Debian :: Setting Up An Automatic Program Restart

May 20, 2010

I tried to set up an automatic program restart on Debian Lenny for fail2ban and asterisk. Google helped me to find some HowTos. However, all what I tried so far doesn't work. The latest version: According some instructions the following commands have been written in a file called auto_start_stop:

Code: #! /bin/sh

-> saved in the folder /etc/init.d and
-> its properties changed with a right-click to 075.
-> The links have been created with update-rc.d auto_start_stop defaults

Why this doesn't work and how I could correct it?

Ubuntu :: Automatic OS Detection Won't Find It When Run The Mkconfig Command On Grub2's Wik

Dec 15, 2010

I changed the grub2 on my /dev/sda to Arch's version, instead of Ubuntu's, and now I keep booting into the initramfs prompt whenever I try to use Ubuntu. The automatic OS detection won't find it when I run the mkconfig command on grub2's wiki, and I currently have the following in /etc/grub.d/40_custom:

Code:

enuentry "Ubuntu Linux" {
set root=(hd0,3)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-23-generic
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-23-generic root=dev/sda3 ro quiet
}

Which according to my partition layout, and a double check on gparted, is correct. Do I need to flag it as boot or something else? I tried putting Ubuntu's grub2 back on with the live cd but it kept saying /dev/ was busy.

Software :: Can't Start / Stop / Restart Samba Via Command Line

Oct 12, 2010

I have a GUI for Samba already as it most likely installed, the problem is I don't have a shared folder in admin menu. I have told samba what folder to share and what user to have access to it. As well I have looked at the config file to make sure what was in the gui printed into the config file. However I cannot start, stop, restart samba via command line. I will try config package and hopefully that drops down everything,

[code]...

sudo service smbd restart unrecognized service, nmbd same thing. Now it is installed, but has no script file or the script file is not in the init.d folder like it should be still trying to figure I have come to the conclusion that the daemons are not installed and am trying to figure out what those script files look like or a way to import them off a ftp, however no luck with google so far. But the scripts files don't exist on my box. how do you install samba daemons when it says samba is already installed.

Software :: Perl - Statistics For Duplication File Contents?

Oct 23, 2009

I got a folder containing 20,0000 files (and will be more later), each of this file contains a single URL. What I am trying to do is to do statistics on number of duplicated URLs (file with same content) accumulated, say, from September to October by each day. For example, if file A was created in Sep 1st has a same content with file B created in Sep 15th, then we add 1 to number of duplication on Sep 15th (not Sep 1st). Currently I got a way to do it (in perl) as below:

(1) Read all files inside the folder, print out file content, and modified time into a big file in the format:

Code:

[URL] [month] [day]

(2) Sort the file by month then by day

(3) Then Create two hash : date and content

And then read url from each line into a hash 'content' from the big file (key is url, value left undef), for each new read url found in hash 'content', a duplication is detected, so mark '$date{$month.$day}++' The algorithm could be working but may take too long... so I am wondering if there is some easier way to do that besides hashes.

I know it's not a problem with cron and simple script, but maybe there is existing way to do that? And also, I need to make statistics on web-traffic. I need to have list of URLs visited by users (source ip, destination url). Is it possible with iptables? or with any other software but without using proxy servers.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Automatic Ppp Reconnect If Down

Mar 5, 2010

I didn't find a solution to making my 3G/GPRS "modem" reconnect automatically when the connection fails, so I made a solution of my own. It's very annoying when you're downloading a file overnight, only to find that the connection has failed 5 min after you went to sleep.Restarting the NetworkManager daemon makes it automatically connect to all configured interfaces, including 3G/GPRS, so I made a simple script to do that.First, we check if the modem is even connected. Replace Huawei with the brand you're using. Any unique word on the line in lsusb will do fine as well. Then we check if the connection is up, and if it is, we simply exit. Otherwise, the NM daemon is restarted, which causes the 3g/gprs to reconnect.
