General :: Unity Panels Suddenly Don't Show Up
Jun 1, 2011
All I get now is an empty background color. Don't think I did anything to cause this. Creating a new user and logging in I have the complete Unity interface. How do I get the interface back using my initial user Login?

As far as I can tell Unity and Gnome 3.0 look basically the same, are all linux distros going to start to look like that? I finally decided to make the move from windows to linux and I was having a lot of fun customising everything, but now that 11.04 is out i can't even right click on the panels any more :( , can someone refer me to a good linux distro that DOES NOT look like a mac (I hate how macs look), otherwise I might have to move back to windows

I have a strange problem: Due to my small monitor I have set the gnome panels on top and bottom to auto hide. After installing the nvidia drivers the panels do not appear if I go to the edges with my mouse. If I switch the resolution to VGA (640x480) however, the panels appear again, but not at top/ bottom but in the middle of the screen.

I have no idea what happened. When I restarted my laptop a message telling me that my hardware cannot support Unity came up. This is quite impossible, because I've been running Unity with no problems since 11.04 was released.
Compiz says that the interface is unity, and when I checked in login screen, it's not set to Ubuntu Classic or anything, just Ubuntu.

I have a computer with pentium 3 that i'd like to run ubuntu 10.04 on. I've installed it from a livecd (the cd is fine, because i used that cd to install 10.04 on another machine, and its working perfectly). The installation went fine, and on the first boot everything worked fine as well. but when i tried it again, the computer started but at the desktop there were no panels on the top or bottom, although every thing else was working.
I could use Alt+F2 to run any application that comes preinstalled on the ubuntu cd including the terminal, but i can't access Applications, Places, System, etc.
Everytime at startup during boot there is a message that prints "error: no suitable mode found" "error :unknown command 'terminal'" (without the quotes).
this computer has a bit of a history as i once tried to install linux mint on it but failed because of a bad livecd. the grub got installed wrongly, tried to reinstall xp, didn't work, then ultimately after trying a few other things turned to DBAN, which surprisingly also failed crashing everytime i ran it before completing its erase, which leads me to believe that Dban didn't leave my hard drives in too good a condition. when the ubuntu live cd worked however i was ignited with a brand new spark of hope, and even that now is starting to diminish, is there no hope for my pentium 3.

I've got a fresh install of Natty on my Dell Studio 17 laptop. The screen on the laptop doesn't work so I have it plugged into my Panasonic TV with an HDMI cable. The only problem is that the TV is not showing the outer edges of my desktop. So, I can't see the "Applications" menu, for example, or the button to click to Logout. I've messed with every setting available on the TV and nothing has helped. Can anyone provide any advice? I've started messing around with xrandHere is the output of 'xrandr':
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3360 x 1207, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1440x900+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 367mm x 229mm
1440x900 60.1*+ 59.9
[code]....

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and all was working ok till today. I am not sure if it was because of a new update(manager)or maybe another reason, but i get a purple screen and a unresponsive window from a alarm clock app and thats it. This occures when I login onto Classic Ubuntu and Safe mode, the main Ubuntu (Unity) is working fine.
I did use Ubuntu Classic since install and was running fine. Now the screen is purple and cant even shut of the PC with the powerbutton. I can still get into terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 and that about it... I had Dock installed, task bar... all is gone, even the background picture changed.

I installed ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop and everything worked just fine. When I helped a friend to install it on his laptop unity did not work, only ubuntu classic. On the login screen I choose "ubuntu" and when I log in I get "ubuntu classic" I went back to the login screen and chose "ubuntu classic" and it did the same thing so my question is:
where did unity go?
has anyone else had this issue, I have installed the recommended nvidia drivers and I still don't see unity, I don't know what to do next!

In ubuntu 11.04 unity, i miss the icon to show the desktop with just one click (like in the gnome-panel).

I upgraded from 10.10 netbook edition to 11.04 and something went wrong. After the grub menu I get the password window on that typical magenta screen with lights. Afterwards I get a message, that the netbook connected to the internet, but the Unity desktop doesnt show. Still the magenta desktop without anything. Already have tried to select the previous linux edition on the grub-menu, but no change.

Is there a way to make Unity launcher have the open applications/programs at the top? This way I don't have to scroll through the entire launcher to see what is open/running.Or, is there a way of seeing what is open - like <Super>+W but that shows minimised items too?

I find that I prefer have both panels located at the screen top. That way I don't have to go to the bottom of the screen for one thing, then back to the top for another. I arranged the panel so the regular top one is on top, then the panel that contains the open applications is underneath. The problem is, when I reboot, the panels lose their order. First, the regular top panel initializes, then the bottom ones starts and pushes the first panel down, which becomes what you see in the picture: I would like to find a way to keep them in the opposite order of what you see in the picture, but every time I reboot they end up in that order.

I have noticed that the files and folders search in Unity, only shows up those files which have been amended (or possibly just opened) since the install.
i was wondering if there was a way i could have the search index (or something vaguely equivalent) all the files on my machine. This is especially important given that i reinstall the OS every six months on a new distribution cycle, copying all my old files across.
Without being able to see my old files the search is pretty much reduced to a recent history search.

I configured it to use IMAP to access our exchange 2010 server front end on a LAN connection. Our webmail connection is segregated behind Forefront, so it was not connecting/authing that way. Even though smartphones have no problem. (sidenote, is there an activesync linux mail client ?)
I have many root folders and several folders underneath my inbox. total mailsize in inbox is 3.5 GB without subfolders. The sent is likewise as large. And is likewise empty.
Things I checked already:
View is all
Folder subscription is on and local copy is on
More info:
Thunderbird worky fine.
But thunderbird is missing calender
Tried adding lightening, but it won't add into thunderbird.
Will try finding a diff add on, or if anyone knows how to get lightening into thunderbird 3.1.8 on ubuntu 10 that would be great as well.

I just updated my Ubuntu from 9.04 to 9.10. Since then everything looks fine, but the panels (the one at the top with menus and date, and the one at the bottom with the running applications and the virtual desktops). I have a dual screen, and the panels show on the wrong one... I already changed the display setting, trying to inverse the screens, but the panel always remain on the wrong screen.

I'm on my other computer right now because I stupidly deleted the panels (taskbar).I tried to bring them back, but it leaves a blank space now. Also, I tried going on the internet but it said it's not connected.Clicking the Network Center in the Settings option doesn't respond either.IT: Also, this panel is supposedly from the Xfce. Whenever I try to add something like right click on it, it doesn't respond.

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

From this morning my account suddenly became read only. For example, when I open a file to edit, it shows [readonly] and it wont let me change anything. However, when I look at the permissions by issuing ls -l command, it indicates that read write permissions for the owner is on. As a user, my whole account is stored under home, the account has all three permissions read, write and execute. Can anybody please tell me how to get rid of the read only attribute?

Recently my wireless stopped working on my Debian testing system. It just doesn't connect. The best I get (only after a reboot) is that it says it did connect, but failed to get IP address. But usually it just tries to connect, disconnects straight away, connects again etc. so it never manages to associate correctly.
I am sure it did work about a month ago, stopped working after recent upgrades from the repository.

Recently installed debian lenny.Running very well.WM: ratpoison.Suddenly, today, the internet runs much slower.ONLY ON THIS MACHINE - the parallel windows machine, off of which I was successfully weaning myself, is not having this problem, so it's neither the router nor the actual internet connection.Specifically: I can't attach a document in yahoo mail.I tried it in iceweasel, same problem, so it's not the browser.I piped the output of "top" for a minute or so to a text file, which I'm attaching.
