Oct 23, 2010On my Windoze machine, I use Replay Media Catcher 4 which runs silently in the background and captures any videos (FLV, AVI, MPG, WMV, etc) on any websites that I happen to go to, and saves them to a folder on my hard drive. Right now, if I want to save a video that I'm wathing from Ubuntu, I have to go to /temp, guess which file it is, and copy it after it downloads fully but before it finishes playing, otherwise Firefox deletes it from /temp right away. This is a pain.
Yes, there are screen motion capture utilities in the Ubuntu Software Center, but they're just screen scrapers that result in low quality copies without any audio. I want something that will actually capture the video stream and save it as a file. Even if it doesn't save all videos automatically like RMC4, and I have to right click on the video to Save As, that would be better than copying it from /temp at the precise exact moment.

May 27, 2011I just installed ubuntu 10.04.02 on to my tablet, aside from the dreaded intel video problem. Install went ok, but I'm finding now. That when I rotate the screen, the touch screen isn't adjusting to match. I'm not really ubuntu savvy.

Dec 3, 2010I recently installed Debian Linux (Lenny, but I used a backpost kernel) A couple months ago, I dropped my laptop and it has GIANT cracks in it so that it is nearly impossible to see most of the screen. I've managed to work around it by hooking it up to my TV screen, but now that I've installed debian, and am trying to use bash as much as possible, I wonder if it would be possible to tell debian not to use any of the unusable screen. The problem I am encountering is that I can't get either VLC or Windows Media Player (both on Windows 7) to play the file in repeat mode gaplessly, which makes it useless since it's a drum beat and it needs to be precise.

Jul 7, 2011I used vlc to play some videos, than I was playing with programs and I install ffmpeg and kino. Now vlc doesn't play avi files with the motion jpec codec. All that I see now is a green screen and I can hear the audio. Everything else is fine, I can play those videos with Movie Player. I'm using debian squeeze.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Screen Not Shutting Off When Laptop Lid Closed?
May 15, 2010When I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

Jun 12, 2010I have two minor problems with Ubuntu which I've been running on my aging Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook for a couple of years now.
First, I recently upgraded to v10.04 with no problems. However, I've just applied the latest updates via Update Manager and the laptop will now hang after the welcome screen.
There are no error messages, just a black screen and the case fan runs a full tilt until I force a shutdown. I've waited 5 or so minutes to see if it's actually doing anything but it would appear that it isn't.
The only way to boot the laptop is to choose an older Grub menu option, then it boots up fine. It may very well be a hardware issue because another (newer) laptop in the household has updated no problem.
Next, I tried to change the password of the admin account using "Users and Groups". It appeared to work but then I had to use the old password to log in again. On logging in I am prompted for the new password, the error message saying that the "token ring" password (I think it's token ring, I'm doing this from memory) doesn't match.
Again I can live with this quirk but it would be nice to put it right.

May 10, 2011I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 which I would like to use completely with any Linux OS. I have tried to install Linux Ubuntu 10.04.1 but it appears that it doesn't recognize the external monitor and ends the installation. I have a clean hard drive that I could install but I do not know which of the two drives I should replace. I can only get into windows in safe mode and I would think this may have something to do with the problem, don't no.

Jul 18, 2010I've had Windows XP installed on a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with 1 gig of ram and 70 gig hard disk. Today I decided to install Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition to ext3 partitions I made on the laptop's hard disk. The Ubuntu installation went fine, and Ubuntu was up and runnning. Then for fun, I checked the available WiFi networks in this apartment building. Six were secure but one WiFi was open, so I clicked it out of curiosity. Within seconds, my laptop's 15-inch screen went super-dark, nearly jet black.I couldn't read anything on the screen. Pictures and words were still on the screen, but just way too dark to read or to see with any clarity at all. I don't have a WiFi card in the laptop.Instead I use Verizon's usb727 air card on Verizon EVDO Mobile Broadband (3G)
I don't know if the free Wifi network hosed me in some way with a nasty trick (I don't have a WiFi card in the laptop--just the usb727 dongle which is an EVDO aircard), or if it was just coincidental that the screen went super dark seconds after clicking the open Wifi network in Ubuntu's network manager applet.When I reboot, I don't see anything anymore, not the POST, not Windows XP booting up, or Ubuntu booting up. The only way I see anything now is to connect the laptop to an external monitor using the laptop's blue video connector. And even then, I still can't see the boot-up POST process, or the BIOS screen.I can only see Ubuntu or Windows XP after they've finished loading, and only on an external monitor. Did the new installation of Ubuntu hose my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop's screen, or was it the Wifi network, or did the screen just coincidentally go bad minutes after I installed Ubuntu and seconds after I clicked the open Wifi connection?

Jan 25, 2011I searched the forum but could not find anything to solve my problem. I installed Ubuntu via Wubi.exe from windows first time, before deciding to completely format and start with a Linux Ubuntu clean install (64-bit). When I installed it with Wubi.exe, I simply plugged in my Wave and it connected to the internet...no fuss!
Problem is, after clean installing Ubuntu, the same does not happen. I cant connect to mobile broadband. It is worth mentioning that this is my only internet connection available (mobile broadband) and I am thus unable to update, get necessary repositories from Linux etc.
I read something about usb_modeswitch being involved, manually did that, but I still cannot connect to the mobile broadband. Mobile broadband is enabled when I right-click the connections too. I set up the connection for CellC, removed the "Cellcis" username, added it and more, but it still does not connect.
Can anybody give me some pointer on how to go about fixing this connection, because as you can imagine, my Linux install is pretty useless without internet.

Jun 24, 2011I have a wav file bigger than 8GB. i recorded it on a windows PC. unfortunately wav files cant be bigger than 2GB. somehow i got a file that is almost 9GB. I tried to chop the file under ubuntu into smaller pieces to open it part by part. i used gnome split to divide the file and made 10 parts out of it. now i have these parts of the data which i cant read with no program except for gnome split to merge them together again - which would only bring me to the beginning of my problem. so my question is: is there any other way to open/ split&open a wav file of that size or maybe a way to open the splitted file partially?
