I have a USB flash drive, which is bootable and I would like to copy the whole drive to a different drive.Can I just do a low level dd copy between both USB memory drives, or do I need to make an ISO of the source, and then put that ISO on the destination? I figured I could ask in less time than trying, and exhaustively testing to make sure I had it right...

I boot up a Linux appliance entirely in RAM, ie. the image has a Linux kernel and an attached ext2 root filesystem.
Now that it's working, I would like to copy the root filesystem from RAM to a NAND flash memory.
Can I just mount the NAND, run "cp -a /* /mnt/nand", reboot with the kernel command line "root=/dev/mtdblock2 rw", and expect Linux to be happy... or is it more involved than this?

View 2 Replies View Relatedcopy a compact flash card with a form of Linux on it (Found out it was custom version based on Fedora Core 3). The flaky USB card reader seems to have hosed the flash card, it shows up with unknown volume after ejecting the card and reinserting it. My troubleshooting: I have Ubuntu on a flash drive that I used to start all this to read the flash card.
- I tried Disk Utility to reformat the card as Master Boot Record and the volume as ext3 with flag set to Bootable and copied the files using cp in command line.
- I tried ISO Master & mkisofs to make an ISO that the USB thumb drive tools can use, but it wouldn't copy all the files. Looks like symbolic links either were ignored or couldn't find the source file with -f.
- I learned that I might need a boot partition with a boot image, which I think I have in initrd-2.6.14.7img, but I don't know how to do that. Do I also need a swap partition?
My updated goal: using the files from the flash card, make a bootable compact flash card with Fedora Core 3.
I removed the one I had because of some security alert. But lots of sites don't work with the 32 bit one with the wrapper so I'd like it back.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been playing around with a Ubunto 10.04 live cd (32bit) on my mac. I want to be able to boot this OS (or similar) on my Mac, and on any other computer (PC or Mac). I also want it to remember changes and files. From looking around this is possible from a USB (with a Casper RW loop file I think). I have used the Live CD to create a bootable flash drive, which works on PC's but not my mac. Using these instructions: [URL] I was able to get my Mac to see the Linux at boot but once I clicked the Tux icon it would hang/ freeze. I let it sit for 10+ min and nothing happened. I started over (with a fresh formatting) and got the same results. I have reformatted the flash drive and am ready to try over. I think that I am goofing up in terminal steps as I am not use to doing that. After the last step in the terminal I get an error, something like invalid number or similar, it is not the one mentioned in the instructions.
I know that this for advanced users, I am not yet but working that way. I an a (retired) power windows user, moderate Mac user and a new Linux user. I want to learn which is why I am asking. I am not in a spot to install Linux directly on my Mac, so I I am seeking help to do it on a flash drive. I want the ability to run off any computer and I see this as I way to get there.
I have a 2GB usb flash drive and I wanted to boot a linux distro from it. My dilemma is that I'm having a hard time balancing size with quality.I've been going the virtual route so far in my linux studies but the variety with hardware is so limited. I am pretty much a noob when it comes to Linux. But I desperately need to do exactly what the title of this thread says.I have this ISO file which is a bootable CD image. But instead of booting off of a CD, I want to boot from a USB flash drive. I understand that I can't simply just burn it with ImgBurn or whatever, and then just drag and drop the files and folder to a USB flash drive. Because hidden files, bootloader, etc. would not be visible and not copied. I know I'm in for some special software in order to copy every single byte from that ISO image to my USB flash drive.
I did try extracting the ISO with PeaZip (7-zip based) under Windows Vista, but that didn't work out very well. It resulted in a few files and folders, totaling in at about 2 KB, while the source ISO file is actually some 50 MB. WinRAR, on the other hand, would simply just create an empty folder where to put the files (no files created/extracted), flash before my eyes and call it a day ("complete").I have learned from other posters on other forums that there is this Unilx program/command called DD. How can I use DD to accomplish this task?
I am trying to flash my bios but they only supply an exe or a floppy image. obviosly I am not running windows to run the exe and I dont have a floppy drive. So I have been trying to copy the floppy image to a cd with little success.Size of boot image is 2884 sectors -> genisoimage: Error - boot image 'F1B.IMG' has not an allowable size.The way I understand it thats 4 sectors over the 1.44Mb floppy size? Is there a way I continue anyway? Seeing that I will be putting it on a cd I cant see that the size is going to matter

I don't have anything in /var/cache/yum/i386/12/adobe-linux-i386/packages/ because I think I cleared yum's cache. I'm experiencing major regressions with flash 10.1, stuttering videos and some videos no longer play. Version 10.1 is a major disaster for adobe. It really is appalling for an update. Also, if anyone else is experiencing flash version 10.1 issues, please share and if anyone is considering upgrading to it, my advice is keep the old one handy, you will likely need it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired (another) older laptop in need of a hard drive. Lower capacity IDE laptop drives are getting hard to come by from reliable sellers. I'd like to rewire a USB port, and run it into the hard drive slot, running the system off a flash drive rather than a hard drive. I'm running in to the problem I can't find any way to set it up. The system does not support any BIOS options for messing with USB drives. Why it CAN boot off one is beyond be, it's not in the temp boot menu, but when I leave it in, it boots off USB by default. I tried loading Ubuntu, and I have tried copying the files off of a setup hard drive to the flash drive, but I have yet to be successful. Is it even possible to run a linux off a flash drive so I can keep a desktop environment, rather than having it reset to the default ISO state every time I reboot?

Since then, I have been unable to get any sound out of flash. All other sound sources work fine.
I installed Boxee on my 64bit install. I had to edit the DEB so it did not install Flash, because Ubuntu still insists on installing the 32bit version which always borks Firefox.
But now I cant run synaptic without getting complaints of broken packages. I just want to blacklist boxee from from annoying the hell out of me, but keep it installed. How do I go about doing that?
I wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. i've suddenly got problems with flash - it was working fine until a cuple of days ago.i have flash 10.1.82. 76 ubuntu0.10.04.2 on ubuntu 10.04, but videos and other flash sites tell me i need to upgrade to the latest flash version 10.i've tried flash-aid, which seems to run ok but i still have the problem.at the same time, i can suddenly only run firefox tools > add-ons in safe mode - if i choose tools > addons in normal mode, fx locks up completely, and finally gives me the option to force quit. i've tried re-enabling add-ons one at a time, but no problem until i come out of safe mode.i'm wondering if this is a firefox problem rather than ubuntu or flash. my firefox is 3.6.8
