View 2 RepliesI have installed on my computer Solaris10 (64bit version), PCBSD8 (64bit) on 2 primary partitions and 7 Linux distributions (Redhat,Debian,OpenSuse,Fedora,LinuxMint,Slackware,Ubuntu) on the extended partition. I know this might be a stupid question, but here it goes: I have a problem with my actual power supply unit (the fan doesn't work as it should) and I will change it soon. Is there a problem with any of the Linux distributions if I change my power supply unit? I mean, will the Linux operating systems work properly with a new power supply unit or do I have to reinstall all Linux distributions?

I am working on a traffic surveillance project which performs various image processing tasks with a number of visual sensors and a computing platform. My basic task in the project is the power optimization/management. I am using a ZOTAC-IONITX computing platform (Intel ATOM CPU + NVIDIA ION GPU). The problems that I am currently facing are:
I am unable to model the power consumption of various components e.g., processor, GPU, hard drive, memory etc, since there seems to be no way to measure the power consumption of individual system components. Since I don't have a power consumption model, I cannot come up with a power optimization algorithm. I am currently working on Linux. Is there any way to measure/model the power consumption of individual system component?
I have already checked powertop. It doesn't tells the power (watts) consumed by a component (e.g., microprocessor). It just gives information about the power state the processor is in (However there is no way to change the power state by the user) and the processors that cause processor to wakeup.
I just recently installed Ubuntu and my power supply cooling fan won't power down normally when I would run windows tho it would power down after the system was finished starting up. How can I remedy this?

The power supply will be replacing a 450 watt power supply and the video card will be replacing an ATI 5750 1 GB (Which currently doesn't work without 10.9, so far) The problem with these is that it doesn't meet the AMP rating of 38A of the GTX 470.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 500GB WesternDigital Elements external harddrive and recently I plugged it into my computer and noticed the green light on the power adapter didn't light up anymore. I'm assuming that the power adapter failed - is this a fairly safe assumption? I know it COULD be something else, but does this at least make sense to move forward?Coincidentally, I've been researching new externals to order a 1.5TB because the 500GB is full.
I'm contemplating two options:
1.) Replace the power supply for ~$40
2.) Take apart the external and mount it internally
If it is in fact the power supply it might be the best option to just replace the thing and have 2 externals for backing up data on. But if it turns out to not be the power supply I'm out $40.I'm not sure how taking apart the external and install the hard drive in a desktop computer would be. Is the harddrive a standard drive? Does it have all the same power cords a normal computer would? If so, I could just install it into my brother's desktop and retreive the data that way (and he'll have an extra 500GB hdd).
I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have a script that prompts you to insert a USB HDD/memory stick then it needs to determine its serial and model and save it to a file. The script can determine the device file of the inserted drive(ex: /dev/sdc) and if hdparm -I /dev/sdc works then all is ok. The problem is that not all USB HDDs/memory sticks work with hdparm. When it does not work I get the following:

The other command to get the serial for USB devices of any kind is lsusb -v or lsusb -D /path/to/bus/address The problem of the first one(lsusb -v) is that it lists all USB devices and there's no way for me to script it to detect the inserted USB drive/memory stick and get the serial/model for it. The problem with the second one(lsusb -D /path/to/bus/address) is that I do not know how to get the correct USB bus address of the inserted USB drive/memory stick.
Is there any other way to get the serial number/model of a USB HDD/memory stick using its /dev/sdc device file? Is there any way to link the /dev/sdc device file with the /dev/bus/usb/address device file so I can then use the lsusb -D command to get the required info?
My router/adsl modem is not connected to a power supply so when power goes and comes the network will do a re-boot. Now the problem is my OpenSUSE network won't come back on! I set the static ip as Autoeth0 to eth0 however when network updates I losse eth0. Why is this happening? Why doesn't the PC simply re-connect? Can I do it via command line?

To do so I was thinking the serial port and perl (as I don't know C ) how to check if a switch connected to a serial port is open or closed. Here is my plan, I'll plug a electric relay on the electric network and monitor the state of the switch. if the switch is closed, that mean that we are on the electric network if the switch is open that mean that we are on our diesel power generator.
PS: There will be no voltage input involve (although I can if that's required)
I'm planning to use this with Nagios to know if we are on the electric network or on our diesel power generator.
went through the tutorial on FedoraSolved for securing ssh. I installed denyhosts with yum and then tried to run it with the command line command"sudo /etc/init.d/denyhosts start" but I got the message"Job Failed. See system logs and 'systemctl status' for details [FAILED]"and in the application "services" in the applications menu,t shows an exclamation warning and says that "This unit has failed"

I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0
in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but
cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

Is ther anyway to simply get the result without having to supply a password and to see all user not only me. (i have the file open also).

I got a new computer and got it running Slackware64-current. It's motherboard is an ASUS M4A88TD-M and it's processor is an AMD Phenom II x4 965. I decided to get some chassis fans to improve it's thermal performance. But, since I started the computer after installing the new fan (only one of the 3 I got) the fan's speed is at max and it's very noisy. Crashed System left at root @ maintenance shell. Below is the sequence after boot, with Exact Errors. How to Salvage important files from my crashed laptop hardware.
A) Via a Transfer to a USB stick in Terminal, would be ok
B) Via SSH through the router from the good laptop that is Preferably using Nautilus / GUI, Terminal also ok (less confident of my skill here)
C) Directly Fixing Laptop and being ably to use Nautilus / GUI to Copy Files to USB stick, localy

A) the USB stick is good but Can't get in to it from the crashed laptop
B) SSH: No luck I get: "Cannot display location "sftp://192.168.1.101/"" from the good Machine

A good USB stick reads & writes in another laptop running Ubuntu 9.10. When I connect the USB to the Crashed Machine it starts with:
"assuming drive cashe: write through", and hangs on this tell I press: "Ctrl+C"
In the crashed machine I can't seem to get into the USB anywhere that I think it should show up and trying to "mkdri" got me:
"Read only file system".
When I try to mount a linux file system that was encrypted using cryptsetup I get the following error:

When the card is installed directly in the motherboard it gets IRQ17 or 18. I suspect that it does not really want IRQ0, but that there is some problem detecting the proper IRQ over the bus expander. One possible approach I am considering is to build a custom version of the driver where I can set the IRQ manually to something else just to get the driver to finish loading, then see what happens when I run the card. This would at least tell me which IRQ the hardware is really using and whether or not the 0 reported is correct or not.
I am writing some application in C, which will access a serial port device (RS232). My application is working good. But if any other application is already opened the port, I couldn't able to identify that. In windows VB program, while accessing comport through mscomm control, i am receiving an error as "Port Already Opened". But in Linux environment, through C program how can i get that? I am accessing comport 1 as follows

Had the update manager running this morning and it was in the install dpkg phase of the operation when the wonderful power grid I am on went down due to the thunderstorm we were having at the time. I was watching the update at the time the power failed and the install was not completed at the time the computer shut off. When power came back on and I restarted the computer, the log in screen came up only showing 1 and 1/2 of the 4 accounts I have on the computer. When I clicked on the one full account showing, nothing happened. After manually powering off at the tower button, and restarting, I was able to get a log in screen that was usable to log in.
I was even able to launch Firefox, although it is running extremely slow, and my audio properties will not come up and the pop down bar at the top that shows applications, places, etc, does not come down. Just overall, the whole computer does not run properly. Windows take forever to open, if at all, and forever to close, if at all, etc. Restart button does not work, etc. Is there any way to manually run update manager to re-install the parts that obviously are corrupt on the previous attempt at install? Or, is there anyway I can revert back to the status prior to the update attempt?
