I found this documentation on how to edit the menu source file:but I have no environment variable $XDG_DATA_HOME or $KDEDIR. I am running Ubuntu 9.04. Also, after I have edited the menu file, do I have to restart to see that it worked?Also, if there is an easier way to customize, I would like to know that as well.

I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

Now I want to try wine again, and I know it's installed, but it don't show up in applications. I've tried "edit menus > revert" but that don't work. I hear wine has made some progress and don't want to format my /home partition.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop using WUBI to preserve my Windows XP installation. I plan to use it for work so have installed our VPN client and a desktop sharing application through a .sh script and a .deb package respectively. The Applications Menu was updated with the submenu and icons for the new applications and I copied thm to the desktop as well. However when I log out and log back in again my menus and desktop have reverted back to what they were before, and my icons have disappeared.

On my desktop im trying to edit my "Applications" menu" so that it includes "Programming" and "Other" sections of the menu. So i righclick "Applications" goto "Edit Menus" and try to checkbox the "Programming" & "Other" menu options. Alas as soon as I check them - the tick dissapears again - and there is no way for me to edit the menu. Its my system I have full access.

I have read about creating a .desktop file but tried that and it still does not appear under the menu I like. It does appear on the desktop but not because of the .desktop file.

I have installed Fedora 14 with gnome. My problem is that in some applications the archive menu doesn't appears. Some of this applications are geany, tux commander, filezilla ... nevertheless in other applicationas like firefox, chrome, vlc ... the menu appears.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Fedora 15 (64 bit) on my laptop using preupgrade. Everything is working great except for a small problem. My menus are completely messed up. In F14, I had organized my menus in a particular way. After the upgrade, many of items have been moved around quite randomly. I tried to fix it using 'alacarte' but nothing is changed in that - i.e. according to 'alacarte' all my menus are in the right place. In reality, though, the upgrade process has deleted a few menu folders but not the items in them. The items are just moved to random locations. Is there a way to fix these changes these? 'alacarte' is of no use here. Is it possible to fix these using CLI? Where are the information regarding the menu organization stored?

The changes are a little jarring, but I'm trying to have some good faith, see how I adjust to things, etc. Any ways, the applications menu (in "fallback" mode) or the 'activities -> applications' menus (in "full" mode) have every application I've ever installed, some times poorly classified. I'd like to edit these, making more minimal menus.
There is, of course, the "alacarte" application. While it runs just fine -- the changes are not reflected in the menus (in either mode). One could manually edit the desktop configuration text files, I assume, but as much work as I need to do -- I was hoping for a GUI application. Does an alternative exist? or a way to interface them?
I am using Fedora 15 Live CD and after I did Yum update there are 2 icons of google chrome showing in the applications menu and also there are few other icons I want to remove, is there a way to do that, I searched in system settings but there was nothing there?

after this I purged wine, deleted /.wine and reinstalled, but the menu entries do not get reinstalled. I know how to make launchers, what I want is the interactive menus back (browse c, uninstall and programs)
I want to put a script of mine in the applications menu , so that when I click on it , it executes itself ...so I created a new application by the name myapplication.desktop in /usr/share/applications/ . But when in GUI mode I traverse down to this directory and click on myapplication.desktop . It gives me an error "myapplication.desktop is not a directory". The crazy part is that when I run it using the terminal freedom@freedom-laptop: /usr/share/applications$ myapplication it runs perfectly well. I can't understand the problem...the script is correct , but I don't know about the error saying "it is not a directory" as all the other files in there are also files and they do run even in graphical mode .

If I'm perfectly honest, I really don't like the "messaging menu". I don't like the way it's a single point that lumps all sorts of messages together. From a socialite's perspective, I'm sure it's awesome... from a more business orientated perspective, it's cumbersom - the icon is green, does that mean I have an important email, a new post has popped up on my RSS feed (via Liferea), or is it just Bob saying "Hi" in Empathy... I won't know until I click it I would rather have separate notification icons for the individual applications, just like it used to be. Now, I know how to remove application from the Messaging Menu... or at least I thought I did.
I just tried removing 'gwibber' from /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications I have stopped using Empathy (I have used Pidgin/GAIM for a lot longer and I'm stuck in my ways ), so that's gone. I have removed the PPA version of Liferea that had Message Menu integration, so that's gone. I have removed Evolution as I use (and have done so for ~10 years) ClawsMail, so that's gone. The last thing I want to get rid of is Gwibber. I like Gwibber, I just don't want it in the Messaging Menu.
i recently installed spotify for wine for a second time, but the icon has not appeared in the applications>wine menu like it did the first time i installed it, is there a way to add the icon to the wine menu, or a reason why the icon did not go straight to the wine menu like it normally does when a new program is installed?
