General :: Thinstation Bootable Cd Stuck At 'Booting Kernel'

Jan 14, 2011

First off im very new to linux and have only been involved with linux for a couple days. Anyways, let me explain what i'm attempting todo. I want to make a DVD to automatically restore a partition without any human interaction other than inserting the dvd and turning the pc on. I'm using norton ghost 11.5 to restore the image and im using thinstation 2.2 as my OS.I have a cd that will boot up thinstation but then i would have to type in a command to have ghost start restoring the partition. so basically i figured i would put a script in the etc/init.d folder of initrd. so i extracted the contents of initrd using 7zip, put the script in the directory and then compressed initrd into .gz format. however now when i put the newly made dvd in i get stuck at "Booting the Kernel."

is this a problem with initrd format? if so what format does it need to be in and how to i get it into that format?is there some way to set the parameters of the kernel to fix this problem? and if so how do i go about doing that?

General :: Bootable Kernel Image Creation

Apr 20, 2010

the things i've tried:

1. Created an asm bootloader code that calls a c function which just prints a hello message.
2. Compiled both and linked them using LD command using a .ld file available.

Steps followed from http://wiki.osdev.org/Bare_bones.I get a kernel.bin file which is of ELF format. I've set up a tftp server using tftpd32 tool and created the necessary pxelinux.cfg files.

Now how do i create a bootable kernel image out of the elf file. The steps given in the above website to create an image doesn't help.

General :: LFS 6.8 Not Booting Into Right Kernel

Jun 2, 2011

I have been following along with Linux from Scratch 6.8 and everything has been going well. I got past an issue with GRUB (Ubuntu 11.04 uses a different version of GRUB than LFS so caused some issues).

Now when I boot into the Linux kernel recommended in the LFS book, 2.6.37, I get the following kernel panic: "VFS: Cannot open root device "sdf6" or unknown-block(0,0)". I'm sure this means that I didn't load the right drivers when I configured the kernel. But I went back in and recompiled and chose every SATA driver listed and I still got that error. It does let me boot into the kernel that Ubuntu used (2.6.38) so I guess I'm ok. I just want to know how to get the 2.6.37 to compile right.

General :: Custom Kernel Not Booting

Oct 7, 2010

Had a custom kernel (2.6.35.5) running under Slackware 12.1 and also the same kernel on an Ubuntu 10.04 machine just fine, however after a clean install of Slackware 13.1 this kernel no longer works (This kernel was re-compiled with the same .config file under Slack 13.1) as I keep getting the the following: -Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,3) The strange thing is it keeps looking for the root file system in hda1, however the stock 13.1 kernel finds it in /dev/sda1 so the root partition is /dev/sda1 in lilo and the harddisk is known as /dev/sda.

Debian Installation :: Stuck With Blinking Cursor While Booting

Oct 31, 2013

I installed Debian 7.2.0 (amd64) on a Toshiba Satellite C870D-121 with the graphic installer. It already has Windows 8.1 installed on another partition, and for Debian I'm not using the same partition of course. Actually, the Debian installation is replacing a Ubuntu 13.10 installation that was working fine.

After choosing Debian in the Grub menu, I can see the boot log entries adding and then the screen clears and all I get is a blinking cursor. After a while, some '^@^@^@' symbols appears. Of course I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a virtual Terminal in order to login and try to investigate the problem, but so far I haven't been able to reliably identify the problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Booting Stuck At Splash Screen?

Nov 5, 2010

New install on Compaq Presario F700 (F756NR)The install went fine. I was able to get the Nvidia drivers working too. The problem I have is when the system boots. I get the OpenSuse splash screen, and the system just hangs.I found that if I press <Esc> and hit <Enter> a few times, the system will eventually boot. I also found if I wiggle the mouse during the splash screen, the progress bar will begin to move, and the system will boot.Seems to be something about detecting hardware during the boot phase, and it seems to be input related.

Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck With Black Screen On Booting After 10.04 Upgrade / Fix It?

Apr 30, 2010

Yesterday I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 via Update Manager. But when the upgrade procedure was finished and I made a reboot, I only come to the Ubuntu logo appears for a second, then the screen turns completely black and nothing happens. I then have to reboot via the power button.

But I can get it working with so far no problem, by booting to the third option in the boot options list. In the list there are several options, something like this code...

Now the question is; what does this mean when there are several alternatives with the same name? What is the difference between alternative 1 and 3, other than 3 is working and 1 is not? Is there any problem running alternative 3 instead of 1, and if so how do I get it to boot from alternative 3 as standard?

If this is not the right way to do it, how can I figure out what the error is on alternative 1?

General :: Booting Into Kernel - Error 13: Invalid Or Unsupported Executable Format

Sep 13, 2010

I've been playing around with trying to assemble a bare-bones Linux system on a disk.img file through a loop device. I compiled the most recent stable kernel and then copied it onto the root partition in the image. When I try to boot up into the image using qemu, grub gives me this:

Code:
Booting 'tiny'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinux
Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

Press any key to continue... I am confused because I compiled the kernel with 'make bzImage', and the architecture hasn't changed (qemu on the same machine used to build the kernel). So it should be bzImage format. Is that what this Error 13 means, or could it means something else is wrong...?

Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck Compiling Kernel Using Localmodconfig

Jun 13, 2011

I'm about to compile a custom kernel using localmodconfig using the guide on this page. Everything's gone well but now I'm stuck. Can anyone work out what the syntax of the part in bold below is supposed to be? I have tried all combinations, e.g. linux-source-2.6.35-Myimage, and a few other permutations. Nothing seems to work.

Ubuntu kernels build with debugging information on, which makes the resulting kernel modules (*.ko files) much larger than they would otherwise be. To turn this off, go into the config's "Kernel hacking"<!-- ; then, under "Kernel debugging", --> and turn OFF "Compile the kernel with debug info".I've hit a few brick walls on the way but they turned out to be wet cardboard.

Fedora :: Yum Update Install New Kernel - Boot Process Stuck

Mar 24, 2010

I'm not sure what caused it, but it happened right after running 'yum update'. It may be because it installed a new kernel, and there are now two kernels listed in my grub.conf and at boot; 2.6.31 and 2.6.32. System boots through a list of things it's starting up and stalls out at ATL or ADL or ADM maybe. It hangs there for a minute or so then flickers. This happens every time at boot. It's a bit difficult to post more information since I can't get past that part of the boot process, and I can't seem to be able to skip it either. It may be worth mentioning that this is a mini-itx motherboard. Intel Atom 330 1.6, 2GB DDR2, onboard GeForce 9400m. It's a zotac ionitx-a-u. I've installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12 lxde.

OpenSUSE Install :: Bootable USB Ended With "invalid Or Corrupt Kernel Image"?

Jan 5, 2011

I've just purchased HP Mini 5103 with preinstaled SLED, but I want to replace with 11.3. But I have serious problem with booting from USB. Due to problem with BIOS bug/feature, 5103 is unabled to boot using USB with recursive partition (which is created from hybrid openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso either with ImageWriter of dd). When I create bootable USB with syslinux and copying of iso to existing partition, I ended with error "failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive" (I have tried also both initrdud files, older one failed with "failed to detect USB", newer with "failed to detect CD"). I have also tried to install from full openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso which I have copied to USB using Unetbootin, but with this bootable USB I ended with "invalid or corrupt kernel image".
