Fedora Security :: Slow - No System Updates ?
Oct 4, 2010
My system went for three days w/o a software update... Is this normal(anyone experiencing this?)...?
It seems like to me.. Fedora 13 has a longer update interval than Fedora 12.. I remember back in Fedora 12 I get security updates like every other 12 hrs.. (I know as with security patches the less the "better"(in some way))..
But I am still concerned.. security updates has been slow for me.

Is there a way to to check if the system has the available security updates installed? Specifically, I am looking to do this programmatically.

I got a message today telling me that there where 78 updates available. One of them was Kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i586 and when I installed all the updates and rebooted, my startup time was very slow. And when I checked the boot.log I noticed this:
Code:
Enabling the nvidia driver: *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/python: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00f0e24a ***

I have been experiencing harassment with my websites being hacked so pardon me if this is an over-paranoid question.
Just recently started on FC11 after having abandoned Fedora for CentOS for a few months. So glad to be back, but...
I have been getting notices about security updates. When I click for the update, I am not asked for the root password and the update occurs.

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

My server is connected to the Internet for ssh on port 22 with root logon disabled, a single non-dictionary word user name allowed, and pki authentication only (about as secure as I can make it). I've previously run fc5 and 9 servers using the same sshd config since 2006 and had no security troubles, so I'm happy, but.. After the fc13 install and configuration, logins from a host on a remote network are taking about 1m 30s to complete! A (partial) console output for ssh -vv appears below. The lines marked with "**" were the lines after which significant pauses happen. This is fully repeatable.
Code:
debug1: Next authentication method: publickey
debug1: Offering public key:
debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply

I just installed F11 on my laptop last night....the first thing I did was download Updates. Initially I wanted to focus on getting the critical updates installed only and while almost dozing off (Late night) I inadvertently ended up doing a bunch of other software updates. I wanted to know peoples thoughts...about software and system updates...do many of you just update everything or select the most important to download and install. Is there a way to rollback from any updates you installed...I have plenty of HD space..but if I don't need it...I dont want to keep it installed...also how many of you really look at every update to find out what is? Or do you just let it ride and install everything?

So yesterday I receive a copy of the SANS @RISK security vulnerability newsletter, and, lo and behold, Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird are on it yet again. (Yeah, I know, shocking, isn't it?)So I quickly check what versions I have installed. Yup: Vulnerable.I check whether updates are available. These are pretty serious "remote code execution" vulnerabilities and the status is "vendor confirmed, updates available." So why isn't my 9.10 desktop's update manager telling me updates are available?

I'm new to server admin, so my question is based on what may be a bad assumption. With a server, my assumption is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". In other words, I'm not really interested in upgrading the software to the latest and greatest if I already have stuff working on the server.
However, the one place where I DO want to constantly have upgrades is for security patches. How do I apply security updates to Ubuntu Server... and ONLY security updates?

With an Ubuntu 10.10 upgraded from 10.04, under Software Sources, Updates, there is a radio button marked "Install security updates without confirmation." I have this radio button marked, but still get "Important security updates" almost daily in my update manager. I don't remember this feature actually ever working.

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Does anyone know when we'll see Firefox 3.0.19 packaged for 8.04 LTS? I'm still stuck at 3.0.18. And what will happen after this? My understanding is that after .19 Mozilla is dropping support for FF 3.0.
Upgrade policies not withstanding, I find it rather annoying when an "LTS" release doesn't keep up with the most security-critical package in the distro, the browser. 8.04 LTS should have moved to FF 3.5+ a *long* time ago. Now it seems it will be forced to do so or else just forget about browser updates for the last year of 8.04?
I know I can install the current Firefox with ubuntuzilla, I just keep wishing Ubuntu would do it for me.

I installed Fedora 12, 64 bit on my Dell Latitude D820 laptop with Core2 Duo processor(7200 speed) and 2 gigabyte Memory.
I have updated the yum. I have enabled the rpm repositories.
It is very weird that my system suddenly works very slowly and hangs. every time I login after a while the CPU usage goes up to the end with out any reason!
Before this I had installed Fedora 12, 32 bit and I had the exact same problem.
I have installed Fedora 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 on my laptop before and I had non of these problems with them.
The interesting point is that after hanging my system works constantly slow even when I restart my system! It is slow even in booting the BIOS and start up and choosing the kernel page!
The only remedy to get rid of the slow working for a while is to Shut down the system completely and turn it on again. Restarting do not make it work normally just shutting down makes it normal for a while.

I just installed dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 on my WinXP laptop. The laptop is a Compaq v2552us.
In windows mode, the internet works plenty fast.
In Ubuntu, I can't download a single update for hardware drivers or for ubuntu (it says there are 74 though).
It starts to DL, but max speed is about 800B/s, but that only last for a couple seconds before it switches to unknown. I am connected to my wireless router via cable, can't even get wireless to work (I suspect the aforementioned hardware drivers, which is why I need this to work).

I've FC10 installed. After updating a few days back, I'm unable to use Network Manager to connect to the net through my USB Modem. All the threads I've read say to do
Code: yum update NetworkManager but how can I do it without net connection? Can anyone post the exact link of the Network Manager's latest and BUG-FREE rpm so that I can directly run it?

Does any one have a way to speed up the internet on Fedora 12? I have a dual boot system with Vista x64 on the flip-side, and my wireless connection there is just fine. But when I get on this side, it goes back to the dial-up days (yes I said the DU word). yum updates seem to be just fine, and e-mail seems to be fine. just firefox is slow. And now that I put the x64 Flash in (thanks to leigh123linux), with that working too it seems even a little slower again.

When ever I transfer large files using cp, mv, rsync or dolphin the system will slow down to the point that it's unusable. It will sometime hang completely and not accept any input until the file is transferred. I have no clue what could be causing this problem but I know it shouldn't be happening.I am using Fedora 15 (2.6.40.3-0.fc15.x86_64) with KDE 4.6. have a Phenom II 955 processor, 6 GB of system ram and the OS and swap file is on an 80 GB SSD. Copying files in the SSD doesn't cause any problem, but moving files between my other two large HDDs causes the extreme slow down. Using htop I can see that my system load jumps to between 3 and 4, but my RAM and CPU usage stays low during the transfer. Here are two commands that take about 10 mins to run and make the system unusable while it's running. It usually transferring around 2-20GB worth of data during the transfers:
cp -a /media/data.1.5/backup/Minecraft/backups/* /media/data.0.5/backup/Minecraft/backups/
rsync -a /media/data.1.5/backup/ /media/data.0.5/backup/
/media/data.1.5/ is the mount point for a 1.5 TB internal SATA drive, and /media/data.0.5/ is the mount point for a 500 GB internal SATA drive.

What file system should I use to partition a slow and old hard drive? I know that ext2 was best for old computers which mine is not but I am using an old hard drive for extra storage and I was curious if anyone knew if using ext2 or ext4 would show any performance differences.

My system clock loses about 10 seconds every minute. The hwclock is fine. I've tried different kernel args (clocksource=acpi_pm, nohz=off, highres=off). None of these have any effect. I am running Fedora 11 with kernel 2.6.30-105.2.23.fc11.x86_64 on an AMD Istanbul node (Processor 2439 SE).

i still can't see quite well the security reason for not allowing one logging in as root on Fedora, but anyway...how to become the root on my system, Fedora 10, please?i did open a terminal and typed s - root then my password, now im the root, but only on the terminal, as CLI, but what if i want to change the munu.lst inside grub i.e.? and some other files or settings that there's no option to just type in the root password, how to overcome that please?
