General :: Ubuntu Server 10.10 Installation On Dell Inspiron 7000
Mar 11, 2011
I have an old dell inspiron 700 that I want to turn into a home file server. I have installed ubuntu 7.10 and after a huge amount of google work got all my hardware in line. Then I realised that I should have installed 10.10 So I downloaded and burnt the new ISO and tried to install it. The install does not recognize my Xircom RealPort Ethernet card but that is okay, 7.10 didn't either and I got it working post install. But 10.10 can't detect the pci hard drive. I have tried various things but since I am not that familiar with linux I am just stabbing in the dark.
What bios settings should I be aiming for? What boot options should I set and how? Why are the russians being such kill joys over the discovery of fossilized meteorites?

I am attempting to load 10.10-i386 on a Dell Inspiron. I have created my boot CD and all works fine with the install manager until it gets to the "Who are you?" page. It will not let me advance past this page. I am a complete rookie on Ubuntu and Linux OS.

I used wubi to install 9.10 on my dell inspiron 1525. I had a problem with not being able to get wireless working, and found out that I had to activate the Broadcom STA driver which lead to a crash. Now I've rebooted, everytime I try to install I get 'SystemError() InstallArchives' or the authenticate box hangs. Is there another way to install these drivers?

A friend of mine, who doesnt understand computers at all, had a virus on her Dell Inspiron 6000 (2-GHz Pentium M processor, 1GB of DDR400 DRAM) laptop. She was unable to boot it up.
So i advised her to boot up Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition. I was instructing her over emesene, so it was quite difficult at times, however, she complained that when she loaded up and went through all the instructions as per the netbook "how to", she only got a purple screen.
After a while, we managed to get her to the actual ubuntu screen, however the icons down the left hand side were all missing. I have a feeling this is something to do with the Graphics Processor: integrated Intel GMA 900 graphics, or ATI Mobility Radeon X300.
I asked her to try and get online but she couldnt so i asked her to find the drivers for her network card and she couldn't find them.
I then asked her to update drivers but they wouldnt update and no drivers were found.
I really want her to get up and running with ubuntu and convert her, but its really frustrating, not getting her online and up and running. But she wants to load XP professional.

I recently migrated from ubuntu 10.10 to xubuntu 10.10 on my Dell inspiron 1100. After many tries I "succeed" (with internet) in solving partially the issue related to the video chipset (Intel 82845G Graphics) by using a "vesa" driver in the xorg.conf. Some discussion here mentioned the possibility of deleting ASCI 8086:2562 from a blacklist in usr/bin/compiz but even with ghex editor I could not find any matching string. Hereafter my grub and xorg.conf for those who are interested. I have another issue now. How can I create an iso file of my installed xubuntu. I did download ubuntu 10.10 and created a CD but I migrated after to xubuntu (since most of the files were there) and it would be great to burn a CD of xubuntu.

This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.
The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.

I have a dell inspiron 530 desktop with core 2 quad and 4GB memory, running 32bit vista and 64 bit fedora 10. I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. Is there a way to revive the computer?

I have an old laptop, and am a basic linux user, but this install is crazy. I know that I have to have acpi=off to work, and got Linux Mint 7 installed from the live cd but want Xubuntu. The Xubuntu 9.1 live CD works fine as long as I put the acpi=off parameters in the boot string, and I check the additional options just to be sure. But after install I cannot even get into the grub, it says grub loading for a split second then blinking cursor

Has anyone got Ubuntu 10.04 working on their Dell Inspiron 1100? Most of the time, the screen goes black a short time after boot. Sometimes it goes black right after the splash screen, sometimes I get to log in and then it goes black a little later. Same results when trying to boot into "safe graphics" mode. Ubuntu 7.10 works fine on this machine (although I had to do some special configuration in xorg.conf to get it to work way back when I installed it.) However, it does not appear to be possible to manually configure X in 10.04. I tried disabling the splash screen in grub based on suggestions I found for other Ubuntu versions, but that had no effect on the problem.
Is it possible to replace X with the most recent version that could still be manually configured? Would anyone know how to go about doing that?
Alternatively, if it's impossible to get this old machine to run new versions of Ubuntu, has anyone had success with (relatively) new versions of other distros on it?

I have a persistent liveusb with ubuntu 9.10 that I installed using the method on [url]
I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.
I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on a liveusb using the method on [url]
After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:
Wireless Networks
Device not ready
A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Arch Linux with an Intel 965 GM video chipset (from dmesg). I'm using the xf86-video-intel driver, and Xorg (using xfce4) works flawlessly, including compositing. Before getting into details about the HDMI, I'd like to ask why I don't gave an xorg.conf.d/10-moniter.conf, it's not there, just evdev, quirks, and synaptics (because I figured that moniter.conf could be modified to include HDMI). So, basically when I'm on my XFCE4 desktop, I plug in the HDMI cable and to the TV, and on windows, it would would work, but on Arch the TV just says: "No input", and my desktop just stays the same, so absolutely nothing happens. If I have it connected upon bootup, the HDMI displays (the BIOS and grub menu on the TV) until I select to boot Arch linux on Grub, then the tv screen goes blank. I've tried Googling this but I got no decent results, just a bunch of random posts of audio not working with Nvidia.
PS - I did dmesg and lspci (with grep HDMI) and no results, so maybe it doesn't even recognize it, but then what do I do? There's obviously Linux support for HDMI...
