Firefox is set to launch automatically at startup. It regularly starts up in offline mode. Then, once wireless connection is established, I have to restart FF in order to get it to browse the net.
This has been amply discussed and fixes have been suggested. I've tried at least three modifications using FF's 'about:config', but to no avail.

I recently did a fresh install of 10.10 (previously I had 10.04). I could not do an upgrade because the package manager had a problem with unresolved dependencies resulting from the installation of a Nokia package for my CS-15 usb modem.
Since it was a new install, I did fresh backups of everything I needed, including evolution. After the install I tried restoring my email from the backup. Then I noticed that the send/receive button was disabled and so was the option to work online in the file menu.
The version of evolution is 2.30.3.
I thought this thread:
Had an answer to my problem but it appears to be something different. (still can't post URLs... not enough posts to date)
I tried deleting the .evolution folder in my home directory (as suggested in that other thread) and then re-installed evolution. That didn't work, however. I still have the same problem.
Oddly enough all my account details are still there! I tried checking the supported authentication and that seems to work.
I've trawled a number of forum posts in this and other forums but haven't seen this problem described anywhere.
How I can get my email to function again?
I have installed Claws Mail and can now access my mail without recourse to a web portal. However, this is a very unsatisfying work-around and I'd really like to get Evolution working again. One very strange thing: shortly after installing Claws I tried Evolution again and for that one session everything was OK. Now it is stuck in offline mode again.

I don't have any connection issues, but Firefox always starts in offline mode. I can uncheck it and everything works fine. If I close and reopen it Firefox switches back to offline mode.

i installed smeegol out of curiosity. and i am planning on keeping it installed as a alternative desktop. so "get rid of smeegol" is not an acceptable answer to my question. my question is also not so much about how can i turn this behaviour off but i wanna understand whats going on. here it is:when i log out of kde and start smeegol i am in offline mode per default. now thats unconfortable but i can live with it. what is however very weired and this is what the question is all about: when i leave smeegol with
init 3
init 5
and i start kde again my network manager doesnt start properly. i tried switching to traditional and switching back. still not working i tried killing the processes and restarting them still not working. i tried restarting my hole pc (i know stupid but it was a desperate move) still not working i tried a dozen other things that are even more desperate the only thing that got my network working again was starting smeegol again and switching to online mode
then ctrl + alt + backspace
and back into kde
suddenly i am online again
this is confusing how can smeegol my network manager up that hard that even a restart wont get it connected.

I recently bought a monthful of Spotify Premium to enjoy music at the school with my laptop and Nokia E71 with the offline mode - the WiFi at our school is too laggy to stream online music. Under wine, it works quite fine, however, I would totally like to use the native client (yes, I'm too a "yay linux" person like all of you here ), but the music quality is very poor on offline mode. It clips, goes forward, a second back, then back forward etc. The bitrate sounds to be high, an the quality is very good except the annoying clipping.
Anyone else experiencing this? I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Beta release with Samsung N510 so the cpu power should not be an issue even though the native client uses the resources very greedily. Interesting enough, on my desktop computer (Core2Quad @ 3,3GHz, 4GB 900MHz DDR2 RAM) with the same OS version and software plays offline playlists smoothly (only some occasional clipping)

Linux downloaded new updates and worked perfectly. Next time I started mint, just before the login screen appears display says No Signal and goes in sleep mode. I think that mint downloaded somekind of display driver update wich is not compatible with my driver card. I can't see desktop, I just hear the login sound and that's all. What should I do? I'm new with linux.

My linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.

I just updated to emacs23 from emacs22 (sudo apt-get install emacs2). I find that I now have a problem with org mode structured lists not appearing. A single asteriks on a line by itself no longer appears highlighted and no longer collapses and expands using the tab key.

I am running a dual boot system. I have XP on one HD and Ubuntu 10.04 on the other. No problems. I boot back and forth all the time. Then came along Natty. Now I tried to boot over, and I get "Cannot display this video mode". I have it set up that when I restart, if im away from the computer, Ubuntu starts by default. So it eventually starts in ubuntu. But the screen where I used to be able to choose which operating system to boot into is now replaced with "Cannot display this video mode".
I am not wireless, and nothing has changed as far as hard wear. The monitor is some old Dell that worked perfectly fine with 10.04. I tried changing my resolution and settings to every different one, and restart, and still no dice.
To sum it up, after my update to Natty, when I reboot, my OS selection screen is no longer visible. Its now replaced by "Cannot display this video mode".
So now it seems, what ever setting this screen is running on, XP dont like it..... because of Natty?
I gotta get some work done in XP, so right now im screwed. My CRT is currently sitting outside in the rain. Or I would try it.

I'm brand-new to Linux and Ubuntu, and I need to install Wine. I'm installing it on an offline computer, (I'm using Windows on the online pc), and I'm in need of the extra libraries required for proper Wine installation. The easiest way I've seen is to download/install the libraries via internet through the terminal. I can't though, because the computer's offline.

I have a Debian 8 system here running off an SSD with a five-drive RAID5 array (md0). I can reboot this machine just fine until I do an apt-get update and upgrade, at which point it fails to boot. I get the following:
A start job is running for /media/Storage (the mount point for md0)
Afterwards it dumps me into emergency mode. journalctl shows me these worrisome lines:
Timed out waiting for device dev-md0.device.
Subject: Unit dev-md0.device has failed.
Now, I have a backup image of this installation from right before running apt-get update and upgrade. If I restore that image, Debian boots fine and mounts the array successfully every time. Until I update and upgrade again. I've seen it happen three times now.

I have a laptop on a wireless network in a apartment building, but the server is in the manager's office, the signal is real good. I also have a desktop with no wireless or wired connection. My question is how do I transfer my apps from my laptop to my desktop in offline mode?
I don't want to install a wireless card for my desktop. Is there a way to install synaptic while offline? Or is there a way to install these apps from a flash drive to my desktop, if so how would I do that?

Currently I am using Fedora 15. My question is - how do I build repository in fedora using fedora installation DVD and later on I can install the software from that repository? Second issue is - my friend don't have internet connection. So, how do I install the software like - VLC, amarok, and other players offline? I have downloaded software from RPMFusion, but I am unable to install them. During the installation process, it shows error like - "Can't install src.rpm". There is any other resources where I can get the rpm files so that I can download them and send to my friend and he can install it without any internet connection?

I am trying to access an OpenBSD system that I have just installed via my PcBSD system by the use of a serial cable. I have been trying both minicom and cu but I am obviously doing something wrong... cu -l /dev/cuad0 returns /var/spool/lock/LCK...cuad0 Permission Denied. Can't Open lock file. all ports busy. And when I try to connect through minicom I either get a similar lock error, or minicom will sit at the connection screen with (offline status). I feel like the answer to my problems is a rather simple one, but I do not know where else to look for information.

Minicom was running fine two days ago capturing data from a gage device via a serial cable. Yesterday, users of the data started complaining that they were not receiving any data.
The minicom status line reads offline. Is this part of the problem or is this normal (I never really noticed it before.) All settings on the gage device match the minicom settings.
