View 8 Replies View RelatedI completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?

When running and I right click on the usb icon at bottom they show up but shaded and will not let me select any uSB device. In Device Manager USB appears to be installed but NO DEVICES SHOW UP. I also have a thermal printer hooked to com1 serial how I make my Virtual Machine recognize it?

View 10 Replies View RelatedSince a few weeks I cannot open a console in vmware server 2.0.2 anymore. I don't know exactly when this started because I use vmware only occasionally (I have only 1 program (an old Ashlar DrawingBoard) which does not run properly in wine). VMware server and the console have been working before without problems, but now I get the message "Cannot connect virtual machine console." and it times out. This is on Opensuse 11.1 with VMware Server on the same pc, Firefox and the guest is Windows2000.
I have tried to disable all extensions in firefox 3.6, disabled the firewall, even created a new user (on the same pc) with a clean firefox, all without any result. However when I connect from a different computer which runs Internet Explorer under windowsXP, then I can get the console without problem.
So, somewhere there is something wrong between Firefox and VMware server.
I'm running CentOS 5.5 x64 and have just installed VMWare Server 1. I am able to create a new Virtual Machine, but when I go to power on the VM in order to install the OS (windows server 2003), either the host crashes/reboots (with "Run in Debugging Mode" turned on) or the VM simply does not start (with that Debugging box unchecked) and in the log there is an error along the lines of VMware Server unrecoverable error (vmx)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running a 64bit Version of Windows 7. I'm also dual-booting 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 (if it matters). However, for this I'm trying to get this working on the Windows 7 side of things. I downloaded the BackTrack 5 32bit GNOME .iso file (BT5-GNOME-32.iso) to my USB stick fine and made a VM on VMware Player. I set the OS as "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel" (if it matters). However, when I go to play my VM I get the following screen. I know I'm supposed to type Startx to launch the GUI. However, nothing happens; it's completely unresponsive (and yes keyboard focus is routed to the VM). There is no response, the cursor doesn't even blink.

I was thinking of a way to protect those machines in the long run with the presence of some students with destructive behaviour. The most suitable solution to install a Linux OS and use virtual machines to load Microsoft OS. This way once the OS fails I can simply replace the VM with a clone that was previously made.
The point is that most students have no experience with Linux, that's why I need to load the Virtual machine automatically at login and in full-screen view so that The startup process ends up in Microsoft OS through the virtual machine (VMWare based) in Linux platform.
update : I'm using Fedora13 Linux distribution. I believe that part of launching the VM in full-screen is more difficult than automatically launching VMWare at startup. Is there some way I can tell VMWare to launch a particular virtual machine in full-screen when it starts on boot?

I have a WindowsXP virtual machine which I need to isolate from the host machine completely (have the host act as a bridge but not be visible on the IP layer at all.) It still needs to have Internet access. Obviously it has to be able to contact the router but I would like to be able to block port 80 (or even just block all SYN packets addressed to the router.) I also want to allow port forwarding from the router to the virtual machine. I can use basic iptables but this is way beyond me.
The host OS is probably going to be Debian Lenny but this is not built yet so if someone can recommend a different distro which is as lightweight as possible but will support VMWare, iptables and tcpdump then that would be great. I was thinking of Slackware but I have not used it in ages and from what I can remember their is no real package management.
I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.
My questions begin with Virtual Box. I have Windows XP installed via Virtual box. Ordinarily, I hate everything about windows, but unfortunately some things related to my job I am still in need of having some access to some form of Windows. I am wanting it to recognize all of my multiple hard drives that are installed on this system, 4 of them to be exact, so that I can utilize files from all of them.

I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

hda has Debian Lenny installed (with swap) and is to remain.
hdb1 has a linux distro on it.
hdb2 is a data partition and is to remain.
No other partitions on hdb.
HDD is data only (not really relevant but mentioned for completeness)
The system boots via Grub from MBR on hda.
I'm trying to install F10-i686-KDE-LiveCD on hdb1 but F10 won't allow it without modifying the partition tables which will, of course, wipe my data on hdb2. hdb seems to be a happy disk; e2fsck shows it clean and both partitions open properly in Konqueror within the LliveCD.
So I tried to install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire ASE380 desktop, and I think during the partition portion. I think I messed up the hard drive.
Now my computer won't recognize my hard drive. I've tried using the acer repair disks I made, I tried unplugging and checking all the cords and lines, I tired flashing the BIOS, I've tried using other boot disks like Ultimate boot CD, and Acer support is no help either.
I really don't know what to do now. It shows nothing in the boot setup or the BIOS set up. I've also tired the ALT - F10 for acer computers to enter and repair partition and nothing.
I just want to get this thing up and running. I'm tempted to just buy a new hard drive.
I've been trying for hours now to get Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix onto my HP Mini 1030NR. It boots up fine from the flash drive, but then when I go to install UNR on the hard drive I get through the first 3 steps and then get stuck. It goes to the "Prepare partitions" screen but no devices are shown to be partitioned. I formatted the hard drive I'm trying to install on on another computer to NTFS, so it should be blank and ready to go? I should probably mention the drive doesn't show up in GParted either. Is there something obvious I'm overlooking?

I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 64bit on my computer, I downloaded it onto my flashdrive from [URL]... When I reach the installation screen all the boxes are checked except 4.4Gb of space available, I know I have enough space because I am using a 1TB hard drive, I also have Windows 7 installed and it recognizes my hard drive. I have tried this with my hard drive partitioned and unpartitioned. I only have 1 hard drive and it has never been part of a raid array. I've also looked on google and the Ubuntu forums and still can't find anything relevant

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have this laptop that I just reformatted in hopes of doing a dual boot between XP and FC4. It is an Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (the Wal-Mart special). I reformatted the drive; the Windows partition is in NTFS and then I have a 10GB partition in FAT32 for Linux. When I try to install FC4, the disk boots into the installer, then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drives (the disk in this laptop is a Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00). It asks me if I want to load any drivers, and I tried a few and still no success. Any way, after it goes through that, it tries to start anaconda and after that launches it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. So, did I do anything wrong in the Windows install that won't allow the disk to be found? The XP disk only allows a format in NTFS, otherwise I would have done FAT32 on the whole drive. Second, is the anaconda problem something related to the HDD issue, or does anyone think that it may be a separate issue?

But the ubuntu installer doesnt see my hard disk. when i run fdisc -l, the only thing that i see is my usb from wich i'm booting. My 13 year old Pentium 3 1.3 ghz machine is finally ready to call it quits. specifically, my slave drive where all of my music is stored. I can access a very small portion of the the files on the HD, The files are still there but are not showing up. any ideas on how I could access this drive. I wanted to try to reinstall my os on the primary drive in hopes that it wouldget it working, unfortunately I've run into what's seems to be a common problem of my usb keyboard not being recognized.

Anyway, I have found that my bios does not recognize the hard drive when formatted to ext2! I have taken the drive and formatted it back to ntfs, and my bios recognizes it, and then back again to ext2, and nope, it's not there, thus I am still booting puppy from the cd...sigh...
Is my bios so out of date that I'm just out of luck? Is there anyway to check this?
