This is my first even moderately successful venture with linux, I had a virus ridden HD which I formatted, and then installed Mint distro. I then shut down, removed the HD and turned my desktop back on. I then receive the Error 15 notification while booting, and don't know how to solve this problem. I've tried sudo update-grub, but I get a notification that the terminal can't find it. Would it be safe to delete anything concerning the GRUB from my primary OS system files?

I have a 500 gig external usb, and a few 8 gig flash drives. If i copy a file (say a movie or large file) from my primary hard drive (80 gig WD formatted to ext3) to a usb drive it transfers very slowly, about 2 mb/s. But if I copy a file off my secondary internal drive (40 gig seagate formatted to ntfs) it transfers full speed (25-30 mb/s) Its also very slow transfering between internal hard drives (again, no more than 5 mb/s) I checked and as far as i can tell both drives are running in DMA mode. Any reason my primary seems to be causing this bottleneck? it seems to preform fine otherwise (as it is the drive with my ubuntu installation on it)

I just installed Ubuntu a week ago on a computer that my grandma wiped windows off of by accident...unsure how.
I have a Macbook Pro laptop that is currently not working. Had some water poured on it by a drunk girl. (Oh the misfortunes of computers)
I would like to take the hard drive (and possibly other usable parts) of the macbook and add them to this desktop.
My question(s):
Can I add the old hard drive to my new computer without formatting and erasing the data, thus having access to all of my goodies?
OR
Is there a way to transfer the data over to my new computer BEFORE I format?

how to transfer large files from my laptop to external hard drive. Problem occurs when I'm sending Blu-ray films (4.4GB) to external, gets to 4GB and then comes up with error. Is there any way of breaking it up and then merging when it reaches the hard drive or is there a way of sending it as one whole file.

I did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted. I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message I am given means I think it could be trying to fchk it. Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd?

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

I use Unity 11.04 on a 64-bit machine with 8Gig and a TB hard drive, so resources shouldn't be a problem. The pane on the left hand side (showing my computer main folders has disappeared when I click on "Home Folder". So has the ability to have two panels. I can see the hole folders but not any of the extra folders (dragged folders or usb sticks).
I now use Krusader which solves most of my problems. However there is a folder of files I use a lot, so before I lost this ability I had draged the folder to the left hand column showing all my folders. Now I can't access the folder I had dragged to the left hand panel, and it seems to have disappeared from its original place.

Is there a way to auto run a script when a usb hard drive is plugged in without creating a udev rule or something similar. The idea is that no matter which computer I plug the drive into it runs the script automatically (I want to EXPORT some directories when the drive is plugged in)?

I would like to install Ubuntu (latest stable) on a VirtualBox machine, set it up, install several apps, and then deploy it on a real PC. I think the main issue is the new hardware (which sould be different from the 'virtual' one). What should I do at that time? Is Ubuntu able to detect and install the new hardware?

I have a Ubuntu server hosted on Amazon EC2. I need to create an automated backup scheme so I created another Ubuntu instance on my local network which is hosted in a virtual environment. I managed to transfer the necessary files between 2 machines on the same network using the rsync command:
rsync -azvv -e ssh /home/path/folder1/ remoteuser@remotehost.remotedomain:/home/path/folder2
How can I do the same thing but transferring files from my Amazon server to my local server? Is there a way I can achieve this with port forwarding, or by VPN, or anything else? It doesn't have to be rsync. If you know about a better method, kindly let me know.

I am using an embedded platform in which I have connected an external harddisk (/dev/sda). The SCSI driver is present and I am using the SG_IO interface for performing the SMART commands with the Hard Disk. (Unfortunately not all the HDIO ioclts are present. So I opted for the SG_IO ioctl). But the data transfer (reading/write data from/to sector) is not working with the SG_IO ioctls. So I searched for some other options. Later in one of the places, I found that we can actually mount the /dev/sda to some mount point in /mnt and then make a XFS file system (mkfs.xfs) of this.
And then we can create the directories and do file operations on this mounted directory. Here the simple read/write systems calls can be used for this. I was thinking about this implementation. But I am confused how I can map the actual LBA (Logical Block Address) to the device file offset. I mean if I want to write to the sector 5, there will be a LBA for it. So I can do lseek on my device and then write the data there. So how the mapping between LBA and device file offset can be calculated.

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.
