection is over ppp0 vpn tunnel. The ping is very slow - around 300ms even to my ISP.The only soft I was installing recently is tor/vidalia/privoxy,but I removed them all.I also noticed that avahi-daemon is running, can it be causing the delays?

When using launchpad and the ubuntu daily build website it is very slow. I get 1.2mb/s normally and the speed drops quickly to 0kb/s This is the case from any version of ubuntu that is installed on my laptop. In windows it is no problem, equally there is no problem from a live cd or an install on my external hard disk. Is canonical blacklisting/slow listing my ip?
I am behind a university network but am sure this problem occurs at home .I did a clean install and had no problem until about an hour ago. When I tried to re download a project using bzr my speed instantly ropped.I had downloaded it fine a couple of hours ago. I hope that someone can shine some light on this, its very hard to work on projects if I can't download them.

I have been having come problem, my surfing speed has gone to zero. I can download at full speed but surfing is crawl speed or just timing out. I am pretty sure it's because firefox is clogged, I just want to know is there a way to clear the clog w/o losing my settings? I fixed this before by making a new user, but I don't want to loose all my saved form's and bookmarks.

Lately my computer, while connected to our router and using the internet, drags the connection speed of everyone in the house down tremendously, to the point of being unusable in many cases. Even buffering a ..... video causes tremendous lag across the network, making second-long load times stretch to a minute or more.
Now, our connection isn't the greatest, but ..... shouldn't cause that much lag, so I'm thinking there's something else at work. Is there some application I could use to monitor what programs on my computer are accessing the internet?

I'm running Kubuntu 10.4, and I'm having a really slow Internet connection, with Windows everything works fine.
When I upload a file to an internal Ubuntu server the speed is ok ~15MB/s.
The problem is only with Internet Firefox / synaptic, any program using Internet. Last download done with synaptic display 18KB/s when normally it should be 500.

So I switch between Ubuntu and Windows alot, because some games I can only get to run smoothly in the windows environment. Anyways, one thing I have been noticing ever since I got Ubuntu but never really questioned, was about my download speeds. When downloading a torrent in Windows, I topped out out about 2.0 mb/s. Where as in my Ubuntu install, running the same torrent program (utorrent) and downloading the same file, I was getting 3.0 mb/s. I was wondering, what is it about Ubuntu that is utilizing my internet connection better? Only a hand ful of times have I ever reached 3.0 in my windows install (such as right now while I am downloading a game through steam).

So i am very new to linux based OS. Just started getting used to the terminal. but my problem is i am trying to install a game on steam and it is downloading very slow. i am used to getting close to 700 kb/s on windows 7 but on ubuntu 11.04 i am only getting 170-180 max. now i have searched all over and tried to fix it on my own but i just cant figure it out and am getting very frustrated. so if anybody has an idea as to how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. (have looked through the forum by the way but as i said im new to linux and im not actually sure if im looking at the right things) but im using a wired connection. it says im connected to something called auto etho. and there is something called a loopback connection or something like that.

Is there some software to measure Internet speed and show where the slowest element is?
I use OpenSuse 11.1 and KDE although Im happy to set up a user using Gnome.
Just recently my browsing speed dropped to almost nothing ...I used [url] to measure my speed and it gave a very slow result 30kb/sec ....usually its around 3000kb/sec. I rang my ISP's helpdesk and they told me my ADSL connection was fine. Two minutes later it was back to normal!
I know the internet speed varies from time to time ...I guess depending on how many are using it and for what. But..I suspect that my ISP was restricting my speed and Im looking for a tool that will tell me which part of the internet is the "slowest"
I would also welcome pointers to information about internet speed and what causes it to change.
