Ubuntu :: List The Images In A Directory With Their Dimensions?
Feb 20, 2010
I want to list the images in a directory with their dimensions, if possible in order of their widths (all the wider pictures come first) - this is not strictly necessary,

I'm not afraid of bash but I'm not very good with it either. I'm assuming there's a way of using find, perhaps in conjunction with another tool, to find images in a directory (and subdirectories) based on their dimensions?
Specifically, I want to find all the landscape-oriented images and copy them somewhere else.

would someone explain to me (or point me to an explanation) the list of cd/dvd images available for download. I downloaded Lenny on one cd long ago installed it and everything was ok. Now I notice there are about 5 or 6 dvd's and over 30 cd's for download. I notice that there is one cd for 6.0 i386 KDE version that I presume is the same as I used long ago.

When I run "ls -al somedir*" (I use the "ll" shortcut, actually), Linux not only list files that match, but also the contents of directories whose name also happens to match. Is there a way to limit "ls" so that it will only show names (files and directories) and ignore the contents of the directories?

Does anyone know the pixel dimensions for the panels.I want to design a panel background image in gimp for the entire panel but I don't know how many pixels they are from left to right. I know (or I think) that they are 24 pixels from top to bottom but how many across?
I have designed images to use as panel backgrounds but they tile so it's like one consistent thing as I don't know the dimensions for the length of panels, only the 24 pixel height. I've attached a couple so try them out, they're pretty cool.

I'm trying to create a Virtual Machine in VMWare Server for Linux. I'm at the part where it asks for an ISO image. The inventory is empty. I don't know what directory this actually corresponds to on my Linux system. I tried moving the .iso to my home directory but VMWare still does not see it.

I have uShare 1.1a setup to talk to my XBox 360. If I share a directory that has no subdirectories, the video files display on the XBox. However, most of my files are in sub-directories on a different partition - I don't really want to copy them to the share, but uShare doesn't seem to recognise any sub-directories or files contained therein.
I have tried setting up symbolic soft links directly to the video files (although this is a pain, it is better than moving the files)...
Code:
ln -s /home/jonftp/TV-Shows/Buffy/Season-1/Buffy-101.avi /home/share/Buffy-101.avi
...but these don't show up on the XBox either.
How can I get uShare to "drill down" the directory structure to list the files or how can I get uShare to follow symbolic links?

A while ago, while moving my LCD monitor, something struck the screen causing some pixels to go black. Months later those pixels grew to a long vertical stripe down the right side of my screen. I'm constantly having to move pallets out of the way so I can see what I'm doing.
Is there a way to change the geometry of the X server to be something like 1800x1080 instead of 1920x1080?

I am experimenting with attaching a second monitor to my Ubuntu Natty laptop, and I have noticed an annoying "feature" that makes any multi-monitor setup so unusable that I actually prefer my single-monitor laptop setup. It appears that the system automatically "scales" the X- and Y-axis sensitivity of the touchpad to match the dimensions of the "virtual" screen that spans across multiple monitors. This is best illustrated with an example. If I set up two monitors side-by-side, the touchpad's X-axis speed is doubled, so that moving my finger the same distance on the touchpad causes the mouse on the screen to move twice as far in the X direction as it did when I had only a single monitor. Yet the Y-axis sensitivity remains unchanged, so all diagonal mouse movements end up at the wrong angle. This makes the touchpad almost completely useless, since the mouse on the screen does not move in the same direction as my hand on the pad.
Is there anything I can do about this? I just want the X- and Y-axis speeds to be identical, and I definitely don't want my mouse sensitivity changing because I added a screen. The touchpad is a Synaptics touchpad, by the way. The laptop is a Dell M1330 with an nVidia graphics card.

I'm trying to generate a list of my music directory folder structure WITHOUT the files included. I have my music directory set up in a hierarchy of Artist>Album>Files, and I just want to generate a list of the folders because that will, in effect, output a list of what albums I have by what artists, which is ultimately what I'm after. I did some looking on the internet through various forums over the past few days and found two ideas that looked promising, but ended up being not exactly what I needed. The first was to generate a .txt file based off of a shell ls command:
ls -R [music directory name] >> ~/mymusiclist.txt
That's great, except that it also includes the 40,000+ individual music files by name. I'm not about to invest that much time editing the files out of the list when I know there has to be an easier way.The second idea I came upon involved using the extglob function. I tried enabling extglob and using it to input a "negative wildcard" into the above method to remove anything .mp3 from the returned list, but extglob didn't play well in that context. I'm not a command line wizard, so it's entirely possible that I'm missing something fairly obvious. In fact, I'm sure I am. So this is a great opportunity for me to learn something new. If anybody knows of a command line way to do this, I'd love to know it. Or, even better, if anybody knows of an app that can do this, even better. I'm not above installing a secondary music player just to import the library once and get my list.

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

What I'm trying to do: write a script that will list all the directories in a given location. Ask the user to enter a number corresponding to the location of the directory in the list, and then moving into that directory.
I have written a script to do this, but it only works when I run it as: <user>$program_name and the script runs in a sub-shell. But, when it is run in a sub-shell, the changes made by the script go away after the script ends.
When I run it as:
<user>$. program_name
and the script runs in the current source shell, I get an error:
bash: cd: /home/dev/Project/dirname: No such file of directory
Code:
IFS='
' read -d '' -a ArrName < <(ls ~/Projects)
read filenumber
cd $HOME/Projects/${ArrName[$filenumber]}

I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:
convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

I'm sure I've done this before and am having a brain fart.
I have run into this a couple of time this last month:
I have a list of torrent files (blahblahhexblah.torrent) saved in a text file. I would like to read the text file and populate the client directory.
I can echo the file using:
But I cannot remember how to pipe the output into the directory, nor can I find any resources that describe the process.
Interestingly enough, I've had a couple of opportunities to do similar tasks with passwords and privileges and even across the LAN in the last few days. Solving this problem will help me solve the others for next time.

item1 is a FILE
item2 is a DIR
item3 is a DIR
etc etc.
I am able to get the list of files into a variable, but unsure how to get the output I want.

I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others. And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist? It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.
