Jan 3, 2011New user to Linux. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to a mini-laptop, but the built-in wireless card/chip is not working. It worked under the previous OS, XP. There is a switch on the case frame that enables it, but the active light did not turn on during installation. I installed a second time and manually flicked the switch every one second to see if it needed human intervention, but to no avail.
My next step was to try to update Ubuntu to see if it would help, so I inserted a Belkin USB wireless, but the connection was intermittent at best. I believe the device is faulty. A wired connection is impossible as I am sharing with my neighbor. What should I do to help Ubuntu the internal wireless device?

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Wireless - UNR 10.4 On HP Mini 210
Jun 1, 2010just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my new HP Mini 210 (info). Everything is working fine -- webcam, shortcut keys etc, but I'm having some difficulties connecting to our wireless network. When I click on the network panel item, there are no networks visible. Now, I also have Windows 7 Starter on the netbook (what I'm using right now) and that's able to connect to the network fine.

The "Additional Drivers" found two Broadcom 802.11b/g drivers, but when I downloaded it came up with errors and didn't work.

Jul 20, 2010I wiped and loaded my mini. ran the ubuntu 10.04.. had to run hardware drivers twice to finally get reference to broadcom and then wireless came on!! Hurray! however (yes, dhcp).. no dns on wireless but on eth0 no problem everything shows up ip, dns.. works fine.. go to wireless it connects, gets ip but in connection information no dns servers listed

Jan 31, 2010I successfully did a dual boot on a HP Mini 1001TU netbook. However, the wireless doesn't connect. Over the internet, someone had a similar problem with his Dell notebook using a Karmic and said that Karmic has a bug that doesn't install the "Broadcom STA wireless Driver" and recommended a prerequisite wired internet connection then the following command line:
sudo apt-get update
sudo-get -reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source
Followed by a reboot which solves the problem.
I would like to try this out but the netbook only accepts a USB -router connection but my router doesn't have a USB port.

May 23, 2010I'm a totally rookie at all this. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 Netbook edition in an HP Mini 1116 NR computer--I used an SD card & UNetbootin) and the wireless router is not recognized. I've been pretty much googling and troubleshooting this problem for most of the day. I always get stuck at a dead end. This netbook does not have an ethernet adapter nor a CD-Rom drive, so I have no way of connecting to the internet w/out wireless. I am able to download things from my other laptop to the SD card.
1. When I enter sudo apt-get install build-essential at the terminal, I get "package not found."
2. When I try to install b43-fwcutter or bcmwl-kernel-source, it either won't work because I can't connect to the net or I get a "dkms dependency" issue.
3. So I tried to install the dkms pacakge and got a "gcc dependency" issue. After that, I come up with a dead end.
An alternative option, so I read, is to use ndiswrapper and download the HP wireless broadcom driver, but that driver is a .exe file and I read that ndiswrapper needs a .inf file and I can't seem to find one. Does it matter?

The wireless works perfectly fine when I boot to Windows XP on the netbook, but not when I'm using Ubuntu. May 30, 2010Long term Fedora user, I have recently decided to set up a small shuttle computer as a media centre (using mythTV), data store/NAS (so all my data is centralized), mini web server, etc. After installing I had the fun of trying to get my audio working correctly (which I did eventually .. after finding out I unplugged the audio after the second reboot and solved it after somewhere). After this, I got internet video searching working through mythTV using adobe Flash. I then went to bed only to find the internet not working (can't telnet, can't traceroute, can't anything). This is both as the mythtv user I have set up and as root.
The setup I have is:
PC -> router -> interweb
192.168.1.7 -> 192.168.1.1 -> interweb
I also have a laptop (F12) which is on 192.168.1.5.
The laptop has access to the internet just fine (no problem at router / interweb).
I have the only access to the router and disabled any ISP access (no changes in router).
I have the only access to the PC (no changes in PC).
I have set SElinux to permissive (no selinux issues).
I have temporarily disabled iptables on the PC (not firewall issue).
So, I decided to look at the differences between my two machines on the network. Initially the PC was missing the route:

I changed the services on startup so thet 'NetworkManager' was off, but 'network' started (exactly like my laptop). I turned off avahi-daemon, and any other network sort of daemon which doesn't match my laptop (which I have also customized).

Would it be work me doing a tcpdump or wireshark dump etc ('tcpdump > file' would be easier for me)?

Sep 11, 2009I have an HP mini 110 with Fedora 11 install. I installed the broadcom-wl and wl-kmod from yum but still no wireless. First I can't get the broadcom card to turn on using the slide switch on the front of the computer. The device is inactive in the network configuration-devices window. The card is not in the network configuration hardware window. When I try to add it manually, there is no entry for the card in the drop down list. I am new to Fedora but have used linux for years. Unfortunately this is my first attempt at wireless networking.
The posts and google stuff doesn't say much more than "yum install broadcom-wl" Can anyone point me into the right direction? I have a feeling I am missing something very simple, because this computer dual boots Linux Mint and wireless works flawlessly.

The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.

I am sure I have a driver installed because the configuration screen shows my network. I currently have the computer plugged into my network via CAT 5 but I would like to be able to use the wireless (obviously.) I am using Open SuSE version 11.2 and I have run the updater. I could not see my wireless network before running the updater and I can now so I know that the updates have helped but I am again stuck. I have tried to search the wireless forum and I have tried to tinker with the settings in YaST , but nothing seems to be working. Jul 21, 2010I want to switch my laptop from XP to Ubuntu, but right now, i cant risk installing it. i dont want to have it partitioned so i can dual boot, so for now i only run the try-it-out mode.Before i consider installing though, i want to see if i can get everything to work ahead of time, that way im not regreting instalation. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. I have looked this up, and i have tried many things, and so far, none have worked.I was wondering if it was just part of the trial thing or not, but it is a Broadcom Wireless BCM4318 driver

Jul 13, 2011When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.
