General :: Touchpad Sensitivity Scales To Virtual Screen Dimensions?
Jul 11, 2011
I am experimenting with attaching a second monitor to my Ubuntu Natty laptop, and I have noticed an annoying "feature" that makes any multi-monitor setup so unusable that I actually prefer my single-monitor laptop setup. It appears that the system automatically "scales" the X- and Y-axis sensitivity of the touchpad to match the dimensions of the "virtual" screen that spans across multiple monitors. This is best illustrated with an example. If I set up two monitors side-by-side, the touchpad's X-axis speed is doubled, so that moving my finger the same distance on the touchpad causes the mouse on the screen to move twice as far in the X direction as it did when I had only a single monitor. Yet the Y-axis sensitivity remains unchanged, so all diagonal mouse movements end up at the wrong angle. This makes the touchpad almost completely useless, since the mouse on the screen does not move in the same direction as my hand on the pad.
Is there anything I can do about this? I just want the X- and Y-axis speeds to be identical, and I definitely don't want my mouse sensitivity changing because I added a screen. The touchpad is a Synaptics touchpad, by the way. The laptop is a Dell M1330 with an nVidia graphics card.

using gsynaptics to increase the touchpad sensitivity on my macbook 4,1. However, installing gsynaptics makes my fans increase to 6000rpm every 10 minutes. I uninstalled gsynaptics, and it no longer does that. But, I want greater sensitivity! =( its a catch 22.Is there a manual way to increase sensitivity without installing gsynaptics? or another alternative tool?

A while ago, while moving my LCD monitor, something struck the screen causing some pixels to go black. Months later those pixels grew to a long vertical stripe down the right side of my screen. I'm constantly having to move pallets out of the way so I can see what I'm doing.
Is there a way to change the geometry of the X server to be something like 1800x1080 instead of 1920x1080?

I believe it is PS/2 but I am unsure. There isn't an option in the GNOME interface to edit this, either. Am I missing some sort of GNOME utility, or what?

I'm not afraid of bash but I'm not very good with it either. I'm assuming there's a way of using find, perhaps in conjunction with another tool, to find images in a directory (and subdirectories) based on their dimensions?
Specifically, I want to find all the landscape-oriented images and copy them somewhere else.

Does anyone else know of a terminal emulator that scales the fonts automatically when a window is resized?
My eyesight is horrible but I want to use more terminal applications. I also use AwesomeWM for tiling, so windows resize frequently. Also on the short list are cut/paste by keyboard and good support for launching links.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 When my cursor hovers over an icon for not more than a second, if that, the folder opens; it's the same with links. I barely have to touch Firefox, and it comes up. I'd like to be able to click on a folder rather than just pass over it. Surely there must be a setting that can be change

How you disable it? it makes no sense you have to type all those non capital and capital letters just to access a directory correctly.
in windows you just type the name and it detects whatever you type capital or not...

Running Lucid, has been a bit glitch here and there, but generally ok. I use Audacity a lot, so need "drag" with the mouse. Also "drag" on the desktop has gone totally now it just opens the file or folder. Any mouse control app that works? Using a ps2 led mouse, it works fine under wine/crossover apps.

I just replaced my old Logitech mouse with a Microsoft Wireless Laser mouse, and the scrolling is too fast for my liking.
How can I adjust the scroll sensitivity?
I just updated to 10.04, but still don't see anything.

I have installed virtualbox because i wanted to run .exe files for my job. After installation and configuration it asked me to reboot. From that moment when reboots it returns the full symbol of fedora and then the screen becomes black with white letters. I couldn't login ever again. I am new in Fedora, i don't have a backup of my files and i cant't work. I think that this could be a command line or something like this. Is there any possibility to login even once to copy my files to another disk and then to setup Fedora again?

I am running Puppy from a usb in Windows 7 using Virtual Box and I can't get the 1280 x 800 screen resolution to work. The probe doesn't recognize my monitor initially in the video setup. When I choose this screen resolution in the xorgwizard it ignores the resolution I select and uses 1600 x 1200. If I try to reduce the resolution in the resolution changer, it decreases the window size but the desktop stays at the same resolution effectively cutting off the majority of the desktop from view. I have been trying the intel, radeon, vesa, and vmware drivers but none of them seem to work. Do I need to install a special video driver? I am using a unibody macbook.

Is there a flag or option to discard case sensitivity to find whether package is installed or not?
from http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/s1-rpm-query-parts.html
Quote:
Note, however, that RPM is a bit picky about specifying package names. Here are some queries for the C library that won't work:
Code:
rpm -q libc-5.2.1
Let say I want to find out whether PyQt is installed or not but not sure the exact case, i.e. pyqt or Pyqt or ....
is there a way to find whether a package is installed or not without knowing its case exactly?

Does anyone know the pixel dimensions for the panels.I want to design a panel background image in gimp for the entire panel but I don't know how many pixels they are from left to right. I know (or I think) that they are 24 pixels from top to bottom but how many across?
I have designed images to use as panel backgrounds but they tile so it's like one consistent thing as I don't know the dimensions for the length of panels, only the 24 pixel height. I've attached a couple so try them out, they're pretty cool.

I'm running Fedora 13 (fully updated) with Firefox 3.6.3 and I'm noticing that Firefox isn't remembering window dimensions across launches (eg. I have to resize Firefox everytime I run it). This is affecting the main Firefox window as well as the bookmarks window.

This is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.

But how to enable touchpad click at the login screen?

I am loving my Ubuntu machine, but there's a slight annoyance that I can't seem to disable. Is there anyway to disable the tap-click on the touchpad of a laptop while on the login screen? I do not want to disable the click from the button, but rather when you gently tap it with your finger. The options for it in the Control Center doesn't seem to disable it during the login screen.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS. My laptop is an HP Pavilion TX1210AU (TX1000 series). After disabling the touchpad using the toggle button and reenabling it again, it stopped working. I tried restarting my laptop and the mouse worked again only up to the Login Screen. After logging in to my account, the mouse froze again. I tried making a new account and tried logging into it (I'm using it now) and it's now fixed. Does Ubuntu change any user settings everytime the touchpad toggle (on/off) button is switched? Maybe I could just reenable it myself.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and encountered several issues.
1. The Synaptics touchpad is nearly unusable. It is impossible to drag while holding down a button. The cursor will move randomly across the screen instead. It is impossible to right click; a right click is treated like a left click. Double-tapping the dot in the corner does not disable the touchpad.
2. Attempting to change the brightness will kill the screen. The computer is still functioning, and it is possible to perform tasks "blind." Only the screen becomes completely blank.
3. Ubuntu does not always boot up reliably. When it does not, the screen is blank but the computer is otherwise responding.
4. The screen is black after suspend.
5. The computer will sometimes hang when shutting down (showing desktop background). Possibly related messages in dmesg:
[Code].....
